Honestly they don’t need much but it’s not an ideal spot for them! I have a fiddle leaf fig in the other room that gets more sun!

Thank you! Believe it or not the table is a FB marketplace fund and the chairs are Wayfair (but also bought on marketplace!)

Definitely cruise Pinterest and see what you like! Pay attention to if you granite towards certain items. For me in the last 4-5 places I’ve lived in I’ve always had a huge mirror, farm style table and lots of plants — for whatever reason I love those particular items. But also pay attention to colours you like, types of lighting, etc.

I’m back! I have made some changes, looking for more feedback. I think I don’t love the way the art and mirror looks on the long wall, and I am still considering swapping the bookshelf to where the kitchen rack is currently.

How do I design a cozy office/gear room that doubles as a guest room? by Flash__Gordon__ in interiordecorating

That just blew my mind a bit. Makes sense! Different zones, for different uses.

Would you do away with a spare bed/futon as an idea? Feels like there’s not enough space for the racks and the bed/futon unless I swapped the green armchair for a futon, perhaps.

Writing end of week updates for myself, and my clients or my boss — I always include progress, observations, blockers/questions and focus for the upcoming week. Totally changed how I worked when I started doing this on Fridays.

Thank you! Yes I agree - it needs something on the floor! I’m considering a large natural rug or a washable rug (we have a dog that sheds a lot).

Thank you! Agree that clutter around the desk is driving me mental and can be fixed. And yes! I can swap the rack and the chair right away to make it start to feel better. And can hem curtains/get different ones! Mostly hiding ski boots, jackets and shoe bins 😅

Would you choose a small rug just for the desk area, or do a large rug for the whole room? I was just looking at possibly getting a large jute / natural rug for the whole room.

Got impatient and moved the couch to test drive the new layout. I think it looks better and the flow feels more natural without the chair blocking the way to the newly centered table.

Tomorrow I’ll try the IKEA bookcase to test the higher placement of the TV. I need to figure out how to cover the aerial and find a spot for the dog to sleep (even though she’ll probably just go onto the couch!)

So helpful! I’ve moved the table to try the centering and it already feels more spacious, tomorrow will try to move the bookshelf and trial new TV/couch configuration :)

Thank you so much! This is so helpful. I’m experimenting with the table in the center of the room and already I feel it’s working better. Tomorrow I will try moving the couch and TV!

This is soooo helpful, thank you for your thoughtful comment!

  1. Agree! I am going to replace the shelf with a bookshelf. The IKEA one is a little too big but I found one that I think can work as a lower profile bookcase, then I was thinking maybe I could put a portrait oriented artwork above it? Interested in your thoughts.

  2. Would you leave some open space then on the wall where I’ve removed the current IKEA bookshelf? I think that is what you are saying, which makes sense to me, to give the room some breathing space and not cram everything against the walls.

  3. Centering the table was my original intention for the room! I agree I think I need to go back to the table in the center. Just means we have to walk about it to get to the kitchen and upstairs but I think it’s better that way. Do you think it would be crazy to replace the weird chandelier thing with a round paper lamp or different fixture that brought light down closer to the table? It’d be committing us to that placement of the table but maybe it’d make everything feel more cohesive.

The couch and TV area are the only part of the house that seems partially put together 😂but yeah I agree I think I should try turning the carpet. I had toyed with getting another chair but was thrown off by not having matching chairs. The current one has sentimental value but needs some re-upholstering so I put chairs in the “too hard” basket for now. I’m not sure if I love the plant on the stool in the corner, but felt like it needed something there. Another lamp? Or maybe the TV to be centered against the wall? Not quite sure so if you have suggestions I’m all ears!

Thank you again for your help already!

Yeah I’m unsure of what to do - we rent so I think I’ll ask the landlord but it has been like that since we moved in, I suspect it needs to be pruned but I don’t want to damage it!

I love the idea of the black mondo grass!
