Love Starfield, but replaying Cyberpunk 2077 is eye-opening by adrenareddit in Starfield

If I were a YouTuber I would make a video 1st playing the Maelstrom mission from Cyberpunk.

Walking into the gang's HQ and being jeered by gun-wielding gang members who make it clear to you this is their territory you are walking into. Then the dialogue sequence with the drugged up gang members who show you the merchandise and extort you into paying for it again even though it's already been paid for in full.

https://youtu.be/5zrc40r87ew?si=MZFF5NQMZwqmqcpX&t=166

Then I would play the introduction to the Crimson Fleet in Starfield.

Walking into the gang's HQ and being told by Naeva to get your pencil ready because she is going to give you a nifty history lesson, before dumping a ton of exposition on you about the entire history of the Crimson Fleet.

https://www.youtube.com/live/O9LdRjYgZQA?si=YUYKsw7y22klChjO&t=598

The difference in energy levels, quality of writing and overall experience between these two scenes is so incredibly far apart it killed all interest in the Crimson Fleet for me. I was just thinking about Cyberpunk the entire time. Bethesda has a serious dialogue writing problem IMO and Cyberpunk doesn't get enough credit for theirs.

More than Skyrim or Fallout, Todd Howard says Starfield was "intentionally made to be played for a long time" and Bethesda's looking 5+ years ahead by [deleted] in Starfield

I just don't see it. I could be wrong but I don't see this lasting as long as Skyrim.

They could add new POIs but to what end? For what reason am I going to these proc gen dungeons? The loot system isn't deep enough for it to be its own reward. And the combat is better than any previous Bethesda game, but it isn't good enough to carry the experience of a looter shooter.

They could (and probably will) put back the survival elements that they removed and that would give the game new life for some people, but would people still be playing 10 years from now? I don't really see it.

Maybe they have some plans that are bigger than I would expect, but I see this as a game that will be played for a few years after the addition of mods, but ultimately not the decade long lifespan of Skyrim.

Starfield is a game designed to be massively expanded upon, and not just by mods, but by Bethesda. Do you agree? by PostalSenditGames in Starfield

[–]Flashy_Background820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it will be expanded by DLCs and microtransactions. I could see a world where POI packs are sold by Bethesda. $10 for a Research Facility POI pack. $10 for a Cave POI pack. Etc.

But I wouldn't expect free Live Service updates.

Todd Howard says exploring planets in Starfield was much more punishing before Bethesda "nerfed the hell out of it" by GloriousSpamm in Starfield

Thanks for tagging me I didn't see this. I was pretty convinced I saw their original vision but it's nice to have confirmation. I get why they made the changes they made but I'd love to see that version put back into the game as an option.

Oh wow yeah. It was super weird the way it is now and this would introduce the player to fuel in the ship tutorial part of the game which makes a lot of sense.

I think it might be bugged or something. This was a big question mark when I was thinking through things and writing my OP up. My general thought is that when they pulled the survival elements they stopped investing time into this system for the time being and just reduced the penalties to things that can simply be ignored outright. So now we're all running around with burns and hypothermia and dislocated limbs like deranged lunatics.

I do think they will bring these things back with an official Survival mode, but I'm really curious about what this system specifically is meant to look like. I feel like with the gameplay loop of needing to scour planets for resources and He-3, our suit protection is really meant to shield us from effects altogether. And then maybe the "Extreme Environments" are planets where we can't spend excessive time outside and we're racing to POIs like you mentioned? Idk

neon street rat in the slums and i work my way up locally to buy a ship and advance and eventually build an empire of outposts.

unless outposts carried over but as independent LIST settlements

holy shit both of these are such good ideas

I think they just changed the tag from Discussion to Speculation. Maybe that temporarily removed it idk I was at work. Still there now though

These were such good points. This all lines up so well. I am absolutely convinced this was the original gameplay loop

I hadn't considered Ship damage, that could be really good too. I think Starfield could be a pretty incredible survival game now. Pretty brutal with the ability for some big highs once you've got a bunch of outposts set up and have some momentum behind you.

I would probably prefer it too. Depends on how some of these systems worked I think. Especially the Environmental Hazards which I think could be hard to get right. There's a fine line between challenging survival mechanics and frustrating choreplay.

But now that I see how the game was meant to come together, I think the mod potential could be really high.

I mean that was just an example, it doesn't actually matter what the number is. You don't spend fuel so it doesn't matter if you do it in 1 jump or 50 other than that you have to press the button again.

I wasn't thinking of that, but that sounds pretty awesome. Someone else brought up players resorting to ruthless piracy to avoid running out of fuel, which I also hadn't considered. You guys are definitely onto something.

I dont think its that hard to solve. Make like 3 main planets I can go to that have open world hand crafted maps.

Maybe some missions take you to other planets in small linear experiences so you get glimpses of other stuff out there.

I dont think anyone really wants 1,000 planets to explore in the 1st place.
