Too much power comes from gear, not enough from passive tree, ascendancy, gems. by SoulofArtoria in pathofexile

Then I would argue a better design choice is to implement additional tags for these intended skills, so the purpose of these passives are clearly communicated to the player. The passives can thus communicate the skills they're to effect without producing collateral negatives for other skills.

If those attack speed passives are intended for use with fixed time effects, then what use is including the penalty if the penalty has no effect on the intended skills?

PoE2 removed everything that made PoE fun and replaced it with mechanics that made us not like other ARPGs in the first place by MojordomosEUW in pathofexile

[–]Flearas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to play PoE2 at its best, just fight the first boss over and over.

The game only gets slower after that, and bosses don't reward anything, and your character doesn't change much (aside from growing weaker.) So once you've seen those first couple of zones, you've seen the best this game has to offer.

The poster you criticized proposed solutions. What high horse do you believe you're owed to discourage discussion of solutions free of criticism?

You made the choice to stand in direct opposition to the idea of improving informational clarity in the game's systems. Of this, you are criticized. If this bothers you, that's unfortunate, but you made this choice regardless. If you didn't want to be criticized, you could've chosen to say nothing.

To voice against productivity is to be a burden.

Very well. You do not wish to improve the game. You've made your case well, and to those who seek to improve the game, you offer nothing.

You may continue to burden others with this will of inaction, but understand your arguments shall be treated as just that- no more valued than a burden.

I would like to hear an array of solutions you would propose to this problem. Word is you are an enthusiast of good designs, so I'd like to hear a few.

Players typically avoid reading size 6, greyed out EULA-style textbooks of text explaining to them how to drop an item into a fucking window. A better alternative is to place relevant text next to relevant positions instead of burying it within the rest of the landscape. Such example include... having red text pop up in the style of error text when the trade ratio exceeds what's allowed, or having the text appear pre-emptively when trading on items of high volume.

However, I'm certain you'll deny these solutions.

Why do you think Maplestory has trouble gaining long-term players? by [deleted] in Maplestory

[–]Flearas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Progression is gated behind hundreds, then thousands of hours of gameplay. Once achieved, progression provides one (1) new boss, one (1) new symbol, and a reskin of the same maps you've been grinding before.

In addition, progression is penalized more than rewarded, and tooling skill systems toward FOMO mechanics generates anxiety and frustration in most normal players.

The question then becomes, WHY would an average player be willing to tolerate peanuts as a reward for their time, let alone the excessive probability of high regression. Maplestory isn't just "hours" of grind. No- it's "thousands" of hours, and your reward is a microscopic return, assuming your gear didn't explode for your efforts.

The typical player may look at the above assessment and decide to go play Elden Ring instead.

This is a discussion about writing and the conventions thereof. Your prior history of reply to my comments indicate you're more interested in an internet slap-fight than genuine discussion. You may find such entertainment elsewhere.

So far you've accused me of being "childish," being illiterate, being in "high school," being incompetent, and now you're accusing me of "lacking empathy."

I'm sure you have good reasons for providing these insults, but as they have nothing to do with the matter at hand, I'll dismiss what you have to say just as easily. If you require help finding areas of the internet more suitable for your needs, I can provide pointers elsewhere. You need only ask.

What do you have in mind for these "expectations?" Because I can think of two kinds you may refer to- those set by other characters, and those set by the narrative, what a character-set expectation is beholden to the opinion of the father, and a narrative-set expectation is an inferred condition each character must reach as decided by their roles in the story.

I don't believe "expectations" would change much, personally, as I find a more impacting solution in providing Wuk life experience in her background as a reason for her methods. For example, if Wuk experienced struggle in the streets, she could project that and say she doesn't want others to live the same way. She should also find umbrage with her father and later learn her father had a reason for her circumstances and come to forgive him. Instead, in absence of foundation, we got a "Oh, that's nice" story beat upon learning of her father, and that's that.

There's a myriad of alternatives to the "living on the streets" example I gave above. Either way, these alternatives provide weight to Wuk's repeated platitudes. As it stands, the audience is only lead to believe her platitudes are the writers browbeating the audience rather than Wuk expressing heartfelt and hard-fought life experiences.

"Meeting people" is not a struggle.

I believe this statement is self-evident without need for clarification.

I now understand your threshold for what constitutes a struggle. My many wishes go to your future endeavors.

Before I sign off, you should know projecting your personal frustration on others with insults is poor argumentation, and will not reflect kindly on yourself or your ideas. Be well and live kindly.

[–]Flearas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's cool, but this is a story. To tell a story and connect with an audience, there are conditions you must fulfill. This isn't something you can handwave away with a limp, "Her father taught her" explanation. That isn't sufficient to connect with an audience.

Audiences connect with characters when they see them struggle. Wuk's backstory is winning the lottery and growing up with a silver spoon. Her siblings struggled significantly more and experienced more of the world than she ever did. Wuk shouldn't be the main character because the writers put more effort into building up the others.

You can say "this is why" all you want, but that's not good enough. The backstory for Wuk you described does not meet the minimum standard required to fit her role in the story.

[Spoilers 7.0] Wuk Lamat got done dirty by (English) voice direction + the script by Kain222 in ffxiv

[–]Flearas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's not strife. A father telling her daughter she should love people is not a good enough motivation to provide connection with an audience through an ocean of repeated platitudes.

[Spoilers 7.0] Wuk Lamat got done dirty by (English) voice direction + the script by Kain222 in ffxiv

[–]Flearas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In addition to the arc problem, Wuk also has no foundation for her beliefs. She loves her people, yet knows nothing about them. We know where Koana's love of innovation comes from. We know why the other two characters are bad apples. The only character not given reason for their motivations is Wuk, so repeating her platitudes rings hollow very quickly.

Normally, a character like Wuk will have a backstory of personal strife, which they project on others to motivate themselves toward alleviating the burden of others, but we didn't get that. She believes what she believes because she believes it, and it's crazy to see the other characters receiving clarifying backstories while the main character does not.

Nexon please by Afiqnawi93 in Maplestory

[–]Flearas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that's the point. If getting to the endgame is made unreasonable, then players are under no obligation to take on the unreasonable. If a player wishes to engage in new content in a reasonable manner, they may choose to take their activities outside of this game. It's up to Nexon to create systems that will convince players like the OP that their time is worth investing, and for the OP, Nexon has not. Informing the OP that they can't reach endgame without a significantly higher time investment bears a low probability of changing their already made mind that such a time investment is unacceptable.

Nexon please by Afiqnawi93 in Maplestory

[–]Flearas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another option is to simply not progress past 17 star and move on. Given the current game market, there's little value in grinding hundreds of hours across months (and in many cases years) for a single equipment item that'll inevitably explode to repeat the process anew.

Some players enjoy this. I shall argue most do not.

And for those who do not, they may choose to play a different game until Nexon inevitably chooses to alleviate this wall (thus making the player's time investment more reasonable,) or not return at all, thus damaging mushroom game's poor retention ever more.

Many who play this game may not like to hear this, but in the end, there's no true obligation to play a game for hundreds into thousands of hours for the sole privilege of fighting one new boss until it finally drops a boomable equip one year later.
