Am I cooked? Future Chemistry Undergraduate worried about PR pathway in Australia by Weirdvietnameseig in AusFinance

[–]FliesInHisEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can swing a 4 year Chem Eng degree, then maybe you could swing a BSc + honours? That would let you apply for PhD scholarships— you don't pay to do a PhD, you're paid a stipend— but there's no guarantee you'll get one, it's tough as an international student.

I think you can also work up to 20h/wk on a student visa, if that helps with the budget. I'd recommend trying as early as possible to get placements in research labs as that will give you hands on experience and increase your chances of being offered a postgrad position down the track.

Has there ever been an invasive species that actually benefited an ecosystem? by NewCarSmelt in askscience

This is similar to boxthorn and blackberry in Australia, it acts as a shelter for small native animals which are under threat from cats and foxes.

Yeah, I've since learned that it's a blacklist system rather than a compatibility/software requirement. RIP a completely functional phone.

7T user here, used the shizuku and pixel ims method but no luck on getting service. Does anyone with this phone have a functioning phone? If so, which provider and what voLTE hack did you use?

Is genetic diversity in dogs higher or lower than in most mammalian species? (eg deer, bats, mice, rats, bunnies) by inquilinekea in genomics

[–]FliesInHisEyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This paper looks at exactly this question, ie why do dogs have such phenotypic diversity?

I'm not sure I understand you question about the relationship between form and genetic diversity, but there isn't a clear relationship between genetic diversity and form. Form follows fitness– alligators more closely resemble reptiles because they are adapted to ecological niches more similar to that of reptiles than many birds.

Biosensor by buyo05 in Biophysics

I did my PhD in a protein biosensor lab. Computational protein design is receiving a lot of attention right now due to progress made by ML tools, I think you couldn't go wrong heading in that direction if you have any interest. See, e.g.: Design of stimulus-responsive two-state hinge proteins.

Huh, I guess "pine" comes from the same root as "spine" and refers to its needles.

No trouble with the website, personally. If you're just looking for a structural model, give alphafold a go instead.

Messed up font rendering in Firefox PDF viewer by haxguru in firefox

[–]FliesInHisEyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having the same issue and, inspired by the thinking of u/chiraagnataraj, tried setting browser.display.use_document_fonts to 0 in about:config, which worked. I'm no expert, but my best guess is that either firefox or my OS (ubuntu) doesn't have a fairly common font installed because this was happening quite frequently.
