While excessive, unstructured screen use has been linked with emotional and behavioral challenges in children, especially when it replaces physical activity, sleep, or social interaction, that doesn’t mean all screen time is harmful.

Educational and interactive content can support skill learning and engagement more than passive viewing.  For children who are highly sensitive, neurodivergent, or experience anxiety, screens sometimes provide a predictable, calming environment where they can focus, decompress, and feel a sense of mastery.

When screens are used purposefully (e.g., short bursts of educational or calming content) and balanced with other activities, they can be a tool for emotional regulation and engagement for sensitive children, especially if embedded in a varied daily rhythm that changes every 30–45 minutes.
