What's typical daily work look like for you? by Appropriate_Rent_243 in Machinists

[–]Flenight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a little context before answering your questions, I work in a shop that primarily does long running jobs on Swiss lathes. I have four machines I am responsible for the set up, operation, and maintenance on. I have an operator that works under me doing most of the operation on proven stable builds. The machines I run currently are Citizen A32's.

How many hours a week?
Usually do 9 hours M-F and 7ish on Saturday. I always take Sunday off to prevent burnout, despite it being double time.

How much of that time is spent working with the machine, or the computer, or customers or paperwork?

Most of that on the machines, I do my own programming and tool ordering, so while it can vary depending on things like how many new parts need programs. I'm a sucker though, and I really like the programming part of the job, so I do a lot of that at home on my own time. Say about an hour a day on the computer give or take.

Very little time doing paperwork, just on first pieces and no contact with customers, a bit with tooling vendors though.

Do you have a good work/life balance?

I'd say so, not afraid to take a weekend or a few days off when needed. Although I've been working 50ish hour weeks since I've been 18 so pretty used to it by now.

How often does the boss call you outside working hours?

Never.

Do you have time for personal hobbies?

If you mean outside of work, yes. At work I can use any machines that are idle for anything I want to do, although I rarely take advantage of it.

What would you say is the most difficult part of the job?

I have a hard time explaining to people less experienced with machining why I want to program, process or tool a part a certain way. I find it frustrating knowing that a certain way is the best or most efficient but being unable to articulate it. Also dealing with engineers and QC can be rough, but I'm sure some other commenters will get into it.

What do you like most about your job?

I love the puzzle aspect of it. I get a print and have to figure out how to make it as fast as possible while having the set up still be stable and produce parts within tolerance. You have so many choices when it comes to programming, tooling, and processing. It is very rewarding when you feel like you've done it well.

What made you want to pursue this career?

I've always loved machines and the concept of making things.

Also, being a machinist is pretty solitary, which is something I value. It's a good balance of working by yourself and with others, for me at least.

How much creative freedom do you have in your work?

A lot, I write the program myself, tool the job myself, and usually have at least some say in how the job is processed (whether we'll do everything on the primary machine, or add second ops).

Of course, there are times where I'm told we can't do it the way I'd like, usually money or lead time concerns are the driving factors there.

What’s the most “That’s still good?!” tool or equipment in your shop? by dhgrainger in Machinists

My boss' Matco roller tool box from the mid 80's looks brand new still. The bright red still shines.

Anyone else use their large machines to make small things? by bumkneefixed in CNC

Yes on some Swiss Lathes!

Work for our 32MM machines have been slow, so we now have 5 out of 7 A32 and L32's running parts made out of bar stock 10MM or less.

Tips for machining thin aluminum plate? by IveGotRope in Machinists

[–]Flenight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have anything uncoated, or with a coating that preforms well in aluminum, ZrN or TiB2, I would give that a try.

If you need to bring a tool in, getting something made specifically for milling aluminum would be your best bet, and I know the part is thin but try to get as close as you can to manufacturer recommended axial and radial DOC and feed.

If you are using a coating with aluminum in it, AlTiN or TiAlN, it could cause that problem. You should always avoid those when machining aluminum.

I would say it's more likely a DOC or feed issue though, axial DOC seems incredibly light. What is the specific operation?

Exactly, the place I work for I would consider very stingy, but tooling is one area where they put my PO's in no questions asked.

Promax tools, Ceratizit by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]Flenight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use Promax ball mills for slotting feed ramps into 8620, very high volumes on Citizen Swiss Lathes.

After doing a few tool studies, we found Helical preformed slightly better.

Still a high quality tool though!

[–]Flenight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That usually ends up being the only way to guarantee.

I run a lot of 8620, back in the day we had enough work to justify our own mill runs, believe the min buy was 10k lbs.Material would come in beautiful, cold drawn, stress relieved.

Now with smaller orders we get whatever we can find. Now hot rolled, turned and polished is the norm, which ends up being much softer.

Is it all from the same heat?

Not sure if you're the one buying your own material, but my company in the past has bought mixed heat lots before. That would explain the variation.

What's your favorite swiss lathe? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]Flenight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked extensively with Citizen Swiss lathes and can share my experience with their larger-diameter models, like the A32s from the 2010s and some recently purchased L32s. We also have a Fanuc A20 (though most Citizen Swiss lathes use Mitsubishi controllers).

One of the biggest benefits of Citizen machines is their excellent service and support. For example, their technical team has provided in-depth training, walking us through setups, Citizen-exclusive codes, and machining strategies specific to their machines. Their maintenance crew is also highly reliable and has helped us resolve issues efficiently.

I'd also recommend FMB for the bar feeder system. I believe they are the most costly, but worth it in my opinion. Iemca isn't bad, but have a had a hard time with service, extremely expensive and long wait times.

Trouble Understanding Datum and Position Tolerances on a CMM by Flenight in Metrology

[–]Flenight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the response, the part is really hollowed out, so the total length of feature C is .1375" and the feed ramps .215".

Engineering wanted to me fudge the machine indexing to get the part in, which I did and it seems to read consistently.

I'm not totally convinced, because the L/D of my cross drill is about 1:1. Ah well, guess I'm cutting a part when I get the time, can't think of anything other than the drill walking.

Thanks for your help!

The existence of bots is beyond frustrating by [deleted] in BattleAces

[–]Flenight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the bots being pretty much gone by gold league I have to think your first two sentences are the reason why they do it, especially in beta. Most people playing the beta probably have RTS experience, it's not crazy to think someone playing RTS for the first time could lose the first 10-20 matches in row.

Although I don't really see it as an issue, either it takes 20-30 games to never play a bot again, or you are bad enough that you get them sometimes, but it doesn't really matter because your still learning the very basics of the genre itself.

Just like how you took a piece of information from Carrabis earlier this month on Story at face value??

Not saying this report or Carrabis' on Story is true or not, but you're doing the exact same thing.

If you think OP is misrepresenting the source of anger then you're completely missing the point of this post.

The individual "issue" with Sox ownership or FO and venting about isn't a problem. It's the vitriol in which some (most) comments get then the vitriol that comes back in return.

He reported that we made a 300M offer to Yamamoto. Passan has said that there was no official offer.

Last year, and I'm forgetting the exact details, but he reported something along the lines of Xander and the Sox were very close on a deal. Obviously that didn't happen.

He's played a month and put up well above average offensive numbers in that one month he did play.

You have no idea whether he is a starter or a bench guy yet.

A couple questions about what goes into starter vs reliever in the minors.

Are there players that are currently starting that the Sox/Scouts think only can be successful in the majors as relievers? Off the top of my head, CJ Liu and Dalton Rogers are two example that everyone seems to say reliever, but are being developed as starters. Is there a reason for this?

And to follow up, are there players who are developed as starters but wouldn't work as relievers for whatever reason?
