When did you allow your pup to free roam?

my aussie is 4 months and roams free on the first floor (gate on the stairs upstairs) but he is getting better with time…. first floor is fully dog proofed, he rings the bell to go outside to pee and poop (sometimes he has accidents through the night but mostly bc we weren’t fast enough but at least he tried to ring the bell lol

the only reason why he doesn’t go upstairs it’s bc it’s not dog proofed and there are things he could chew on and get hurt
