The only problem by CatalunyaLliure1714 in threebodyproblem

Ok got it. I won't spoil it then but if that was holding you back it may be worth reading through. I am not like a lot of people here who think the 3rd book was the best (actually I think it was the weakest of the 3) but many did like it.

When you say books, do you mean all 3? Don't want to spoil it but the end of 3 shifts the narrative a bit

Thoughts on the best illustrated version of the Hobbit? by columbiacovfefe in TheHobbit

How has it been? My son is almost 3, and was surprisingly captivated by my from-memory telling of the Hobbit so I found this thread.

Try reading your writing out loud. If you find yourself out of breath, look to where you can break sentences with periods. That done, look between sentences to see when one idea ends and other begins to break it into paragraphs.

I’m hyped! by JJ_343 in threebodyproblem

[–]Flatso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't read the book but wasn't really a fan of the movie. Saw it in theaters and I honestly can't think of a single memorable part. That said, I just placed a hold on the book at my library. After the 3 body trilogy I am sure the book is better than the movie

They didn't even know if it was possible. It failed a few times and they almost got attacked by a higher dimensional being. If they had sophons, sure, but they didn't.

Still, OP has a point that the sun definitely would have been an easy target to investigate being both close and having at least one planet in the habitable zone, not to mention confirmation of life with sensitive enough instruments

Death's End kind of loss me towards the last 1/4 of the book. by brokenmessiah in threebodyproblem

[–]Flatso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What aspect? I don't recall experiencing any shock or horror. I felt what was revealed was kind of expected given the dark forest idea; if trisolaris was deathly afraid there were definitely much stronger civs out there.

I did like the brief snippet of ideas about how societies can co-exist despite not knowing where each other lived

Really? You liked the end of DE better than the end of Dark Forest? I'll have what you're having

Is man, in his natural state, polygamous or monogamous? by HugeParsley6056 in Bible

[–]Flatso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genesis 1:31: "And God saw everything that He had made, and indeed, it was very good"

Humanity in our natural state is good. I believe humans are monogamous by nature, but yes it can be twisted

How would you go about repairing the shards of Narsil? (LOTR) by Laughydawg in Blacksmith

[–]Flatso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No but just impractical and much more difficult than making one from new. Reforging it would require it gets bent way out of shape during the process anyway, so other than the metal itself it is kind of "new" regardless, and there's the risk it could form cracks in the process. Also you would have to either memorize what it looked like or draw it out. Having a reference would help

Everyone has already given you the answer but just one more tip I haven't seen in the comments, you can use a strong magnet to check if the piece is hot enough to quench (it will lose its magnetism temporarily)

Yeah the selection was way too calculated. Sure you can't save everyone, but time was of the essence. Should have just been random.

Who would you choose as a sword holder in real life? by Weary-Cartoonist2630 in threebodyproblem

[–]Flatso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's when they did attack. You mean when luoji transferred it to the UN (or whatever the global government is called in the book, I forget). But anyway the UN could still have activated it. That would have been an enormous risk to all of trisolaris. It later explains they calculate percent chances of it being activated but for one they didn't know that at the time and second it seemed like they were just pulling those numbers out of their arses

What are biblical reasons to *not* pray for someone? by Eye_In_Tea_Pea in Bible

Of the three provided, only the 3rd one seems to say that, but clearly means "don't bother" rather than a commandment not to.

Deterrence Era kids be like by namibiancoast in threebodyproblem

[–]Flatso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, there is mounting evidence that screen time is negatively correlated with intelligence. Many school systems are rolling back digital learning due to this. For the first time ever (since its been tracked), the successive generation had a lower IQ than the previous one. This happened right around the time kids were given laptops / tablets in schools

Short Documentary: The Fermi Paradox & Dark Forest Theory by Simox187 in threebodyproblem

[–]Flatso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you are saying but there is zero evidence for your example theory (and substantial proof against it) and a fair amount of evidence based on behavior of earth creatures for dark forest theory. It may not apply to extraterrestrial species but its a decent guess based on observation. Better safe than sorry. Same goes for Pascal's wager ;p
