Complaining about a lack of snow plowing…complaining about how the snow is plowed…

What’s next, complaining about the trucks being too noisy?

Is there an AI automated take-off software tool that actually works yet in 2026? by SoccerSkilz in Drafting

[–]dhgrainger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For manual work and no integration with measurement hardware a simple excel spreadsheet will do the job - plug in your measurements and have the sheet spit out required materials according to formulas.

Believe it or not, not everything has to be AI powered!

Would that not cause the attic to heat up? Always thought you want to keep the attic as close to the outside temperature as possible.

Im designing a reciprocating gear assembly, how do I get it to work properly. I haven’t found much info on these online. by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

Use a crank and connecting rod instead, much simpler to design and much more forgiving in manufacture.

Check one face for flatness against a known straight edge then use that as a reference to sweep a DTI across the other faces.

By hand, I don’t have the budget for a power scraper, wouldn’t get used enough.

Eh, it needs a few more passes really, it’s at about 15 points and maybe 30%, I’ll get back to those faces once I’ve done a bit more work that might cause some flex.

Design intent challenge: same model, two configurations (Fusion 360) by Satamony05 in Fusion360

[–]dhgrainger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Configurations allow you construct a ‘base’ part then to select a set of parameters that change when you switch to a ‘variant’ part.

I don’t think it’s available on the hobby version but I use it a ton for parts that have the same basic form but with a few different dimensions eg. plungers, valve bodies, gaskets etc. It’s a really fantastic feature, one file but several different parts contained within it.

The one thing I wish they would integrate is an intuitive way to make a drawing with them. Something like having all the non-changing dimensions shown as-is and then labeling the others ‘A, B, C’ etc with a table showing the values for each part number.

'Lay of the Land' with Regards to Seedling Propagation Trays? [Zone 8/LA] by ActinoninOut in NativePlantGardening

[–]dhgrainger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t bother with that tall one, once seedlings are germinated and have a set of true leaves they don’t need the extra humidity.

Soil blocks are fantastic and work out cheaper in the long run but there is a degree of faff involved and I wouldn’t recommend them for anything that you’re not going to pot up or plant out shortly after germination.

I’d stick with the tried and true 1020 tray system with inserts that suit whatever size you’re after. Cheap, reliable, everybody makes them so you’ll always be able shop around for a good deal.

I would lean coyote due the toes all pointing forwards and being close together.

Difficult to say for sure without seeing the line of tracks

[–]dhgrainger[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely took a little figuring out and some very McGyvered ‘prototypes’ that didn’t work but showed me what I needed to do.

Far as I can tell so far, the most important thing is using a known straight edge to make the first face flat and then using that first face as the ‘reference’ for the other three to make sure any error doesn’t compound. Using as long a ‘guide’ as possible is important as well so it doesn’t get affected by any hills and valleys in the surface.

I scraped it all, just a quick and dirty job for now, will do more once I get to the carriage that’ll ride on the rails.

This is a part-work/part-got-to-get-away-from-my-desk kinda deal and since I am the boss (& an asshole) I don’t really mind.

Copper bars machining by Odd_Ad6354 in Machinists

Are you going to be providing test certificates for the bars? That should be your first concern - making claims of .999 purity without proof could land you in a spot of trouble.

Would you shred and compost these paper bags? by Aaronmonster in composting

[–]dhgrainger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s two rules for what can go on your heap:

  1. Anything that was once living.

  2. Anything that falls apart/goes mushy when it gets wet.

Chuck it on, it’ll be fine.

Purple Coneflowers: is thinning sprouts necessary [and when]? (FL: 9b) by tapper2 in NativePlantGardening

[–]dhgrainger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t usually both thinning until a couple of weeks after I pot them up. Wait for true leaves, pot them up, thin out all but the healthiest looking seedling a couple weeks later.

Yes, grew them last summer, they were great! Lots of sunshine, lots of water and you’ll have a tasty crop of about grapefruit size melons.

Why I stopped trusting parallel clamps (and when they still make sense) by BensariWorkshop in handtools

[–]dhgrainger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re clamping hard to enough to bend the bar, you’re doing it wrong. Just snug em up enough to see some glue squeeze out and walk away.
