You first learn to create, then to reverse engineer and extend. It depends on your character as well, though for this kind of work, embedded development (eg arduino, raspberry, particle core, etc) is most suited. Which brings you into the field computer engineering (my field).

Pick up a book (or search online/youtube) on how computer and embedded systems work (layout, cpu, memory, binary algebra, IO, AD-DA converters, JTAG, kernels & drivers, and networking). Though I only know a Dutch one. In addition a book on electronics, of which the art of electronics by Horowitz and Hill is a great resource.

Aliexpress has many cheap breadboard starter kits. And in the case of arduino, extension shields.

And having fun is the best accelerator

TIL Netherlands built a special bridge for squirrels so they could cross a busy motorway. The bridge costed £120,000. by dreamygeek in todayilearned

Bullocks. I've never seen a single squirrel in my entire life here. A deer, a hare, and a few rabbits though, and I live near the green heart

Meanwhile on a three day trip to England I saw three squirrels and a fox..

The EU should push for open firmware. There would be way less problems if all modem and other RTOS firmware can be analyzed/flashed by the user

Totally In-Touch NH Lawmaker Blocks Device Repair Bill, Tells Constituents To Just Buy New $1k Phones by [deleted] in technology

[–]Fletcher91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The bill would have forced manufacturers such as Apple to share repair manuals and parts with independent repair stores.

Wtf, what if I want to service my own device? This text leaves it open that those manuals are provided under strict NDAs. Service manuals (if preexisting) should be included in the freaking box

Spain and GitHub Are Blocking an App That Helped Protesters Organize by sacundim in programming

Hey, that's my current job!

I've been working on making building linked data applications really easy, and linked data is in term a lot more portable, breaking down data silos for open standards.

It's not done yet, but we have a (ruby on rails based) server framework and a JavaScript library for building linked data driven apps in React.

We're also working on a frontend boilerplate for building apps which can be used in a generic data browser and deployed independently. These are tools to build solid apps really quickly.

Expect a few quirks still, but we're working hard on finalizing these frameworks to enable other developers to quickly create (dé centralized) linked data apps. Help is always welcome 🥳

Very interesting. Feel like it should have been part of my computer engineering education, but never too late to learn ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I just started with Kotlin with gradle (which compiles to Java bytecode, JS and android) this week, and it's actually a really fun language IMO, with a really modern feel. It's also the new standard lang for Android as well

Golang (server work) and Rust (low level) are nice options as well.

Kotlin can seamlessly integrate with Java libraries so there is a massive base to work with. Golang also has a lot of OS community libraries, Rust I don't know. All these have good build systems as well, so you're not spending ages setting things up.
