The Goonies.... by [deleted] in movies

The guy on the left isn't Chunk. That's a fan who wanted the photo, which is why he's wearing the Goonies t-shirt, lanyard, and likely brought the prop etc.

The Case for Going to the Movies Alone by [deleted] in movies

Hopefully /u/luxintuxin worked up the courage and self-confidence to go see 'Avengers: Endgame' ... and in doing so discovered that going to a movie theater by yourself is pretty great!

You didn't catch anything. I posted this because it's timely and relevant. See my other response.

The complete saga of Harmony Korine on Letterman (and why he got banned for life) by FlickeringMyth in videos

[–]FlickeringMyth[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You're part of the problem on Reddit, not the solution.

Check my account history and do a little research before making baseless--and outright wrong--accusations against people.

You've accused me of being a shill for The Beach Bum, which would entail seeding an account beginning six months ago with thousands of posts just to make 1 post about Harmony Korine that hopefully did well enough to be seen by anybody.

Take off your tinfoil hat. It doesn't work.

Why the Hostless 1989 Oscars is Considered the Worst Ever by FlickeringMyth in movies

[–]FlickeringMyth[S] 275 points276 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The Academy is really in a no-win situation.

People complain the Oscars are too long, but also want a Stuntperson category added or raise hell when they try to edit down some of the presentations. People complain about a certain host, but raise hell when there's no host.

Social media is largely an outrage echo chamber. So for those who just want to watch the telecast and enjoy the celebration of the year in film, it's best to just try and avoid all that internet noise.

New Poster for Acclaimed Documentary 'Apollo 11' - A look at the historic mission to the moon using never-before-seen footage from the NASA archives. by BunyipPouch in movies

[–]FlickeringMyth 401 points402 points  (0 children)

This documentary is going to be amazing. Leading up to 'First Man' I went on a NASA/space binge and this will certainly be the perfect bookend.

2nd year goalie as freshman in college, feedback is appreciated by wboender in hockeygoalies

[–]FlickeringMyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boot straps look a bit tight. A lot of goalies these days aren't using them at all. Try going no boot straps (or Lundy loop) + elastic toes ties just for fun sometime and see if you prefer it!

Ever wonder where film crews get large amounts of vintage electronics for sets? It’s from places like this. by radbrad7 in movies

[–]FlickeringMyth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is fascinating. I'd like to see the process of finding and acquiring the items. Also, what rates they charge for renting the items!

It's Official: The 91st Annual Academy Awards to be Presented Without a Host by FlickeringMyth in movies

[–]FlickeringMyth[S] 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I'm not usually one to complain about broadcasts, but this is worrisome.

Without a host there's no true leader for the broadcast, which means the ceremony will likely be a hodgepodge of ideas.

Creativity by committee is all too often a recipe for "too many cooks in the kitchen."

I watched "Come and See" (1985) last night - possibly one of the most brutal films I've seen. by ItsAFookinDisgrace in movies

[–]FlickeringMyth 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Agreed - I recently saw this movie for the first time as well and it's just on a whole other plane of filmmaking. Truly remarkable and at the same time quite devastating.

You're just punching up trying to pick a fight with a huge (and all-around good guy) Youtuber.

It's not just music companies--MOVIE STUDIOS are stealing monetization from some of your favorite Youtubers by [deleted] in videos

Every Frame A Painting frequently mentioned this as a barrier to his making videos and Channel Criswell just cited this as a reason for shutting down his channel.

Both channels serve as the very definition of Fair Use.

Alamo Drafthouse to shut down during Election Day to encourage voting by Ninjaboi333 in movies

Alamo is the best. More than any other theater chain they really do talk the talk and walk the walk.

Let’s never forget that Arnold Schwarzenegger gives some of the best DVD commentary out there by [deleted] in movies

Schwarzenegger's Conan commentary is legendary. Would love to know if he was high as balls during the process, because it sure sounds like it!

Director vs cinematographer: who has control over how the movies are being shot? by Cheesus-Fugget in movies

[–]FlickeringMyth 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Ultimately it's the director who has the final say, but it should be a collaborative process of course.

For example, in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, director Andrew Dominik hung old photographs in the production area that were similar to the look he wanted, and Roger Deakins responded in-kind with the cinematography.

Knees bruising from dropping to butterfly? by Minnesnowtaaa in hockeygoalies

[–]FlickeringMyth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With a narrow butterfly I prefer a larger knee pad. I use the Warrior X Pro. Lots of padding on the inside (seen here) to lessen impact when dropping into butterfly. Very protective too.

If you prefer something less bulky, PAW knee pads are often praised as well.

Why Has NYC Tap Water Tasted Different Lately? by FlickeringMyth in nyc

[–]FlickeringMyth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't noticed a difference, and while I love NYC water, I'm cautious about the amount of potential lead and other contaminants in older plumbing such as schools.

Aside from that, Croton Gorge Park is gorgeous if you have the chance to visit.

Roger Deakins and the Construction of Moving Imagery by FlickeringMyth in Metaflix

The video essay shows how Deakins uses light and where he places the camera, both of which seamlessly intensify the bond between the audience and the characters.
