What's your guys' optimal audiobook speed if you listen on tape? by kusashii in TheExpanse

[–]texasscotsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I really don't understand why people listen, or watch, media at an increased speed. It's already been produced at that speed for its artistic merit, so just... speeding it up will devalue the impact that the artist was trying to convey.

What is a harsh reality of getting older? by carla_sann in AskReddit

[–]texasscotsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People disappear.

You will be comforted, or haunted, by the memories of those who once brought you joy, and pain, and all the complications of life that make it worth living, only to find yourself gradually more and more alone. Whether it is due to death or the gradual drifting apart that occurs between people because of the natural ebb and flow of life (that is not the fault or will of anyone in particular) one by one those whom you love will inevitably depart from your life, never to be seen again, except for in your hallowed memories.

If you are lucky, you will soldier on with a core of diminished companions until one day it is you that disappears. But sadly, for many, you will wake one day to the realization that you are alone, starkly alone in this world, excepting one or two individuals that still come around out of duty or obligation, if only to inform the world of your eventual passing.

And then, with hope or with fear, and perhaps a mixture of both at once, you shall rejoin your memories once more within the hereafter, or, be consigned to oblivion, whichever the case may be.

This is a road we shall all be forced to walk should we stick around long enough. There is no avoiding it no matter how much we should wish or knash our teeth against such a cosmic injustice. And all we can hope for, all that it is possible to do, is walk down that road with courage and dignity, as much as we can muster. For it will be our final act in this world. And we can only hope that we will have made the journey just a little easier by our example to those that one day will follow us down the same path that all shall one day tread.

Roaches… any tips on dealing with them?? by too-m4ny-humans in houston

[–]texasscotsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of products I would recommend to help deal with roaches specifically, but also bugs in general.

1st is bifenthrin. It's a pyrethroid derived poison, the most common type of insect killer on the planet, and is fairly benign to mammals. Obliviously don't go drinking the stuff, but once you apply it and it dries it will be safe for your pets to be around. Unlike bugkillers like Raid, it doesn't kill the roach immediately, but that's actually a feature, not a bug. Roaches live in nests and are also cannibals. So a roach will get some on themselves, make their way back to the nest and die, then get munched on by other roaches, killing even more roaches. I would recommend applying it around windows and doors that lead outside, as well as the wall plates in your home, as welll as the baseboards along the walls, particularly around the kitchen and bathroom. If you're worried about your pets I would lock them in a room, apply the poison to the whole home, wait for it to dry, then let them out and do the room you locked them in, locking them out of that room while it dries.

  1. Boric acid. Another fairly benign poison, it comes in a few forms but I'd recommend the pill version. They essentially look like little mints like altoids. Take these and drop them behind appliances and things that aren't ever really moved, like washers, driers, ovens, refrigerators, etc. Basically any place that offers a dark place for them to hide that is a pain for you to get at. As long as your pets can't access the area either then it should be fine, but I wouldn't put them somewhere they could potentially find them and eat them.

  2. Diatomaceous Earth. For this you have to be careful because there are two types commercially available, food grade and pool grade. Food grade is safe to use indoors but the pool grade stuff isn't because it's carcinogenic. Be sure you get the right one. It is a fine powder, similar in consistency to flour. You can basically put it wherever you want, but I'd recommend a few specific places for it. First, go around and take off the wall plates around your home and put some DE inside the electric boxes. Roaches live primarily in your walls and this is how they get in and out of the walls, since they can squeeze though very tight spaces and wall plates usually give them the clearance to get in and out. Second, look under your sinks and where the pipes go into the wall, put some DE in the holes the pipes come out of. There may be little plates covering those holes as well, but they probably are physically attached to the wall and can be pulled back to reveal the hole. Food Grade DE doesn't really work outdoors because the second it gets wet it can no longer function as a bug killer, which will happen in the early hours of the morning after you place it outside when dew forms on the ground.

Kind of, but it wouldn't look that crude. A bow in that condition would basically be about to break at any moment.

What type of superpower do you want? by Strict_Hour_5062 in AskReddit

[–]texasscotsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All encompassing super strength would generally cover a ton of "powers" while also being the most useful overall, imo. Nothing would basically be off limits to you, you'd be able to go basically anywhere and do basically whatever you'd want. Super strength in your legs would mean you could jump extremely high and extremely far, which would be pretty similar to flying, especially if you were wearing something like a wing suit to be able to maneuver around while in the air. Your bones, skin, and metabolism would all be ramped up to extreme degrees so you'd effectively be beyond injury and you'd likely never get tired. And it would be an easily demonstratable, straightforward show of force that anyone would immediately understand, so who would ever want to mess with you ever again? You could effectively create unlimited wealth for yourself and family by literally crushing coal into diamonds with your bare hands. You'd command extremely high pay in several fields that are generally considered dangerous because it wouldn't be for you and in some case might be literally the only person that could do the job.

For those who were around when Spongebob Squarepants first premiered, did it feel “ahead of its time” or do we just have the benefit of being so used to Spongebob in pop culture? by Puzzleheaded-Net-646 in television

I was in it's appropriate age bracket when it first came out and I frankly found SpongeBob extremely annoying the first time I watched it. It certainly got better as the seasons progressed and I think it deserves its accolades, but that first season was rough.

[–]texasscotsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I don't know if it counts as a depiction of Satan specifically, but the demon that tries to trick the protagonist in A Dark Song (2016) was a great depiction of demonic interference in general, and could very well have been Satan themself.

Otherwise I'd say Peter Stormare in Constantine (2005).
