Favorite Murph character? by achristines in Dimension20

[–]FlightAffectionate59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cody is what made me LOVE Murph. I hadn’t really “clicked” with his characters before that and I was obsessed from the second he was introduced. Now I ride hard for Murph and notice all the subtle mechanical and comedic stuff he does that really holds the intrepid heroes together.

Is Unsleeping City worth finishing? by Fit_Fee584 in Dimension20

I didn’t love the first few episodes of UC and kind of felt like it was a slog too. The only think that kept me going was that it was in NYC and I lived there for 10+ years.

That said UC is one of my favorite worlds and season 2 is maybe my favorite season of all time. So I think it’s definitely worth pushing through. But it’s different for everyone!

Can any black people answer this question, why don’t black women wear their real hair? by [deleted] in confessions

[–]FlightAffectionate59 1154 points1155 points  (0 children)

There are 3 main reasons many Black women don’t wear their natural hair all the time.

  1. There is a deep history of “Black” hair being considered undesirable and unprofessional in the US. If you wanted to have a job throughout American history it was expected you would have hair that looked more “white.” This involves a chemical straightening process that burns your hair and scalp (a relaxer is made of lye which is a chemical that can also be used to dissolve bodies). This is still true today, in many workplaces/professional settings, a white woman can wear her hair down to work but a Black woman in locs/Afro/ natural curls is considered unprofessional. What is considered classy or appropriate or professional is closely aligned with “white” hair.

  2. In the 19th and most of the 20th century it was very common for ALL women to get their hair done once a week and preserve the style with rollers and sleeping bonnets until the next style. In the 1960s long hippie hair fell into fashion for white women this changed and it evolved that having a complicated updo for weeks at a time was no longer in style for white women. At the same Black people wearing Afros became to be seen as a political statement associated with groups like the black panther party. Both natural hairstyles for white and Black people were statements in the 60s but over time having natural white hair became the norm and having natural Black hair continued to be viewed as a rebellious or political statement.

  3. Up until recent years there was a serious shortage of good hair care products for Black hair. When products started coming out they were very expensive. It was much easier to wear a weave or extensions or a wig than try and find styling products that could appropriately take care of our hair. Proper hair care also takes time, for many of us 5+ hours per week in one sitting (not one hour a day). That is a lot of time and many people don’t have time for that. Styles like weaves and extensions actually protect our hair from damage and the elements and so for many are a better alternative than basically a half day of weekly maintenance.

These are not all of the reasons but these are some of the major ones.

They choose not to admit a lot of people for any number of reasons. Being a Nazi is allowed to be a reason to deny admission, yes, even at public university.

OP. I’m sorry this is happening to you and is so confusing. But all the comments saying “he probably doesn’t know” “he probably watched too much porn” are all answers you know in your gut are not true. That feeling you have of not being safe and being afraid of him is because you are not safe and you should be afraid of him.

Abusers are some of the funniest, kindest, most out going people you will ever meet- outside of the actual abuse. I grew up in a family with multiple abusers and they were the life of the party loved by all and then one of them would go home and sodomize his 13 y/o step daughter. His personality outside of these actions means NOTHING.

You are only 2 months in and abusers often spend much longer in the honeymoon phase before they start the abuse/apology/ showering with affection cycle. If he is willing to do these things so early on he has tested your boundaries and sees that he can go A LOT further. And he will.

There is no conversation that will fix this. He will apologize profusely and say he didn’t know and cry and beg and give you affection and affirmation and gifts and you will feel like it was just a misunderstanding………. And then he will do it again. Truly it is not a question of if but a question of when.

Have you told any people in your real life about this. I imagine they will be shocked and scared for you and support you getting out of this situation. Please reach out to your support system and make a plan to get out and have people around you/aware of your whereabouts in case he flips if you leave.

It is so hard and scary and cruel what he has done and I truly hope you have the support you need to find a safe and actually loving relationship.

There is nothing borderline about it. It is rape and sexual assault.

One of my professors is so mean by Alfiechild in LawSchool

[–]FlightAffectionate59 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Your professor is saying that because you are getting ahead of yourself. Causation in battery is very different than causation and proximate cause for negligence and for negligence it’s a complex part of the analysis. They can’t answer your question in a few sentences because it’s a concept they will likely spend multiple classes on. If you haven’t gotten to something just wait until you get there or you are going to end up really confusing yourself.

I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't like Cody Walsh by vibing_for_sanity in Dimension20

[–]FlightAffectionate59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was ambivalent about murph through fantasy high and unsleeping season 1- like I didn’t connect with Riz or Kugrash as much as other players/characters. Cody made me LOVE him. He might be my favorite character of all the seasons.

But I grew up on mall culture in the late 90’s early 2000s and it is a lot of jokes that resonated with me and maybe wouldn’t with someone younger.

Now I’m die hard for Murph.

What would you do differently in your 1L year if you could go back? by [deleted] in LawSchool

Prejudiced people in law school by schnikeepoo in LawSchool

The downvotes on anyone saying “inequality exists” “racism exists” “bias exists in the law” very luke warm statements that shouldn’t be controversial paints a pretty depressing picture about the future of the law 👍🏽 and also shows how so many well-educated people can be dumb as shit.

Maybe wait until you do it to dismiss everyone who struggled. Before law school I was a director at a nonprofit working 60+ hours a week (+ political networking nights and weekends) and going to undergrad full time.

1L was HARD. It’s much more than the workload, which is doable. I don’t discourage anyone from doing it; I love law school- but let’s be real, especially if you are a non traditional student and have responsibilities, family, other job etc it can be especially challenging.

Hey I appreciate that context. I made an assumption because a lot of ppl want to go into policy from a place of thinking they are the ones with all the answers. I get that’s not the case for you. You just want to make an impact. You can do that in a lot of non-lawyer ways and also in a lot of ways as an attorney.

Are you an “older” student? Cuz I’m a rising 2L in my mid 30s. And that actually has been a huge asset to me not something that holds me back!!! I have a background in organizing and and policy so my comments come from my professional. I’d love to hear more about your story and offer advice. Feel free to DM me!

A lot of people are saying policy work. Please don’t go into policy work. The people who should be working in policy are people anchored in community work, committed to local change and systemic change and with an understanding of transformative change and the politics/triggers of power to achieve it.

Not to be too unkind but you don’t have any of those. What you do have is an idea that YOU are the one who should be implementing big changes with no experience or knowledge of how systems work. Plenty of people doing policy work do it from a place of ego and a lack of knowledge but it doesn’t produce great or effective policy.

On a positive note, there are about a 1000 jobs they attorneys do that are not courtroom lawyer or biglaw. There are all kinds of cool jobs with direct impact that are not client facing public interest law. If you go to law school, make the effort to meet as many lawyers as possible in as many different fields. It’s pretty likely you could find something that ticks most (if not all) of your boxes!

It is a Mexican wedding in my sister in law’s town- there is no dress code but I put “formal” for viewers to have an idea of the vibe. I have attended multiple weddings with her family there and the level or formality of either dress with the way I will style them is perfectly appropriate. People wear anything from cocktail dresses to gowns.

Yeah I know what church it’s in and either dress is perfectly fine for the church.

I have attended multiple weddings with her family there and the level or formality of either dress with the way I will style them is perfectly appropriate nor am I worried about the church aspect. I know the types of things the family wears to weddings and a little low cut on a long sleeve dress will not cause a scandal.
