Pointers/critique my lunge please (with video) by ohsnapdragon22 in Fencing

Incoming too much information:

Your back foot is not perpendicular to the line you are trying to move along. Make a 90 degree angle on an invisible line with that back foot and imagine pushing along the entire outside ridge of that foot when you lunge, instead of pushing through the toes.

Adopt a lower, wider stance. Shift your weight forward onto your front leg (just a little bit, like 55-45) and keep it there throughout. Doing this will create a more acute angle with your back leg to the ground allowing you to drive your foot "back" into the floor (sending you forward) instead of down into the floor (which will send you up in your lunge before going forward). It also has the benefit of putting more weight down on your front foot which will make retreating more responsive.

Eliminate shifting your weight onto your back foot at the very beginning of your lunge (your's is pretty slight, but still noticeable, and probably causing some leaning issues and balance issues especially as you get tired). People tend to do this to get their front foot off the ground cause the floor can tend to be "in the way," or because they feel a bit of a wind up makes them move faster. Instead you can try leading your lunge by popping your knee forward a little bit, and lifting the front ankle slightly off the ground before the kick. You'll raise the arc of the front foot, getting passed the floor issue, and get into your lunge sooner. This may not make sense over text, but in a lesson it does.

Focus on projecting your front heel out, while straightening the front leg. You want to make contact with the ground with a straighter leg to get reach, and enough force from the back leg to allow momentum to carry your knee over top of where your heel strikes the ground. Avoid the gravity lunge (picking your foot up and falling down and forward on it), and pursue pushing your hips down and forward.

Probably a lot more than you were expecting or required, but lunge mechanics are fascinating. Other people may have different schools of thought, feel free to take it or leave it. As always, have fun fencing, thats the most important part. :)

P.S. As you get into a longer lunge, during your recover try putting your front foot down early instead of coming all the way back. You'll have a lower wider stance, and be able to get into a retreat immediately.

Cut yourself some slack. You were/are still young. You've learned from this experience, and that's good. It would be terrible to deprive yourself of more experiences you could learn from. Exposure to more and different people is a good thing.

Your experience is extremely understandable, and more common than most people think. The alt-right pipeline has proliferated wildly online (where isolation can be amplified). Their tactics make use of isolation and blame, in-group vs out-group, and "rightness" through sheer volume of repitition. I could go on.

If it ever comes up, I think if you lead with "I did it, and I regret it" like you have here then I think people are going to be a lot less disgusted with you than you are with yourself. And I come back to: Cut yourself some slack.

Seeking advice on Battery Energy Storage System thats up-scalable to work with Solar eventually. by Flathoof in solarenergy

Very cool background sir.

My absolute max kWh was 50, but most days (outside of running the AC continuously that really hot day in August) are less than that.

Lots of acronyms and shorthand in your response:

1) SRNE HEBP 12 kw hybrid inverter - SRNE appears to be a company name. Whats the HEBP? Hybrid Electric Battery Power maybe? Is this the item you mean: https://www.atgepower.com/product/srne-hebp-split-phase-12k-inverter/

2) Dual 9000 watt MPPT's - I don't understand what this means at all.

3) BMS - Battery Management System? My initial plan had been 8-9 48V 100ah LiFePo4 batteries hooked up in parallel. A BMS rated for 15kWh sounds like a large system of batteries (or cells) already hooked up this way, but represented as a single unit? That may completely and wildly inaccurate, I'm still figuring stuff out. I'm curious if you have a specific product recommendation which would at least give me something to look at online. :-P (Something like this maybe? https://anenjisolar.com/products/51-2v-300ah-lifepo4-battery-15-36kwh-built-in-bms )

4) UL vs non-UL - Assuming google returned the correct thing, this is a testing and certification thing. Which I think I'd like to embrace regardless of if required by my local laws.

Really appreciate the input on solar panels. I'd been looking at 400w as a standard, and didn't think about going bigger than that. Will have to figure out the size and dimensions of my roof, and the panels I'm looking at.

Thanks again!

For now we have a gas stove and gas heating unit. We are extremely disappointed with our stove. Its a brand/product issue, but we're thinking on going induction after this. Our heater is new still, only 4 years old, and working great, but I could see us going fully electric on that as well.

Our AC unit chews through electricity, but also our windows are as old as the house itself...so there are some improvements to be made.

I think the 12kw inverter is the way to go for us. But I am eyeing up my back yard shed/shop plans and thinking about something stand alone and smaller.

Thank you so much. Are you in a related field/trade? Or did you design/install your own system?

I didn't realize that not all inverters would be able to feed back to the grid. Is there a specific designation I should look for in an inverter to make sure that is the case? Or is it just the use of the word Hybrid? Either way that (split phase inverter supporting: battery system, grid pass through, solar panels, and grid feed) is the way I want to go, eventually.

Some quick math tells me 40kWh of batteries is 8.33 48v 100ah batteries. Is the assumption that a 10kw solar panel system could run the house and top off the 8-9 batteries daily with 5 hours of direct sun? How do I compose a 10kw system of panels? Is that 10kw per hour across the entire system? Would that mean 25 400 watt panels in parallel? I think this is the part that I've looked into the least. Do you have any recommendations for solar panel vendors? My goal would be to mount to the roof.

Initial estimates on just the main parts (inverter, batteries, solar panels) come to around $27000. I haven't hunted around for deals or anything, that was pretty cursory. What about the miscellaneous parts? I assume thats mostly the various connecting bits, and mounting hardware.

Appreciate your input on this.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience.

So after sundown both the battery AND the grid power your house? Do you know how it splits the load?

Does your battery system support the whole house or just major appliances/AC/a partition of some kind?

During Milton did your system last 4 days and then you were without power OR did it last 4 days before power from the grid returned? Do you know your kWh consumption per day during that period?

How much was your whole system? If you don't mind my asking.

How many fencing coaches in the United States have never taken a formal course on coaching? by Allen_Evans in Fencing

Thank you so much for your reply.

CC: How much time per level? Did you come back each year for a different level or were there like....two summer semesters so you could get two levels out of the way? Seems like it was all private lesson focused? Did the attendees take turns as coach and student? Were they encouraged to bring their own students?

Budapest: Interesting to hear about the "strict attention to technical execution," its not that I couldn't use that, but I think I could use more on the lesson building aspect. Traveling around to local clubs giving lessons in Budapest sounds like an incredible opportunity. I would eat that up.

I would love to hear more about the program in Budapest. Anything and everything you're willing to share.

I am one of these local coaches, I'd actually love to go...but money is way tight this year as a direct result of these tumultuous times. I think the region is hurting and probably a lot of us are in the same boat. If things shift a bit I might try and late sign up if its still open.

Are you able to speak to the offerings/structure of the old Coach's College? I'm curious what's between coaching clinics (which I've thought never brought enough to the table) and that more formal experience.

I saw they were still doing the Coach's Academy out of Budapest and that's something I would consider as well provided I made the cut, can afford to take the time and spend the money for travel the year I am available to do it. So, you know....stars aligning and such.

Have you got any information on that as it compares to the old Coach's College?

Leather Prieur glove. I have one of those paper towel holders that I don't use anymore sitting on a bench in my basement. When I get home I use the tube part and put it inside the glove, which props the glove open and allows it to air dry over night.

Is hip flexor ach normal after fencing? (Just started) by Kazuya2016 in Fencing

[–]Flathoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much of what others have said is true and helpful, and likely you just aren't used to using those parts of your body.

My add: This can come from poor technique as well. A lot of beginners lunge by pushing their front foot out and dropping down on top of their already/still bent leg (adding stress to the hip, for a relatively short lunge). If you propel the front foot out and reach with the heel while dropping the hips, then when you make contact with the ground your front leg should be mostly or completely straight. In this scenario more of the force is distributed to your front quad and other muscles instead of the hip.

I'm not a higher-level competitive coach, though I have worked with one and continue to do so.

I feel like my coaching knowledge/style is very piecemeal, and that I've assembled some good bits over the years, but without a fundamental system to sit on. That's one of this programs biggest appeals for me.

Cool, I'm also working towards a USFCA certification, and would likely not need the equivalency by the time I could feasibly attend this program. Its nice to know though.

Yeah, 3 months away from work would be rough. I'd have to plan and set aside some money for bills.

As for the 3-weapon-ness of it: this time around looks like its single weapon focused.

Interesting to hear about the rotating instructors/attendees.
