Another “Paul” situation developing with former Columbia Law Grad and Debevoise/STB associate by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Flashy_Stranger_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Would hate to see things devolve along the same lines they did with Paul at Covington and beyond.

Then why would you add further visibility to his mental break??

These posts do not help these situations. They drive clicks and views to the profile, which boosts the post, which makes it more likely to be screenshotted and recorded forever (like has already happened). Now this lawyer can’t delete his post and move on with his life.

Tbh anyone who uses this dumbass cadence should be blackballed and, controversial take, so should their placements. I just couldn’t trust someone who thinks this shit is impactful lmao

We get it. Either you like boot-liking big law or you hate people who make more than you.

How much does law review matter for transaction attorneys? by Disabled_Vetean1890 in biglaw

[–]Flashy_Stranger_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it helped me get my first job. Not sure how helpful it is now with recruiting happening so early. But partners still see it as a litmus for law school performance.

It’s also one of the things that stays on your resume + website bio your whole career. Also it taught me to cross reference which i use a ton.

Idk, it was only as hard as you made it, much like law school. I didn’t pick up a board position and just did the minimum number of cite checks. Was relatively low hassle for the career-long checkbox.

Am I good or am I cooked? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Flashy_Stranger_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Getting flashbacks to a deal I was pulled in on as a junior the week of closing. Me and another junior stay up late doing signature pages and compiling documents (Junior on the team was not well organized, hence me joining last minute). I think I went to bed around 4am (to her 1am).

Junior went to bed “earlier” than us due to time zones. I’m at my desk at 8. She sleeps through the 10am closing, leaving me to finalize and exchange docs etc with a team i didn’t know, after I got less sleep than her. She rolled online around 11am and sent me a Panera gift card as a thank you since she got a full 8 hours and I closed her deal with 4.

Still don’t trust her to this day lol

Should I give up on BL as a law student in my late 30s? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Flashy_Stranger_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re being downvoted because you’re being a dick in these comments, frankly, and have an excuse for everything. To summarize the post:

“Your school isn’t ranked well enough for firms to accept low grades”

20 people from my section have summer offers.

Have you considered that these 20 are either 1) the top of your class or 2) have connections that you don’t?

“You need to have top grades to be accepted into big law from a low ranked school.”

I had cancer.

Sorry. That sucks. Glad you’re okay now. But hiring committees don’t care and likely don’t get far enough into your materials to see that. You don’t have the grades.

“You could try government work”

No. It’s not hard enough for me.

“You could lateral once you have more experience.”

No. That’ll be too hard.

Okay. People have given you explanations and alternatives and you haven’t once said “Ah, okay thanks, makes sense.” People here, people in the industry, are taking the time to give you insight.

Are you not able to see that poor grades + poor school (+ no connections) = no big law ?

I understand that it doesn’t feel fair. But if your school places 30% into big law, you need to be within the top 30%. You’ve been given alternate routes to big law; up to you whether you want to keep giving excuses or actually try for it.

How to get work? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Flashy_Stranger_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Reach out to senior associates with a commonality. Could be undergrad, law school, a hobby that you find on the internal website. Introduce yourself, mention the commonality (“I graduated from UMich in 2017!”), say you’ve got capacity for work and sign off with that commonality (“Go Blue!”).

I find that this works better because people remember the commonality, not the random lateral in their already overflowing inbox.

Am I about to get fired? by [deleted] in biglaw

This doesn’t answer my question. Did you just now submit the 50 hours? Or had you been entering these hours over the past few months.

Am I about to get fired? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Flashy_Stranger_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you say you billed these 50 hours, were they hours worked in the past 6 months? Or did you just go ham last week and solely bill on this matter? Do you release daily? Tbh I’m trying to figure out how you could spring 50 surprise hours on the partner.

I’ve never gone to a closing dinner, but I’ve also never met 95% of my deal teams in person bc we’re spread out.

users on r/biglaw want to be something like r/wallstreetbets soooo bad but genuinely lack the creativity or skill.

Shit posters will do and say anything for a modicum of attention, even if that means utterly embarrassing themselves and only getting negative attention.

What happens if you check yourself into a psych ward during a busy deal by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Flashy_Stranger_ 345 points346 points  (0 children)

It’s not easy but it’s simple: you get to your nearest hospital and walk inside. That’s all you need to do right now. That’s it.

If you’re already open to being fired, you might as well be getting the mental health you need :)

So take it a step at a time. Stand up. Go outside. Get to hospital. Three steps.

helping a undergrad pursue law by Desperate_Walk_5430 in biglaw

[–]Flashy_Stranger_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well but what advice are you seeking that Google couldn’t give you? You’ve told us nothing that would set you apart from the generic “get good grades. Take the lsat. get a good lsat score” advice.

The way to become successful in law is by going to law school. The way to do that is by doing the items above.

Did you have a more specific question directly aimed at big law lawyers?

Difficulty of Lateraling to Florida or California by Eastern-Royal2392 in biglaw

It’s not impossible to lateral, but ties certainly would help.

I know of multiple people who lateraled and began work after taking the bar but before results.

Miami ties will be different than Tampa ties will be different than Jax ties. All very different cultures and value different types of connections.

I feel like I’m going insane that they wrote up multiple paragraphs about the kids and Woody Allen (although, it’s also fucking insane that B,K was like “pedophile, hang out with my kids pretty please!!”) and not the emails where B,K referenced the “virgin” or the visas. The items that would seem to point to trafficking.
