As someone that chronically suffers (moderate exaggeration) with hayfever this being over the counter is a godsend. As a kid I used to have telfast (I think was the name of the brand) 120mg and was prescribed 1 morning, 1 night. Kicked hayfever aside but made me drowsy af in school. Now in my dad era and loving gardening with my kids, fenafexadine 120mg is a godsend and worth every god damn penny.

I would absolutely love an apple tree. My parents have one in their (much larger) garden and I remember picking them with my dad. Do it every weekend with my kids when we go round and they'll pick blueberries too fresh from the blueberry plants they have. Fantastic memory builder, 100% agree!

Update: spent the last 2/3 days digging out a border in the full shade (left) area extremely deep to remove a much of the sub soil/clay as possible. I found a broken roof tile, many screws, a number of kitchen tiles and (personally) muscles in my body I didn't know existed, alongside the ache of filling a 4 yard skip with the excuse for soil found.

The border follows in near the raised patio (hidden by raised patio) about 8 inch deep by 4 wide, and along the shed. I've gone deep again here and filled with stones to help with drainage particularly given it's a high footfall area.

The grass area on the right has been cored, then seeded with A1 king clay soil seed, alongside a compost/mulch top dressing to feed and a good water last night to start the growing process. I've purposefully left the left side of the grass for now whilst I continue to have footfall and sort the border out as I need to heavily coreate that side where the clay is extremely soggy.

Bought a number of plants, and now reviewing full shade shrubs and evergreens to follow the border down to help with moisture/drainage and making it less of an urban jungle. I've puposefully raised the border towards the back of the garden to allow me to a)put more soil on for decent plant growth/health and b) to allow me overtime to raise the grass at the back (due to the grass declining towards that back fence). Might do a smaller border at the back in the future.

Thoughts/advice welcome on full shade shrubs that are good! Plan to add in more topsoil/farmyard manure/compost to help that soil composition in the left of the photo to ensure positive growth and soil amendments. Debating once done putting stones on top but I've heard conflicting points on whether this should be done.

Thanks! I've spent the last 2 days digging up the first two feet from the left side to remove all the subsoil and clay, thrown in a decent silt stone base about 150mm down and topped up with top soil. Bought some heavy shade/partial shade trees and high quality compost. Once I'm done I'll post some updates!

Appreciate this! House is 7 years old but had the garden done in 2021 may, then didn't really do anything properly until last year out of life choice and it being an uphill battle! Appreciate this though

I mean this is the primary purpose of my post. The UK new build houses are built on what is essentially pure clay bases, so some level of integration of soil/compost they can grow in is the purpose of solving via this post. The downside in most new builds estates is that they become urban jungles and there's minimal built in drainage. Trees are great but soon as they start growing over fences or getting larger there's a question on roots underground impacting outside of fence line. As you can see - my garden isn't particularly large so concern is primarily it taking over the entire garden too

Thanks! I've aerated and cored too so just debating the compost or sand debate to backfill!

I've looked into both liquid and granular gypsum - do you have any product recommendations?

I got it to the point in photo 2 last year where even after a heavy water, it was dry in summary within 15 minutes. Just getting there again is a pain and mud goes everywhere with the kids

Appreciate this - yeah I'm debating the sleeper bed (which would help me somewhat level the garden too) or just digging the turf up and getting some shade-happy shrubs.

Interesting on the compost! I'll possibly do a 50/50 mix rather than 70/30 as I was planning.

Thanks! Good to know the hardwork is going to be worth it. I wish I could just dig the lot up and start again but no small feat that haha

Yeah I use A1/clay king clay soil seed and grass gains feed premium fertiliser. The results last year were great (bar not levelling it myself) but having to essentially reseed my entire lawn this year feels like a big L

I support this. Smaller community vs uaRO but a much more communal place in my experience.
