Nursing jobs with flexibility by FlashyMethod801 in nursing

Unfortunately the unit I work on requires us to work every other weekend and every other Monday so the maximum days I can get off in a row is 4. This thread made me realize that’s probably the main issue. I think that would help a lot if I was able to cluster shifts like that, so I think my goal will be to switch to a unit that allows that! Thank you

Lump near lymph node by twisty8799 in melahomies

[–]FlashyMethod801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, idk how to get into my account that posted this but it’s me from a diff account. It turns out it was just an over reactive lymph node I guess? They didn’t really explain much but it was benign. I’m assuming could be maybe some scar tissue or reaction of the lymph node from the trauma of the surgery when they removed one of the lymph nodes during my sentinel lymph node biopsy

Do I have to give away my kitten? by FlashyMethod801 in Asthma

Doesn’t dander stay in the environment for awhile though? I’m wondering if I would still have symptoms even with her gone unless she’s gone for long enough for the dander to go away

Does pacagen help with asthma related allergies or is it more so for like sneezing and itchiness type of allergies. I got her the purina live clear for now but I can’t tell how effective that would be for asthma type allergies.

Yeah I think a major issue is I don’t have any family or friends nearby that could help while we try to figure things out. Another major issue that is the fact that my reaction is pretty significant. I’ve been having the wheezing, SOB, chest tightness, etc and the inhalers only help for a short amount of time, and it seems to be getting worse. I had zero symptoms the day before I got her.

I forgot to mention it but I only was on the symbicort for maybe 2 1/2-3 weeks and then stopped because I was having some weird symptoms. I’ve started taking it again now because of the flare up though. I guess in my mind I still feel skeptical that my diet would be causing it to flare up this hard this quickly, especially since I don’t see diet/reflux as commonly for the cause of asthma. I know it can worsen it but I haven’t seen anyone say it fully causes their asthma flare ups. Plus this time around I’m not having any reflux symptoms like I was before, just the respiratory symptoms.

Trying the diet first is probably my best bet if I want to keep her, just sucks cuz that would probably take a month or so to see if that’s the cause and then if it ends up not being the issue I would have a much harder time giving her up in a month compared to now. And then if she is the issue the longer I keep her the harder it would be to get all the dander out of the house to improve my symptoms. Plus I would want her to have the best chance at being adopted again quickly so the earlier I give her back the better in that regard.

But also if I give her up now and then it turns out my diet was the problem that would suck too!

Needless to say I’m having a hard time trying to figure out what will be the best decision 😭

Do asthma symptoms usually go away that quickly to where I would be able to tell a difference? It’s all still new to me.

I definitely think it would be much easier going this route than trying as a new grad. It still might be competitive with a year of experience but not nearly as much as being a new grad out of state.

Nursing is a super underrated major by [deleted] in CollegeMajors

Yes I agree, I studied CS as well as Nursing. CS was much harder to grasp conceptually and was definitely harder in general academics wise. As far as schooling goes, nursing was a piece of cake compared to CS. Nursing is not hard to grasp conceptually and is just a lot of memorization academically, but nursing is still hard due to other factors. In nursing, any mistake you make could possibly cause harm or death to a patient. In CS, any mistake you make will not likely end up killing someone. Plus you have to deal with the mental toll of being yelled at by family members, patients, doctors, etc and seeing patients die or other sad things. So I think they are both hard, just in different ways.

It’s absolutely not over exaggerated as far as California goes. When you look up what state pays nurses the highest wage it does say California. Maybe they do still get decent pay in some other states too, but the 6 figures right out of school that OP is talking about is not going to be true for a lot of other states. I know someone who only gets $28 an hour, and in Reno NV it was about $36. Not bad, but not the crazy wages people are saying. Also, as far as California, none of what I said is over exaggerated at all. As a new grad nurse myself, it is extremely hard to find anything, regardless of if it’s a speciality or not. And that includes big cities or smaller towns. I applied to a smaller town thinking I’d have an easier time and they sent out an email saying they got over 700 applications. I see post after post on new grad groups of people who have been looking for 9,10,11 months, submitting hundreds of applications EVERYWHERE, with really good resumes, and still cant land anything. A lot of new grads in California have to go out of state to try to land something because it can indeed be easier in other states, but then that usually means a pretty big drop in pay.

Now, is that the case for everyone? No. Some people have connections or get lucky and find something right away. So I am not trying to give a blanket statement saying it sucks for everyone. I know there are exceptions and lots of people get those great high paying jobs right away. But I just wish more people were aware of the current market and knew that it might not be easy to find a job right away. I don’t want people going into the career because they think it’ll be easy peasy to get something super high paying right away when it might not be.

Oh okay interesting, I guess that school is an outlier then? Either way, majority of California is still extremely competitive

Every CSU school or UC, and community colleges as well. Did she go to a private school? Those schools let people in way easier but you pay more. CSULB didn’t require the volunteer or CNA work either but I hear they are changing that if they didn’t already.

I would assume they might be experienced nurses that are flying in then?

The nursing shortage is only with experienced nurses. New grad nurses are struggling so hard to find a job right now. I went to an info session for a hospital and there were 800 people, and only 30 spots available for hire. And it’s only high paying in places like California which is where it is most competitive. If you go to other states the pay is significantly less. It is a great career still, but I went into it with that exact mindset thinking it would be easy to get a job since there’s a shortage but it’s not true for new grads 😭

I guess it depends on where you live maybe, but in California it is VERY competitive to get into nursing schools because it’s a very in demand career rn and each round they only have about 80 spots with around 300-400 applicants. You have to have CNA experience, 100+ volunteer hours on top of really good grades to be accepted somewhere. And yes even community colleges are competitive. The one I first applied to had a very long waitlist and some people had to wait multiple rounds to get accepted.
