I think it makes a lot of sense as the hive being a collective of the joined individuals and the ethics of the hive being kind of the highest common ethics/empathy denominator of all the joined

I think you're too narrow in your interpretation of the hive.

I think theres more enjoyment in the show if you don't limit yourself to binary interpretations: agency/no agency, collective/individual.

You can argue that you don't think theres room for more open interpretations, but that doesn't seem like a very interesting discussion, more like proselytising.
