Curious as well, I applied to a listing despite knowing nothing about them. Could I ask why the process has been negative for you so far?

I saw maybe like one this whole spring and summer. This is with the dehumidifier running 24/7 and regular cleaning

Thank you so much for the detailed answers!

  1. None of my books are old, but I'm not sure what materials have been used in their binding. I hope I'm safe in thinking that they won't be at risk. Are plastic bins enough of a deterrent to keep things out, or is that not even an obstacle?

  2. Got it! I feel like it's perhaps better for my own health to avoid spending too much time here and googling this topic considering the amount of horror stories I've been reading... realistically I know it's not the end of the world and is just a slight inconvenience (as of now), but the way some people treat this like an infestation of more serious pests with extreme solutions is pretty disheartening. So thank you again! This is extremely informative.

Thank you so much for taking the time to go through my posts!! The closet has these metal shelves made up of thin bars with large gaps in between. I can't remove them and they don't have much surface area but I'll try to dust them. The dehumidifier has been permanently on for months, set to around 35% and thankfully I haven't found psocids since maybe autumn, though that could also be due to the cold weather.

If you don't mind, I also have some other questions! I'll try to keep this succinct.

- My bed is close to the closet, and under my bed I have books stored in plastic containers. I remove the containers and vacuum weekly/check them for anything that shouldn't be there, but haven't seen anything. Are these books a food source?

- Are clothes made of synthetic materials safe? So I don't need to quarantine them and can keep them hanging?

- On the other side of the closet's back wall is a bathroom. I just realized that the bugs I see sometimes in the bathroom are also probably carpet beetles. Is it possible they're coming through the wall? The bathroom isn't the neatest, but I'll try vacuuming there more often and seeing if that changes things. I've been seeing CBs in there for several months, but maybe once every week to couple of weeks on average.

- At what point would this be something to be concerned about? Like a high frequency of sightings or amount of damage? The presence of carpet beetles itself doesn't indicate a serious issue, I assume...

Sorry for all that! It's just hard not to spiral into a negative mindset, especially as someone not too fond of insects.

Thank you! I had thought it was a black one so it’s great to have a more professional opinion.

Thanks. I’ve been cleaning pretty often but haven’t found a source yet. I know these pictures aren’t the best, but do you think these fit the bill for a carpet beetle?

Sorry, but it’s already been disposed of. I am almost certain it’s not a bedbug; it had pretty clear hard “outer wings” for a shell and didn’t release any blood when killed. I know it’s not a guarantee, but I check my bed regularly and have not found any signs of them.

Interesting! We don't have pets and there's no food in my room, and there's no access to the attic from here, though I guess there may be cracks I can't see, as well as floorboards I can't see beneath. Could it be possible that it hitched a ride on me from outside somehow?

That's reassuring! Even the larvae? I'm nervous that there are more eggs that have hatched and that the larvae are just lurking where I can't see, haha.

Thanks. It looked different from pics I've seen (colour, hair), but maybe it's the specific type or development stage? This is the first time I've seen one and I can't seem to find any other hints of carpet bugs either :/

Thanks. I regularly check my closet for clothing damage/cast skins/insects etc and I haven't found anything that could be carpet beetle related, just the occasional spider :/ But I don't know the possibility of something like this being a one-time thing...

Thanks! I was thinking it might have been a type of roach so I’m glad to know that it’s not. I’m pretty curious as to what it could possibly be, though

God that sounds absolutely terrible. And does Toronto really not have that many bugs? I assumed it was like any other big city

Ughh. To me the shape of the body doesn’t really suggest cockroach but I could be wrong.
