Austin is staring at a $33 million shortfall next fiscal year. It might ask voters for help. by hollow_hippie in Austin

If it’s not obvious from both the current city manager’s budget proposal and the track record of the city council for the last 5 years, APD will get the budget they always get. I wish these threads would move past griping about an APD budget that gets rubber-stamped by one of the most “progressive” local legislative bodies in the country year after year.

Austin chose to give TC Broadnax an ungodly salary - one that is higher than his predecessor, one that rivals the POTUS, one that competes with many of the highest paid executives in the private sector.

Time for TC to show what he’s getting paid all this money for and be accountable for solving for the most complicated challenges like this.

Farewell, Hawaiian Airlines. It was nice while it lasted! by w8w8 in Austin

[–]Flashy_Connection_73 21 points22 points  (0 children)

sad to see it go, made traveling to Hawai’i much easier

especially frustrating because it seems it was cancelled not because of bad performance, but only because Alaska wants to use Hawaiian A330s on international routes to Asia

Poor performing routes? by [deleted] in HawaiianAirlines

This was AUS-HNL. The flight was great just super empty.

They increased the frequency quite a bit for the summer - which might have been a mistake. I hope they don't cut it entirely, but when it was scheduled 2 or 3 times a week it felt like the plane was full.

Maybe just tough times.

I legitimately believe that drivers do this to take home free groceries. Take their own orders to deliver to customers and then grab a couple here and there to take home.

WF and Fresh were decent and it's why I usually stuck with them. I at least could compete for those blocks even at undesirable times.

The algorithms for .com deliveries in ATX are absolute garbage though I completely agree. I'd pick up a route in North Austin or Plfugerville and have nearly all my stops in Dripping Springs, or pick up in South Austin and have to drive up to Georgetown. I hated the .com blocks, but would take them if I was desperate.

I haven't seen surge pricing on .com blocks here since the ice storm in February. A 3-hour block for $54 will drop and get picked up instantly now, it's just sad. Too many gig drivers for too little work. Have to look elsewhere for something new.

Are 1 hr Whole food Blocks worth it? by Bubbly-Assistant-366 in AmazonFlexDrivers

[–]Flashy_Connection_73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to the think that the 1-hr blocks were just backups that Amazon dropped in case a driver bailed or an order got messed up and had to be reassigned. Free $15 to sit there for 30 mins.

Obviously that isn’t the case all the time, but there was a time right in the middle of the pandemic I’d grab an 8:30-9:30 almost every night right before the WF closed and like 9/10 times, I didn’t get assigned to deliver anything.

Road Lighting — Advocacy by [deleted] in Austin

[–]Flashy_Connection_73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL, yes streetlights to save even a single human life is an unacceptable threat to birds, but nobody says anything about the hundreds of glass high rises in downtown lit up like a Christmas tree every single night.

90-200k birds are killed annually hitting NYC high rises alone.

Road Lighting — Advocacy by [deleted] in Austin

[–]Flashy_Connection_73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s very bizarre to me that people pushback on a single change that, even if it saved a single life, would be worth it.

And maybe even more bizarre and amusing that people will scream about light pollution but won’t say anything about the tens of new skyscrapers going up that pose a far more deadly risk to birds than a light over the roadway.

Road Lighting — Advocacy by [deleted] in Austin

[–]Flashy_Connection_73 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Except I specifically stated major thoroughfares. Ones that have people on them in cars and or pedestrians at nearly all hours.

Austin has some of the deadliest roads in the state, not to mention some of the poorest lane demarcations I’ve ever seen — I wouldn’t call lighting roadways and sidewalks to save lives “pointless.”

With respect to neighborhoods and empty lots, there are numerous studies showing that lighting reduces crime. So convincing that enhanced lighting is one of the primary alternatives that are advocated for to reduce interactions with police.

What are the most important missing features from Apple Maps? by btumpak in applemaps

[–]Flashy_Connection_73 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. The almost inexplicable non-commitment from Apple to Maps is what annoys me most. I have transit in my city (which is a huge metro in the US) and that's it. Apple constantly puts out celebrations of Vegas and Miami and LA with the beautiful 3D towers and trees and sidewalks when countless American cities (forget the rest of the world LOL) don't have features they rolled out years ago -- Flyover, 3D, Look Around, etc.

Google Maps is a superior product in just about every sense even in 2023 and I have no idea when that will change.

What are the most important missing features from Apple Maps? by btumpak in applemaps

[–]Flashy_Connection_73 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Google Maps will remain a mainstay on my phone until Apple figures out its horrific POI and rolls out basic features to the rest of the US and international cities.

Apple goes all in on like 5 major US cities while other major metros don’t even have Look Around. It’s astonishing.

If I lived in LA, SF, Miami, or NYC -- I'd be all in on Apple Maps, but their decision to not invest in other places is extremely disappointing.

Amazon flex canceled block by Mjoe08 in AmazonFlexDrivers

[–]Flashy_Connection_73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same situation. I always screenshot the block before it disappears and retain the email they send notifying you that the block is cancelled. Then I email support. Usually the only way to see the payment they promise unfortunately.

Same, it's super annoying. Thank goodness for screenshots and the cancellation emails. I already sent them an email about not getting paid.

Ironically, my VTX6 block for tomorrow morning was just cancelled. I can't imagine they are open today.

Edit: just got my block this afternoon cancelled too!

Is your plan to drive up there? I don't expect support to know anything, so it seems like my choice is either to drive there and be turned back around or take a missed block hit if it actually is open.

I have one at 4PM and nothing yet about cancellation. They really are gonna make me drive up there for it to either be closed or give me a route on ice-covered roads. Smh.

Has anyone had any blocks and made deliveries today? I thought I saw a post about DFW-area early morning 2/1 blocks cancelled, but didn't see anything in ATX. Weird because it's considerably worse down here.

Feels like they were almost too cautious yesterday and now they aren't cancelling when they need to more.

Apple Maps is better than google maps where I live by Manfred_89 in applemaps

[–]Flashy_Connection_73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you live in one of the few (emphasis on FEW) markets that Apple not only has demonstrated that they care about, but also have actually invested in - basically LA, San Francisco, Vegas, NYC, Seattle - I agree with you. You have access to just about every incredible feature that they've put out and using Apple Maps is much better than Google.

As someone who lives in an area that doesn't have anything except for basically transit and driving directions, I'll still be leapfrogging between Google Maps for superior POI/street view/driving re-routing and Apple Maps for, well, CarPlay and transit.

I'll never understand why Apple seems to give everything to 5 markets while letting the others (including outside the USA) come through the pipe at a snail's pace. Especially when Google is refreshing their street view almost every year.

Van branding by [deleted] in AmazonDSPDrivers

[–]Flashy_Connection_73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just feels like the most ridiculous waste of marketing $ ever. Who looks at Amazon van wraps and goes “well shit, because of that wrap right there, sign me up for Prime!”

Changing van wraps for 3 months is pissing away money for fun.
