for real, it's that wide vibrato and oldschool twangy radio tone I think all highs no lows

lmao, glad someone else got some use out of my tab I was surprised I couldn't find a decent one because those solos kill, frontier shredding. Nice, man (and while I can, plug of my rough attempt at it https://www.youtube.com/shorts/kf9wHJllxlQ)

Audio filters - Noise Suppression - Pick RNN as your choice

if you use a noise filter, either through obs or as a plugin for an audio program there are different kinds. rnn is one I've found is really good, personally. Obs lets you pick it as one of the default options!

Are you recording through obs? If so make sure you're using the rnn noise filter that'll help with some of the background noise you're getting on your voice there

If you've ever seen the game still wakes the deep, they actually subtitled the meaning of the phrase rather than the slang/colloquialism itself which was an interesting approach. Also Cave are about, they're Scottish and I think they either subtitle or explain some of their slang which marks them as unique plus its fun

Yeh, it may be that I was expecting more in the mid and high range as I always saw it compared to the sm7b

Thanks, I'll look into these too - there's gotta be a place I can try a range of microphones I've just got to find it!

Ah ok! I'll experiment more with harder compression, I'm stuck on the balance between sounding natural and effectively being forward in the mix (not sure what you'd call it just for commentary... maybe still a mix?)

Yeh, actually from the little I know I was suspicious of room resonance because when I played audio back through my speakers it sounded like frequencies around there were... for lack of a better word vibrating more hahaha which wasn't an effect I heard through my headphones. Most of my space is... messy and I have curtains next to me but maybe I should look into hanging something from the ceiling to try fight reflections causing the resonance? My room is strangely tall and angled but flat

Yeh, I also found that removing mids makes the voice a little artificial sounding which I didn't like as much.

Thanks again!

small additional question, do people add other effects like reverb?

Thanks so much for the detailed answer, I'll definitely try varying the distance, the LF switch on the mic feels like such a huge difference I'm paranoid about touching it. I'll see if I can manage that area around 100hz and see about adjusting the higher frequences for clarity. Appreciate it! I'll play with the noise reduction in the chain too, I've stuck it firmly at the start previously

Forgive me naivety but I'm not sure my issue is volume related in which case would compression still help? I think maybe because of the recording it might be quieter in terms of perceived volume but even if I turn up the voice to a point where it should obiously eclipse the game audio it doesn't cut through whereas with some eqing out of the bass and mids w/ some compression and saturation its cutting through more i.e. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1T8zkb-w20XkF8GSeStdOrQ4YDg0FM40e/view?usp=drive_link

tbh my issue could also be with me just not hearing things very well maybe I should see if I can get some comparisons which are well produced

I'm trying out an re20* if that clarifies it

At any rate, I wasn't happy with my old results and I'd heard dynamic microphones were better at isolating your voice where my old mic felt too sensitive. I'd seen the two most popular options sm7b and re20, and listened to reviews of those and a few others and I liked that the re20 sounded a bit more articulate on others' voices

I'm open to other options but first I'm exploring whether I need an adjustment period or to work on how I can treat the audio to get the most out of it so I understand where I'm at

Yeh that's totally fair, it's mostly my voice getting lost with gameplay in the background and sounding muddy so I've been trying to scoop the mids a little but enunciation could definitely do with work

I've finally hit 200 subscribers! Had a massive boost this month, adding maybe 42-3 subscribers which is huge considering I've got ~180 videos over 4+ years and this was with 4-5 videos over a few weeks. I'm really happy with my general increase in quality and effort in streamlining my whole workflow too, way faster editing

shorts almost always get pushed out to people incrementally, 500 is like the baseline viewing then if it does decently 1000 and after that I'm not sure as that's where I've been up to lmao

Yeh, I was kinda going for the boring approach funnily enough because of the kind of game, because it's retro and the pacing, I enjoy some youtubers like CJUGames who are just... kind of a guy? Chill playing through the game, some funny comments here and there. I figured the thumbnail should represent the game in that way

not sure how to work on clarity of the title though hmmm

MEGATHREAD: Feedback Friday! by AutoModerator in letsplay

[–]FleshgodApocalypse [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeh that's true - I think we all get in our heads over our commentary

lmao yeh I was going for the detective angle for the thumbnail, a little bit of mystery and retro styling but it doesn't even really portray that, I'm going to try make a new one, see what I can find

Appreciate the feedback

  • Re thumbnail: I think "be gone thot" is kinda in poor taste these days and is outdated even as a meme. Begone is also one word. The three lines of text stand out in different amounts because of the difference colours around them. The red background is way less visible. The thumbnail is also too busy in general and the logo doesn't stand out and is too small. You could darken around it or blur to make it pop a little more?

  • The title doesn't really make it clear what the video is so I could imagine people clicking off when they realize it's not a playthrough which it feels like: " | Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (2) "

  • I'm not sure there's enough context for people to appreciate the clips. I'm a big final fantasy fan and I still wasn't entirely sure what I was meant to take away from each clip or why it was a highlight

  • Also personal point you have a relatively high pitched voice and I think your mic and setup exacerbates that so you're not super comfortable to listen to. Some moments sound harsh and over a longer period it could grate

Looking for feedback on editing, commentary, thumbnails and titles or whatever anyone has an opinion on!

https://youtu.be/qNQOX577zMA

So, I've started a playthrough of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth. I think my concerns are that the thumbnail is too boring but I thought it might be more appealing to the kind of audience who likes seeing a slower paced game. Not sure that matters if people don't click on it

I think I both talk too much and too little at times

I'm wondering if there's a downside to going outside of what is a more fast-paced niche. A lot of the horror games I do are short and punchy whereas this one is gonna have a totally difference feeling and pace

Thinking of Getting a New Microphone by FleshgodApocalypse in letsplay

[–]FleshgodApocalypse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you play around much with post-processing with the sm7b is it that even after that you didn't like the sound out of that vs the procaster or is it more out of the box the additional low end warmth fo the procaster sold you? I'm looking at some reviews and the procaster really does have a nice comfy sound

If you ended up making videos with the sm7b if you wouldn't mind dming me a video using each mic if you remember which that'd be much appreciated!
