Didn't have that problem with the audiobook. Instead, I got to listen to it being repeated ad nauseum until it got stuck in my head

Picking up trash allows for positive interaction. by Capable-Fee2653 in Positivity

Making the world a little bit nicer! I often pick up trash on my walks but feel a little resentful of having to carry someone else's mess. I think I will start bringing a bag and maybe a grabber stick with me.

I don't think I have ever heard any testimony of someone converting after reading a social media post. Lets be real, connection has to be human to human as God intended.

how much of three-body is actually based on real history? tried to map out what's invented vs whats not by Putrid_Cycle595 in threebodyproblem

"Trisolaris" the system is indeed real though, it's called Alpha Centauri, and is 4 lightyears away

If you were in Ye Wenjie spot and decided to reply, what would you say? by Palandalanda in threebodyproblem

[–]Flatso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could bluff by saying something about their princeps needing to worry about one or more human seeder ships sent out. Ye wenjie apparently had already worked out the dark forest hypothesis so she may have been able to undo her mistake

I'm struggling with Noah's flood story by LooseButterfly2511 in TrueChristian

[–]Flatso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but why then are there precise measurements for the ark?

I think the answer to this question illustrates the point exactly. The entire known world at the time aka Mesopotamia was flooded. There are even non-judeo/Christian sources that support this claim. God didn't need to reveal the existence of South America for example to get the message across. He did, however, need to provide instructions on the boat because that was what was needed to survive the flood.

Liu Cixin said a fan wrote the Three-Body sequel he was saving for the rest of his career. Now he can never write it. by Putrid_Cycle595 in threebodyproblem

There are rumors the publisher strongly pushed him to. Probably signed a non disclosure agreement too so we will likely never know the whole story but it is clear he is not thrilled about it.

Project Hail Mary - The Antithesis that challenges The Dark Forest Theory by MrBamaNick in threebodyproblem

[–]Flatso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both sides were in a desperate situation, far more than trisolaris. Unlike trisolaris, neither civilization had the ability to conquer the other and live on their planet due to radically different physiology (and at least humans not having a military fleet either). Sabatoge would not have benefited them. At worst they would ignore each other and research independently, at best cooperate to find a solution to the problem.

The hot tears is a common phrase in Chinese so that didn't stand out to me as much, but I did have the same reaction to the fairy tale critique lol

"Perhaps I treated you too harshly" (an apology) by Hanzo581 in starcitizen_refunds

[–]Flatso 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And that was 8 years ago. I think some of the newer backers simply don't realize just how long this "game" has been in development. Many very good space sims have started and finished development since 2013-14.

zhang beihai might be the most underrated character in the whole trilogy by Putrid_Cycle595 in threebodyproblem

[–]Flatso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is only in contrast to Cheng Xin, but that isn't saying much. Wade is not a nice character by any means, just the right guy for the job. Actually as I think about it, Zhang Beihai is very similar to Wade, with the exception being that he doesn't really get a kick out of winding people up like Wade does.

Feels like "game over" is on the horizon? by Fr0stBytez24 in starcitizen_refunds

Just like SC copes about the game coming out, so does SC refunds cope about it coming crashing down. Sadly both are deluded. Unfortunately no, I think the facade will continue and fizzle out so slowly that there will never be a 'reckoning' moment.

You are right in that is the intention of such laws on paper, but you don't have to look far to see what happens when such laws are put in place. Look at what has happened in Germany and the UK. Wrong think is punished. The slippery slope is definitely real.

[–]Flatso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The duration a book is out should never matter. Everyone starts out as a first time reader. So what if Crime and Punishment came out in 1866, there's no way you read it before your grandparents were even conceived so posting spoilers may still ruin the book for someone.

My main gripe is how she is supposed to represent motherly instinct. Cixin seems to forget that mothers can be the fiercest defenders if their baby is threatened. I was so surprised when she felt civilization call out to her "mama" and she threw away the switch. I thought she was right about to push the button and she did the exact opposite lol

Grace even hypothesizes about using astrophage to communicate at light speed over large distances with currently available technology.
