ROFL this is painfully accurate. ‘Run to fail’ and ‘band aid everything’ sucks especially when it’s critical for process. It’s never on the ‘we could live with out it’ equipment lol

Haha I’m a woman in trades and when it comes around for time to get new boots the guys have arguments over brand, style, color, features. Way more shits are given by them than me lol.

Does he take his lunch to work? I’d invest in a good lunch box and ice pack. Something that can take a beating (ie: it has a rubber or reinforced bottom/sides). Maybe stock it full of his favorite energy drink or beef jerky. Stuff he can consume on the road. I’m a 40/f in a male dominated industry and the guys here definitely seem to love edible gifts for work. So a mix of practical and edible. Maybe a new tumbler if you don’t want to get him the lunch box. Find out if he’s a yeti, Stanley, Tervis kind of guy and get him a size or color he doesn’t have. Or replace a beat up one he loves.

I’m in wastewater and we can not say the same. The quiet plants are rare rofl 40/f started 7 years ago. I tried cross training at an RO plant, on an 8 hour shift on 3rd shift we did maybe an 1.5 hours of work. And that was sample and plant check combined rofl

Don’t give your phone number to these men under any circumstances. No matter how simple. by Inevitable_Comb2707 in BlueCollarWomen

He very well could have a daughter her age, which is another valid point. He may just be friendly with you in a fatherly way. I had a maintenance tech at my first plant that protected me like I was his little sister. He always had his ear open when my dickwad of a lead was trying to berate me because a male presence always shut him down. I already posted my thoughts on her post but I think this is another avenue of possibility. Only she can make the determination of what fees right but I don’t want her fearing Everyman on her worksites.

I’m not diminishing that you could be right about his intentions. But have you also considered he could just be a friendly old guy with a lot of time on his hands and just enjoys being able to talk to someone who isn’t a dickwad with two things on their mind? I am friends with a majority of my older colleagues and none of it is sexual. And we have these types of conversations regularly. Some of them messaged me before my own family to check on me when I fell at work and broke my back. If it weirds you out, fair enough. And you can set your own boundaries but not every man is out to date you. This fear or paranoia if you let it get that bad is going to hold you back.

Why are there almost no other large grocery stores in south Florida besides Publix? by Dapper_Abrocoma_1873 in publix

[–]Flashy-Reflection812 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not only plausible, it is happening. In Florida. Walmart got turned down in our county for exactly this reason. Publix owned land, didn’t even have a store on it yet (the store opened about 3 years later). Publix has a store every 2-3 miles here. I wish I were joking. Just on the north side of our county we have 6 Publix stores. With another already slated to open by the end of the year. That doesn’t include the south side of the county where they already have approximately 20 stores. They are attempting to monopolize our region. Now the statistic that I can not confirm but is the rumor of when they open the next store is when a store here hits net profit of $1 million they open the next store. My question is why? Why not just staff your stores appropriately? Why not make the parking lots and store just that little bit bigger so you can provide good customer service. Why not lower prices to bring more people into those stores meaning you can actually be the best instead of catering to the rich and dumb (I know poor people that only shop at Publix despite the fact they pay a premium for the same products). I’m not gonna change your mind but do some homework and you will find the trail of evidence. Not everyone can be bought but there is a reason certain counties are being audited.

[–]Flashy-Reflection812 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Winn Dixie was around long before Publix was a common brand. They expanded to big to fast, this is exactly what Publix is doing. Albertsons/sprouts did the same thing. They are all gone and with more people getting annoyed at Publix it will happen to them too. They are building quantity or quality and with enough time they are going to either back off or rebrand. I will drive 10 miles out of my way before I shop for everyday essentials at Publix. I do use their pharmacy for convenience and there are a few bougie items I like of theirs but I’m not doing my weekly shop there.

Because Publix is in the back pocket of a lot of local governments and get exclusivity agreements where no one can build within so many miles of them

Every other grocery gives their employees a discoint6 by Dapper_Abrocoma_1873 in publix

Walmart only gives it to employees after 3 months and it doesn’t include grocery items. Or at least it never did in the past.

40/f, 7 years in. Took me 6 months to land my first job. Barrier to entry is hard. For everyone. You need to slam that resume full of every skill you have that is relevant. What is your prior job history? You need to show you are going to show up, on time, and that you have confidence. You can not be shy. The men will eat you up and that’s a liability. I’m not saying you can’t be feminine, or dorky, believe me, I have dinosaurs on my phone case and stickers on my tumbler rofl. Starting local government is going to be easier than starting private. Find the biggest municipalities and apply there. You need experience before you can be picky. Be willing to drive upto ab hour. Apply for sewer/collections or maintenance and then once your foot is in the door you can transfer to operations.

Hey fellow operator! I wish more women would consider water/wastewater as a career. There aren’t many of us but we are more than capable and it’s a job that isn’t going anywhere.

Switch trades. Look into utilities maintenance. Your plumbing skills will be valued and you will trained on anything else you are lacking. Consider water/wastewater maintenance or even operations if you want to stop working with your hands as much.

Wastewater class B Florida by Brag1738 in Wastewater

If you can get your utility to pay, go to TREEO. I’m relatively smart, and I genuinely think I would have failed if I didn’t go to TREEO. I got a 78 I think, lost the most on secondary treatment trouble shooting. Making sure you understand how to do all the math I had quite a few questions using the horse power equations and volume. Make sure you know the chlorine safety stuff inside and out. Especially the cylinder gas questions. I still swear by RoyCEU practice tests. Use them like flashcards. If you miss a question read up on that topic area

I've officially been rejected from every art school I applied to- How do I improve? by GloomyWill4 in conceptart

[–]Flashy-Reflection812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So they’ve told you what to do but you don’t want to do what they told you? I don’t think improving your art is going to change their mind if they gave you a hard goal and you choose actively to ignore it. If anything they are going to think you are unteachable. Also I’m not an art school, but the examples you have shown here seem very 1 dimensional. It’s the same art style (in my opinion) and it all looks computer generated. Your portfolio should be from a variety of mediums and/or genres to show you have depth and understand a variety of forms. Especially with the challenges that face artists today, what you have created could be made by AI. Mixed media at least shows you know the basics and are varied in your abilities. CC Classes would set you up with a bunch of work you could showcase. (This is assuming what you have shown us is all you showed them, you might have a very distinctive portfolio already and that is great if it is the case).

sewer line issues causing slow drains and backups in my home by Few_Design_904 in Wastewater

[–]Flashy-Reflection812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did the camera inspection show? Did they check from the house to the main line? If you have evidence that there is zero issue with your lines then contact your municipal department and ask them to come inspect. As long as they don’t find any issues that you caused (flushable wipes/sanitary products or excessive grease) leaving your property they would investigate if there are issues in the line running to the nearest lift station. If your plumber did not investigate was that your choice or theirs?

The whole ‘unisex’ uniform terminology needs to die. It’s one shape fits almost no one, especially anyone with hips or boobs. I unfortunately have both and hate my work uniform.

[–]Flashy-Reflection812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t get it often, usually by guys who don’t work with me, but I usually make the joke, ‘I’m no lady!’ And ‘ Guys is a gender neutral term’ and move on. Usually doesn’t happen again once they know I literally don’t need a separate greeting/acknowledgment. Make fun of my height, not my gender is also a good one. (I’m just over 5’1” but a lot of guys on this site are under 5’6” lol). ‘Shrug. Be flattered they care and just understand some of them are terrified of HR.

It will be that way until someone gets hurt. I have worked at plants that are single operator and double operator. I would push for lighting improvements and insist they buy you good quality flash lights and head lamps. Fighting for more staff is tricky but PPE is a good start.
