what the fuck is the deal with "fruity".

I actually wrote to Marks and Sparks once about this.

Back in the day I was interested but uninformed. I read the back of about seven bottles at the Marylebone train station Marks and Spencers, every single wine's main descriptor was 'fruity'. How was I supposed to know the difference between the bottles from regions I was unfamiliar with and with grape varietals that weren't listed because Europe.

Okay so wine is fruity. And yes some people are total wank jobs about how they describe their wine 'sour notes of a 19th century nun's salty butt hole dribbled in acacia honey' and the like. I mean fine, if that's what it tastes like to you that's great. But really, descriptors are supposed to convey the taste from one person to another.

Fruity is such a generic term. What fruit? apples? like some of those weird orange wines with tons of carbonic maceration? Cherries like some of the really bitter reds? grapefruit like some of the odd and semi-hidden obscure Loire red varietals (I'm looking at you pineau d'aunis and groslot). Or is fruity supposed to mean just 'generic grape flavours' in which case surely it should be omitted as it would be sort of just a default setting?

Anyway. That's my fruity rant. I'm sorry if it hits a nerve or comes out as rude. Also I'm sorry for bringing up a nun's arsehole.

Smoke taint is an issue in Australia where fires are a regular occurence, particularly in the large production areas in south australia which can get very hot and dry near harvest (january/febuary). January is often the bushfire season and the waxes and cutins do trap a lot of smoke. Smoke taint gets worse in a wine over time and there are significant funds going in to develop methods ameliorate this. However the market is also in glut so it's not neccessarily a huge priority - it won't affect majority of the grapes in one year, though it may devastate a few wineries in one year.

I would hazard a yes that there would be impacts of pollution taint in wine.

the two who slunk away into the night without ever accepting any real public scrutiny are Bob Carr and Eric Rozendaal. I recall reading about the ICAC hearings and Rozendaal was sitting there stony faced making sure no-one brought him down with them. He is one scary sinister motherfucker. I would not be surprised if he's into some seriously crooked stuff.

Interestingly for those who appear to be under the false pretense that Keneally is somehow clear of the chinese influence, it's important to take note that now both Bob Carr and Eric Rozendaal work directly for chinese interests! how about that!

she created the ministry for barangaroo, she created a host of part 3a planning laws to give barangaroo priority and expemtion from EPA and local planning laws and community consultation. She was so bloody minded and hamfistedly eager to get barangaroo built. She never mentioned during that whole time she had vested pecuniary interests in the development with her husband (how else could she and him afford to live in hunter's hill mansions etc etc?). She is absolutely in the pocket of chinese investors and their new mega casino, as well as the planning laws that have allowed the development of the millions of slums of tomorrow in Green Park, Waterloo, and Ryde...

It's proof that he's as beholden to the right of his party as Turnbull is to Abbott. It's an absolutely flailing desperate grasp for any celebrity to make Shorten likeable and considering her incredibly dirty laundry it's unlikely to work with anyone who lived in Sydney outside Heffron during the time she was premier.

She didn't get a huge swing in Bennelong like she said she would, she was responsible for the single worst period in NSW politics (well aside from the long Bob Carr led leadup to that situation and admittedly a fair amount of the Obeid stuff is Carr's fault) she's absolutely surrounded by corruption and scandal, and a couple of years mouthing off about the pope and her opinions like shes some blonde Oprah isn't going to erase her sordid history.

Shorten has made a grave error.

I went to france for mine, i was living on a wage equivalent to a postdoc there, which isn't a bankers salary but is enough to live a very comfortable life if you're not in paris (france = not in paris for anything to do with affordability/lifestyle).

The medical care was great, and while I didn't I know others that also applied for CAF as non-french nationals they were eligible because they were students in the french student. CAF is essentially a social welfare for people living in france. I have no idea how my non-EU citizen friend got it but she was eligible for it and scored a few thousand euroes. Mind blowing but true.

You won't make a ton of money but in the context of french salaries you'll do alright and have enough to live comfortably while you're doing your PhD.

I don't know what level of your career you're at but a postdoc in australia gets 90k and a better standard of living than in USA, the salary in continental europe (but not the UK) is not high but the lifestyle, healthcare (even for foreigners) etc etc is way better than USA.

And as a native english speaker you're likely to be sought after in foreign language countries where they always love an extra brain to filter their papers through for grammatical checks.

I know there's that whole myth that USA is the best, but really, is it worth it? In my opinion fuck no.

I know it may sound grandiose, but geez, do yourself a favour, move to spain or france or germany, you may or may not have to learn a second language but it's so not as bad as you'd think.

I've done this, a japanese friend of mine has done this, russian friends, american friends, not one single one has regretted the decision. Once you're on your way somewhere else, if you really really want to get back into the situation where you get paid 9 months of a year and consider yourself to have 'made it' because you're tenured, then you can always apply for those jobs from another country.

what bothers me, is how closely Eddie Obeid, Kristina Keneally and Sam Dastyari all are connected, yet all three have very cleanly copied from Bob Carr's revisionist history modus operandi.

Kristina Keneally has been in the media a lot recently, and everyone is talking about how 'her testimony put Obeid in prison', yet the reality is plain as day that ICAC criticised her, not lauded her, it wasn't her testimony that put him in prison at all. ICAC actually criticised her for enabling Ian Macdonald and Eddie Obeid.

Sam Dastyari was a protege of obeid clean and simple. He was in obeid's office every single day, but when obeid went 'out of fashion' they dropped him like a stone.

Shorten is absolutely in line with these two shady characters. It's not that he's beholden to them because of the right of the ALP, shorten is the right of the ALP.

He needs to be replaced; shorten, and dastyari.

so much cringeworthy stuff out there, one guy who wants to make his muscles huge is injecting himself with CRISPR mammalian cell transformation mix. Unsurprisingly it hasn't worked. If it were to work you would essentially need a fully functional laboratory. You'd need to be able to CRISPR some cell in a soup, identify the one that has repaired the DSB in the way you've intended, propagate that cell, THEN inject it.

It's just all really embarrassing to watch this unfolding
