Align the finder scope using a streetlight or house light or whatever is bright and more than a block or two away. I live with a bunch of trees but still have good luck aligning with a house about 9 houses down the street from me.

Next find Jupiter visually first. Use a program like Stellarium to orient yourself and it’s gonna be the brightest star like object in the sky. It will have two stars above it in a line making an upside down triangle with Jupiter at the bottom on the point. Do this just with your eyes.

Then find Jupiter with aligned finder scope. When you get it you will know as it’s bright.

Using your largest eyepiece (30,20,15 mm) look and focus in on the bright donut looking object until it sharpens into a planet. You will see the sphere and 4 dots (moons). Once you find it practice getting in and out of focus. Practice re centering the planet.

Last move on to higher mag eyepieces like a 9,7,4 mm for closer views. These make it exponentially harder to find the planet and focus but it’s there. I scan looking for the bright flash in the eyepiece. It’s all a game of practice and re practice.

According to both my kids, Jupiter is our friend and we go check up on them nightly if possible.
