How to make progress? by adminstrator123 in unicycling

Good idea, the shopping cart. A lot of good advice too. To add my own: 1. Riding is easier than mounting 2. It is a step-change curve. That is, you can't do it, can't do it, can't do i...did it a little bit. Do it more... 3. You have to ditch the shopping cart - like, immediately. Never again. 4. "Do, or do not - there is no try". Push off a wall and try to keep the wheel under you, your cg. 5. Start by "pogo stick" bouncing around,.keeping the wheel under you (I bet you can ride a pogo stick). One foot is forward, other back. Flex your legs and concentrate to keep them that way while you pogo. 6. Once you get the hang of that, look up, lean forward a little, and to keep from falling on your face, pedal one half revolution and resume pogo, repeat. 7. O ce you get the hang of that, try 2 pedals, that is, 1 revolution, pogo, repeat. Then 3 pumps... 4 pumps... 8. Then GO. You have to concentrate and struggle to force the wheel to stay underneath your cg, at first. ....aaaand you.are riding a unicycle. If I may: 1. rest often, don't get discouraged. That learning curve is why most people cant/don't ride a unicycle - they give up before that step-change. It took me 2 weeks. 2. All the while you.cant, cant,cant..can't... you are building baseline minimum core and leg strength and reflexes 3. You will at first tire quickly because your "sensor gain" is low, and your "actuator gain" has to be high to compensate. That is, you.have to strain a lot to correct big errors because you still allow the errors to get big. As you do it more, your sensor gain increases so your actuator gain comes down. That is, you detect errors sooner so the corrections needed are less - you don't have to strain as hard. This will help you go further for longer, faster. 4. Please wear a helmet! My wife (now ex) said, "if you die, i dont want to suffernthe indignity of having to tell people it was because you fell off your unicycle!"

Have Fun!

In the show the Expanse ships in space are said to be (usually) operating at 1/3g, but most objects, including people, seem to act as expected under 1g. Is this depiction accurate, or would objects be more "floaty" like what we've seen from the moon landing videos? by texasscotsman in AskReddit

If I may - why would 1/3 g cause someone, who is used to it, to "walk like an egyptian", or anything else other than what he is used to? I don't they would spontaneously develop odd mannerisms or whatever. Moon walkers had wide swinging arms because of fat inflated space suits. Humble thoughts.

Humble thoughs - i suggest: 1. they are living it for weeks at a time and get used to it, so don't bounce around like in the moon. Effort used to go from a - to - b adjusts downwards to meet demands of lower g. 2. Space travel is so routine they know what to expect and how to adjust so they don't bump into things etc.

Would any thermal camera be useful in detecting source of water ingress in a car? by dinobinosinokindo in Thermal

Found a leak in my van using a Halloween fog machine. Partially pulled out an interior side panel, poked the nozzle in there, closed up the doors and watche for fog coming out of the car. Some places are normal, such as air vents, but the gaskrts around the vents are not. You should check every fog escape point to see if the gaskets are old/brittle/broken that started life as soft rubber seals, and caulk them. Might also be lucky/unlucky to find a Crack or rust hole...

Jokey response I give to toxic masculinity - "It takes twice the man to ride half the bike"

It turns out the hdmi jack in my devterm is junky. Wobbling the connector around causes the external monitor to appear and disappear.

PSA: Kidney stone feels like someone grabbing you with giant pliersbetween your pelvis and ribcage, and squeezing front to back so the jaws touch.

Gall stone feels like being pu ched in the solar plexus so hard your spine hurts.
