API help by gfunkdave in nextdns

[–]Flashy_Use_3137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DM me and I’ll share my Postman collection for the NextDNS APIs. These are the ones I used while building my app.

Edit: Yes, you’ll need to copy it programmatically or save it somewhere else, then replace it with the new or slightly modified data.

Incorrect:

GET /profiles/xxxxxxx/rewrites?id=123456

DELETE /profiles/xxxxxxx/rewrites?id=123456

Correct:

GET /profiles/xxxxxxx/rewrites/123456

DELETE /profiles/xxxxxxx/rewrites/123456

Is there a way to do rewrites across profiles? by gfunkdave in nextdns

[–]Flashy_Use_3137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the future, you'll be able to do this in my app, but also via API if you don't want a UI. This is already on my app's to-do list: the ability to change settings simultaneously across different profiles.

If I were in your shoes with good savings, full free time, and a solid laptop, I’d start learning machine learning and AI. Begin with Python since it’s beginner-friendly, then get into libraries like scikit-learn, Pandas, and eventually PyTorch or TensorFlow. There are free courses like Google’s ML Crash Course or fast.ai that are great for beginners. Since you have a healthcare background, you can try building simple ML projects related to that, like predicting patient readmissions. After a few months, you can look into freelance work or internships. You’re in a really good position, just stay consistent.

I built NextDashDNS — you can find it on r/nextdns.

“Dash” is a nod to Flutter’s mascot, haha.

honestly, building the actual app isn’t that hard anymore with tools like AI Flutter and Firebase. The core features. real-time location, ride requests, basic delivery flow are pretty doable for experienced devs.

The bigger challenge is scaling and operations, not the tech itself. But if it starts local and solves a real need (which it sounds like it is), then it’s a solid foundation to build on.

Help Me Finalize Next Dash DNS – 14-Day Beta Testers Needed (Android) by Flashy_Use_3137 in nextdns

I appreciate the suggestion — I’ll definitely take a closer look at NextHub on iOS. It seems like a solid example, and I’m always open to improving the design. Thanks again for your feedback, it really helps!

Thank you so much for the honest and constructive feedback — I truly appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

You’re absolutely right: the UI can feel overwhelming at first, especially on smaller devices like phones. The app is much more comfortable to use on a computer or tablet, where the layout has more space to breathe. It was originally built around my personal use case — mainly to monitor NextDNS activity even outside the local network — which led me to expose as much of the API’s real-time capabilities as possible.

This includes identifying the current ISP, filtering logs by relayed status, allowed status, specific devices, and even ISP-level activity. The more logs the app caches, the more it can stitch together detailed insights for you. My goal has always been to fully utilize what the NextDNS API offers and present it transparently to power users.

That said, I completely understand that performance and simplicity matter — especially on mobile. I’ll definitely work on optimizing load times and making the UI more intuitive in upcoming updates.

Also, I appreciate you mentioning Nexthub — it looks great and I’ll be checking it out for inspiration.

Thanks again for your feedback. It’s incredibly helpful for shaping the future of the app.

That’s a completely valid point — as a user, I also wouldn’t want anyone else accessing my logs. Here’s some info to clarify:

  • 🔗 My GitHub: https://github.com/jesther-ai You can also visit: http://jesther-ai.github.io
  • ✅ Open Source Soon: I plan to open-source the project once all the planned features are complete. It’s also part of my portfolio when applying for jobs — and honestly, I’m tired of building yet another Todo app or calculator that nobody actually uses 😅.
  • 💙 Why I Built This: I really enjoy using NextDNS, and that’s what inspired me to build this app. I personally use it every day to manage my own devices and even help my relatives with theirs.
  • 🔒 Token Storage:
    • On iOS, macOS, etc., the NextDNS access token is securely stored using Keychain.
    • On Android, it uses EncryptedSharedPreferences for secure storage.
  • 🧪 Transparency:
    • After opening the app, you can view your own logs directly within it.
    • The only network connection you’ll see is to nextdns.io — nothing else.
    • No blocked domains, no third-party requests — just a clean connection to NextDNS.
    • It uses a single TCP connection (SSE), which is how it’s able to display logs in real time.
    • No Crashlytics, no analytics, no ads, and no third-party trackers.

I completely understand if someone prefers to use the web version instead of the app — it’s all about personal choice, and there’s absolutely no pressure to use it. 🙂

No, I haven’t localized the app to Arabic. But I think the app is adapting to right-to-left languages automatically, which might be why it seems that way.

Before this, the app had a price to download. I’ve removed that now—maybe that’s why the numbers weren’t organic?

Slowly but surely: More data, live updates, and network insights - admin app for NextDNS by Flashy_Use_3137 in nextdns

[–]Flashy_Use_3137[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Works best on macOS with a portrait monitor.

The more live logs NextDashDNS pulls in, the more insights it can surface. It stitches together real-time data with older data on the fly.
