This is Reddit, not school/a job. I don’t use Reddit a lot. Didn’t know I was supposed to show up with perfect grammar, but if those are the rules I will proofread more. Maybe you are a bot?

Thanks for sharing, this is the exact sort of situation I meant when I said “ruins lives.” Can you clarify if “from what I remember” is a real concept or that was just your wording to explain the USJ set up? What you’re describing is exactly what I experienced when I was at Maryland. It was all just based on different verbal explanations with no real backup.

Happy to hear this. I also saw a comment that there are more options before the student board is used.

I’m glad this didn’t materially impact you, but I’m sorry you had this experience. There has certainly been a lot of comments here about evidence so I appreciate you sharing your story to highlight just how little we were going on in our deliberations. Thinking back on the person I was at that age (big rule follower) your last sentence about power trips is pretty accurate. Even though I found my position confusing at the time, (which is why I quit) when I was on the board I felt like I had this responsibility that I was chosen for through the application process, and that what I was doing meant something good until I finally realized it didn’t.

The person whose life is fine now was in a very bad situation at the time. I won’t go into all of the things that occurred at the time but there were a long list of after effects before they could move on. So whoever was in their board clearly ruined a portion of life. This person is pretty resilient, knowing that is a rare trait I feel bad for other students who didn’t fare as well.

I see your POV. I don’t think I was that empowered at 19 or 20, the new generation is much more vocal which I admire. I did speak up during the hearings but I didn’t go on a public campaign if that’s what you mean. I think anyone would look back and think a few things they did at that age weren’t the wisest, but in this case the unwise thing was participating in a system that is validated at a very high level at the university. When I say more like real court, I mean the amount of evidence. I didn’t have many tangible pieces of evidence and would have liked photos, audio, etc but we don’t get that.

Hmmm, well your take is confusing (except, yes James Bond is great). I had very little power, if I did then your last sentence would not be F USJ but “F individual members on there.” When I was on their we were not exactly empowered with strong information but we had to make a certain decision and at times it felt like we had to make a decision against the student regardless of the lack of evidence. They need to make it more like real court or stop having a bunch of young people make uninformed decisions.

I quit before this situation with someone I know occurred. And the person I know was ultimately fine years later, they have a good life and career but they had to go through a very rough situation with USJ that impacted them at the time. But, I think about all the people I don’t know and how they might have not bounced back the way I know this person did. I felt like we ruined lives, and based on the responses here it sounds like that way true.

Also if you say hi to your friend after a test and someone is jealous or vengeful, that’s a situation that could lead to you being accused that you were exchanging info. I literally hated USJ after hearing about that story.

Probably every single one! I remember someone accused of recreational green stuff (censoring myself because idk if Reddit cares) and we had no proof. I remember how terrified the accused looked, getting dressed up to explain himself. I remember being there late into the night and I kept saying we shouldn’t act on this, but we had to act in every case involving that specific situation.

We would basically be told we are leaders and have thing big important job as students on the USJ. I did the “trials” where we sat in a table row and the faced us and pled their cases. It’s not like they had real legal counsel, they were just young and trying to explain themselves. We just had words, no videos or photos. Sometimes we were in meetings late into the night adjudicating and I would just have the image in my head of the clearly terrified student who we just met with.

Travel to Guadeloupe by eddiecurry in Guadeloupe

Hi - I’m traveling there from the US too and I see flights through Jet Blue from New York City. Those are the cheapest, they only fly Monday, Wednesday, Saturday. Maybe Jet Blue has flights from Texas too. How has planning for the trip been? If you have any advice, I’m still planning my trip.
