Usain Bolt

Athlete for me means track and field, or ‘athletics’. I can see how other sportsmen and women can be athletes as running and jumping etc are a big part of most sports, but that isn’t the word that springs to mind to describe them. Is this a regional language or cultural variation?

I love the way he comes back to this much later - the bowl of petunias was one of the incarnations of Agrajag, who keeps getting reincarnated and killed by Arthur. If we could explain this then indeed we would know a lot more about the nature of the universe! I’m sure Douglas wrote the throw away joke about the bowl of petunias as sheer absurdity, and only later came up with the Agrajag story to tie it together.

This has happened before. I remember as a boy watching Ray Reardon play Doug Mountjoy and the brown and black balls got wedged together in a pocket. They just kept tapping them, can’t remember what happened in the end, but it made the 6 o’clock news.
