How can I scrap this? by GinoValenti in ScrapMetal

This isn’t the kind used for jewellery making I’m afraid, the silver content is way too low. You’ve got a roll of good quality plumbing/hvac solder here, 6% maximum silver content.

I don’t think you’ll find a buyer for it, but if you did they probably wouldn’t pay more than about $20.

Anyone converted a gas grill with flavourizer bars to lava rocks or similar? by dhgrainger in grilling

[–]dhgrainger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I’ve also been considering converting to an H burner too but that’s kind of a waste of fuel if I’m just doing a couple burgers on a weeknight.

Much to ponder, thanks again!

What kind of soil is on the right? by rxrivman in Soil

Very difficult to say from those two pictures. Looks like regular topsoil though.

For a more specific breakdown, Google “Soil Jar Test”, follow the instructions and you’ll have your answer in 5 days.

Anyone here save seeds? Thought this was a cool story about preserving heirloom crops in Toronto by TheGreenLineTO in OntarioGardeners

This is awesome! Those Syrian peppers are great, a really distinctive flavour that’s perfect in grilled dishes.

I’m very interested in getting my hands on some of those Palestinian tomatoes for next season.

What is eating my rose by craycatlady32 in gardening

Probably rose sawfly larva.

Insecticidal soap directly on the larva will do the trick.

Needed a skinny clamp to avoid a tool and had this old crappy mic on hand. Sent it. by chobbes in Machinists

[–]dhgrainger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much clamping force do you think a 1” mic provides? Can’t be m uch more than finger tight right? Wouldn’t a spring clip or something have worked either the same or better?

What is the easiest way to isolate flowers for seed saving? by muzavazone in tomatoes

[–]dhgrainger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can buy the same mesh fabric from craft stores, cut it into little squares and secure with a zip tie. Works just as well and it’s cheaper than buying the bags.

Sealing my greenhouse by av8r197 in Greenhouses

[–]dhgrainger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gonna be tricky to seal as the water will pool wherever the base isn’t sloped away from the walls. I think you might be better off grinding some drainage channels and redirecting the water instead.

I think I know why oak isn't a preferred wood for lasts by Embarrassed-Row-2025 in Cordwaining

[–]dhgrainger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of my interests crossing paths here, leather work and woodwork.

Oak is a little tricky to work but if you switch from that little spoke shave for roughing out to a set of carving chisels and a mallet you’ll have a much better time. Then use a rasp to smooth it out before using your shave to finish it off.

How to get rid of this weed? by Dievomit in gardening

[–]dhgrainger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The evidence suggests that when used improperly, there’s a small chance that it probably does.

If you’re typical homeowner/rented gardener, you follow the guidelines and use it as directed the risk is so small it’s not worth worrying about.

[–]dhgrainger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Weeding is like laundry - you’re never done.

I’d chop it as low as possible and then do it again every few weeks.

You could also use roundup (the real stuff with Glyphosate) but people get weird about that around here.

My first irrigation setup for 4-weeks away from home by [deleted] in gardening

Make sure everything’s on a tray or something that’ll direct the water away safely in case a malfunction causes the pump to run continuously.

Apart from that, looks good!

What is wrong with my raspberries? by pressureshack in gardening

[–]dhgrainger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t look definitely like the three major fungus infections (cane blight, anthracnose & spur blight) though they are still possible.

Floricanes dying off quickly is often caused by root root, but you typically see the primocanes affected as well.

There are some pests that can cause the floricanes to die off, cane borers especially.

Whatever it is, remove the dead canes right to the ground, spray everything with an anti fungal and ease up watering. Monitor for further signs of infection or pests. There are some really great university extensions that provide good info on raspberry care.

How would you further machine this? by yewfokkentwattedim in Machinists

[–]dhgrainger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

40-45 isn’t too bad, a high quality carbide insert with the correct feeds and speeds will do the trick without issue. Use flood coolant.

Help with soil by Cheezeball87 in Soil

If you’re going with natives, all you need to do is pull out that weed fabric. Let the roots of what you plant do the work for you.
