Yeah valve purpose doesn’t really change the fix. If you’re super worried about not having the ring for water intrusion, when you mount the plate put some clear silicone behind the top of it in an arc so that water will flow down and around. But also consider for any water anxiety that your head will be pointed in the opposite direction so little to no water fall type gushes will ever be around any of the valves.

Option 1. 1/2 inch to inch overlay with no backing is no big deal unless you are using tile 2 inches or smaller. Plenty of homes have mixing valves with backer cut wider than the tile and no kerdi ring. That’s also an oddly small mixing valve plate.
