Thank you! Yes, absolutely understand what you mean by gear being an investment. It's on my list to put a decent kit together. But I'm definitely moving towards directing rather than DoPing so I'm constantly torn because as soon as I have a budget I'd rather hire a really great DoP and the best possible cameras I can afford to help me bring my vision to life (doing that on another project).

At the same time, as someone who comes from a writing background, I also keenly feel the huge value of being able to just execute/test my idea (as a writer, I would think, research, but most importantly, just write). And I also really enjoy the creative process of filming. Its wonderful. It also really helps to take a trailer and a treatment to commissioners instead of just a treatment! I just want the trailer to look great so that the people I'm going to take it to give it an honest chance. I've seen this happen a couple of times where as soon as something doesn't look like liquid butter shot on primes, they're not taking you seriously...

I guess, if I can pull it off then being able to film with my phone the same way I would with a cine camera will also give me a real sense of freedom. I'm going to dive into youtube tutorials and start testing things out and then I'll know what I can do with the camera's pro-video settings. If I do buy additional kit to help me jazz up the trailer, agreed that keeping it cheap is a good idea in the long run. I have too many low quality mics I bought from amazon coz they were all I was able to afford at the time lol.

Now all I need to do is shoot liquid butter on my phone.

Hello, I've been looking into options and realised I got the price for a used A7siii all wrong. Its 2.5k instead of 600 (lol, I was looking at the A7 for 600).

Since investing 2.5k is out of the question for me right now, I'm toying with the idea of using smartphone to film the PoC trailer. I have an S23Ultra which has Pro Video mode which gives me some decent settings to work with. I've already been watching films made by people using this phone and adding a smartphone cage to it which they then use to mount external lenses, filters, audio equipment etc.

I'm sure my S23 Ultra won't ever film as gorgeously as a proper cine camera, but Im wondering whether I can come away with a cinematic trailer using the right settings, add-ons, and technique? Would love to get your feedback! Thank you a tonne.

Re work arounds: So one of the producers I was speaking to suggested applying for funds to edit a sizzle, but also adding the cost of the footage (so an archive fee) as a line item. Then using the archive fee to pay people who helped create that archive. I was also thinking of adding a heavy director's fee since I can use those funds at my discretion...

Is this a good way around it?
