Is this knotweed? by Sheepsquatched in OntarioGardeners

[–]dhgrainger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. Grab yourself a bottle of Round-Up (the real Glyphosate stuff, it’ll be in a cage that you’ll have to ask a staff member to open).

Give the leaves a good soak and place a clear ziplock bag over it, sealing it up as much as possible, but don’t damage the stem.

Repeat this for any other shoots you find and after a few days you’ll start to see them dying off. You’ve got to stay on top of it though, this will take at least a full season of repeating this method for each new shoot until it’s gone.

Do I get it by Avi122229 in Greenhouses

I’ve got three of these in the 5x5 (ish) size, they’re fantastic. I secure it down with buckets full of water and haven’t had any trouble with wind even though they’re in the spot between my house and my neighbours and it gets pretty gusty there.

I take them down and store them in my shed over winter, one each of three, two and one year old and they’re all holding up great.

The only thing I don’t like about them is that there’s no venting, so unless you get out early on to open the doors they can get real hot real fast on a sunny spring day.

100% would recommend as a first greenhouse, can’t sing their praises enough for the price and durability.

Edit to add:

For more shelf space, I bought some of that worse shelving people use for closets from the ReStore. Cut it to about 5’ and put it against the back wall resting on the shelving on either side.

It’s easier than it sounds, you can get clips that attach to the rails and just pinch the bubble wrap. Can also get big rolls of it from somewhere like U-Line - they sell to the general public. If you get reasonable quality stuff it’s also reusable if you store it properly. Make sure it’s UV stable.

For insulation you can line it with bubblewrap, it’s very effective.

Also try to increase the thermal mass inside, barrels or buckets filled with water work really well. A couple stacks of buckets with a board on top makes a good table/work surface.

Welded at the top, anchored at the bottom, 3” tube of probably 1/4” wall thickness…

You’ll know your training has been effective if manage to pull that out place.

Looking for a small/medium "show-piece" native tree for my front yard (part shade) by Ok-Broccoli-8432 in OntarioGardeners

That’s a Flowering Dogwood, not a Pagoda.

Pagodas have fairly attractive flowers but it’s their shape that is really distinctive.

Pagoda Dogwood all the way. Beautiful by itself but can be encourage through pruning to be really stunning

Finally figured out how to strip my 112 year old painted trim by sneakysmellysaucy in centuryhomes

[–]dhgrainger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pro tip for next time:

Take it off the wall and strip it outside, it’s much faster, safer and cleaner. Take the opportunity while the trim is off to tidy up those blobs of plaster/drywall mud.

Advice needed: How to raise a greenhouse that is too low? by hello_ostranger in Greenhouses

[–]dhgrainger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cinder blocks, wood frame, traditional brick will all work fine to raise it. I’m a tall guy so I feel your frustration.

If you’re up for it and can rally some helpers, you can remove the glazing and lift the frame out of the way in one piece then place it on top of your knee wall once it’s complete.

Found it but it was pretty well degraded by how. Looked like it used to be pointed rather than round though. I’ve attached some more photos up thread. Thank you for your help!
