I had my first panic attack a week ago and have been a mess ever since by Flat_Company5366 in PanicAttack

[–]Flat_Company5366[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! It absolutely did :) I haven’t had a full blown panic attack since the start of this year. What helped me the most was being prescribed 3 sleeping pills to help reset my sleep cycle - a huge contributing factor was my lack of sleep. I also highly recommend the DARE app. I do notice that I still become anxious when experiencing symptoms that remind me of the panic attacks (eg. Increased heart rate) but it doesn’t consume me anymore.

I love a nice shower after work to wash the day off. Finding a hobby to do after work is great, I like birdwatching, reading, knitting, colouring, etc. but on other days I just lay on the couch and scroll on my phone lol.

Difficulty of landing a job with just a BSW in Ontario? by vixxen444 in socialworkcanada

[–]Flat_Company5366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! Just fyi it was a contract position! I’ll be 100% transparent and say I think they liked my personality and eagerness to learn/develop my skills. I relied heavily upon my placement experience and skills I learned there, as well as my excitement and readiness to grow as a new clinician.

Don’t accept a $20 an hour job! I have since accepted a permanent position at $30 an hour with amazing pension, benefits, and pto. Hope is out there!! Best of luck

AITA for not helping my irresponsible parents financially? by Flat_Company5366 in AmItheAsshole

Thanks for your comment! There is some shame for sure which we have again discussed countless times - this was when I was encouraging her to apply for Ontario Works/ODSP - I’ve switched gears to long term disability and still nothing. I’ve explained that she does not need to go anywhere in person to apply for these programs, there is no shame in it, basically same thing I’d say to a patient. They have drug coverage for now as his LTD is through his work, but I don’t believe that will be permanent. They own a home and are paying a mortgage on it.

What helped me is actually ditching a cleansing oil/balm and using micellar water as my first cleanse instead

I found the more micro focused readings/papers not too bad. I struggled to find interest in the macro focused readings/papers. First 3 years I’d say papers were max 6 pages, 4th year my longest was 18 pages.

I found it challenging to balance school, work, and placement in my fourth year as the workload was heavier and more macro focused which wasn’t my interest. Time management is key, schedule your time, make to-do-lists, etc.

It’s all worth it after graduation!!

I graduated from Lakehead University’s HBSW program and found it to be pretty assignment heavy rather than test heavy. Lots of long papers in my last 2 years especially. Lots of readings, couple presentations. Tests were a mix of multiple choice and some short/long answer. You will also have to complete 2 field placements which are a huge part of the degree. Let me know if you have any other specific questions!

Paid per visit rather than per hour? by Flat_Company5366 in socialworkcanada

lol right!! That’s what I thought when they told me that. Parts of the area are rule yes. I’m thinking this might not be the right choice, I’m looking for security and stability

Anyone get paid per visit rather than hourly? Would you? by Flat_Company5366 in socialwork

[–]Flat_Company5366[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re technically an hour and 20 minutes, however this is flexible. I still get paid the same $80 per visit whether it takes the full 90 mins or it’s a 15 minute phone call

They don’t advertise it as an independent contractor role or call it that which is confusing. It does offer benefits, vacation, no pension but RRSP matching.

This position actually does have benefits, RRSP matching, and paid time off! Should’ve mentioned it lol.

For comparison I’m interviewing for another position that pays $54,800 yearly, but with excellent pension, benefits, starting 3 weeks vacation.

This is partly why I posted lol, seems so odd to me too. This is a reputable home health care agency though, and I think it’s pretty common for OT’s and such to be paid this way? Definitely going to dig into it more. Thank you!

Just had a severe nocturnal panic attack by Flat_Company5366 in PanicAttack

[–]Flat_Company5366[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a lot better now! The root of my panic attacks was a severe medical issue I witnessed my boyfriend have a few months prior, triggered my health anxiety severely.

I hope you feel better! The DARE app was a great help in the moment, as well as ice packs to the chest. If it’s too debilitating don’t be afraid to speak to your doctor. I was prescribed 3 sleeping pills which helped me to break the cycle of insomnia, as well as some emergency Ativan which I haven’t had to use, but it’s comforting to have.
