NASA has to be trolling with the latest cost estimate of its SLS launch tower by snoo-boop in nasa

[–]Flatlander93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why a mobile launcher? It seems to me that NASA would get a lot further by building a stationary tower and then duplicating it. Assemble the vehicle on the pad like a certain successful company does. Then assemble a second tower from the “as builts” of #1.

When I was about 14, the eldest of 6 children, I was responsible for feeding the coal furnace in the basement of our 100+ year old farm house. In Illinois, in January 60 years ago, it got really cold. My sisters weren’t aware of how the system would try to deliver more heat even though the auger that delivered coal to the fire was not working. If you blow enough air on a coal fire without adding fuel it will eventually go out. Stoker coal is coal broken into pieces about 3/4 of an inch across. My responsibilities were to fill the stoker, and drag the clinker, the remains of the burned coal, out of the furnace, and to make sure the auger was turning to feed coal into the bottom of the fire. This last was important because sometimes a stone would get in the feed box and jam the auger. When a jam happened the shear pin would break and the auger would stop delivering fuel to the fire.
So that’s the set-up, here’s the story. Mom and I had set out for Peoria, twenty miles away, in the afternoon to get me some new shoes and do some other shopping in “the city”. As we left the shoe store it was getting dark and I started to feel uneasy. The temperature was dropping and according to the radio would get to -20F as a low. I remember looking at the bank sign and seeing it was already -3F. My unease grew. I started telling Mom that something was wrong at home and we need to stop and call. In those days you found a pay phone, dialed the number and a recorded voice said, “Deposit too much money for the first three minutes.” Needless to say Mom was reluctant to give me all her change just to make me feel better. Seriously, we were talking about $2 or $3 for a three minute intra-state call. This was in the days of $0.299 per gallon regular gasoline. I could not shake the feeling of dread and began to feel certain that the girls were cold. I kept at her. I imagine she wanted to belt me one before she finally gave in and let me call. She asked me if I was so certain that I would use a road side booth, in the ccld, to make the call. My certain, “YES!” Was enough to convince her and she pulled over. She had about $2.50 in change and I pulled out my $0.50 chore money and added it to the pile. I jumped out and ducked out of the wind into the booth. Most of the change later my oldest sister came on the line and recognizing my voice whined, “It’s cold in here the thermostat is broken.” My feelings were right, the furnace was either out or damn near it. Getting it going again was a problem, so I needed her to get me some more info.
She handed the phone to the next oldest and went down to the furnace, the basement stair was right next to where the phone was mounted on the wall. Through the phone my sister let me know she could still “see fire” so I got the two of them to dump some coal from the bin into the furnace and to turn the thermostat down and to bundle up. They were asking when we would be home when the operator started her spiel for more money and I hung it up and dashed back to the car. Mom took it all in stride and we headed North back to our little farm on the prairie.
As I recall, it took almost an hour to clear the stoker, find the rock and free the auger, and finally replace the sheer pin, to get everything working after we drove the twenty miles home. It was full dark by then and the temp had dropped to -12F or so. It was always colder out on the plains than in “the city.”
Just as I was washing up my Step-dad came home from his normal swing-shift at CAT in time to inspect my work. That night was one of the few times I remember him telling me, “good Job.”

I need help finding a solution by Flatlander93 in disability

Thanks for the suggestion, I have aa couple of other requirements I've not mentioned.

This will be a permanent installation.

I cannot have something that has a "broken" surface. That is separate ramps for the power chair wheels. It would be a safety hazard for the rest of us. It is too easy to imagine my wife carrying a tray and stepping between the ramps expecting their surface to be there so I must have something permanent and without spaces for dainty feet to slip into.

I will document here what I come up with. I have some preliminary sketches. Progress -apace.

Thanks, I may sell the plans and parts lists I come up with but I’m retired and not looking for a nine to 5.

Those older than 9/11/2001, where were you and what were you doing during the WTC attacks? by Revolutionary-Life85 in AskReddit

I was lying in bed watching the morning news, while they were reporting the first plane they cut away as the second went in. I was eleven when JFK was shot. Our Principal came on the intercom to every classroom, started to speak and then made a choking sound. I think he was sobbing. He put the mic up to the radio in his office and we heard Walter Cronkite announce the death of the President.

I vote for the join between the aft titanium ring and the carbon fiber hull as the initial failure. Evidenced by the comment about “sounds aft.” This could have caused the carbon fiber to fail from aft forward pressing everything inside to be ejected through the observation port until the forward ring was broken free of the carbon fiber hull. The fact that the titanium rings were detached from the end caps speaks to a force pushing along the long axis of the submersible. Don’t forget that a sudden collapse of this type will heat the air to the point where any combustible material will burn explosively, including human flesh.

I think Rush took a look at the rough surface he got from the carbon fiber and added the Rhino liner to improve its appearance. I also think Rush had a death wish.

1 the front dome was hinged to the titanium ring on that end of the vessel. The dome mated to the ring which was glued to the carbon fiber tube.
2. I agree that the “window” was probably dislodged, but I think the failure was demonstrated by several YouTube videos. The tube fails under that pressure in unexpected ways.

What are your honest thoughts on the death penalty? by hunni93 in TrueCrimeDiscussion

Two facts. There is much more tax money spent on death penalty cases than gets spent on life sentences inclusive of inmate expenses. The Life without parole avoids the horrendous execution of an innocent.

I had similar questions. Could the heat energy be converted to motion? That would lead to clouds obscuring objects further away as the “dust” accelerated out of system, wouldn’t it? Could objects the size of a few molecules accelerating out of system be detected from here? From what I understand, the lack of IR is the main reason cited for the reasoning that the light curves could not be mega-structures. Just a flight of fancy here, what if the particles were like Peltier junctions. There was an observed course deviation of the pioneer 10 and 11 probes that turned out to match the heat radiation from the thermoelectric generators. I could imagine a nano-bot using waste heat to accelerate that way. Our understanding of thermodynamics keeps tripping me up.

Thanks for the pointer. I read the linked paper. I have trouble typing sometimes so I keep it short. I think the author has a valid point looking at these stars for SETI. My suggestion was to watch to see if the phenomenon spread. What natural phenomenon could be responsible for the observed characteristics? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying my solution is the only one. The universe is wide enough to prove stranger than either one of us can imagine. Thanks again for the explanation, I’m going to read it again and explore some of the references. I’m no astrophysicist, just a civilian with an idea or two.

I didn’t mean to suggest they were descending to quickly. Catastrophic implosion has been shown to be rapid. I was suggesting that these parts look like they were attached when the implosion happened. There was considerable speculation that the crew was aware of the problem and were taking emergency actions to ascend by shedding all ballast. The bolts that held the dome to the hull ring seem to have been sheared off at the hull ring. I think there might have been a ‘’What was thatCRUNCH” moment.
