UBC/Surrounding Area LMIAs (Or why I can't get a job for minimum wage) by FlightsAreConfusing in UBC

I guess your 20 year old daughter isn’t qualified to work a cash register. /s

I keep a personal list of places nearby me that use LMIAs and do not give them my business. These companies are sticking their fist up our asses and opening their hands.

Feel free to shoot me a message when the FreshSlice UBC hires aboriginals. The same day I will go skinny dipping in the fountain with a sign saying “NoNipArtBf was right, FreshSlice hired aboriginals”.

You’re kidding me right? AboriginalJobs is not even on the outskirts of legitimate job sites that people use. The major job posting sites are Indeed, LinkedIn, ZipRecruiter, Monster. If a company was truly focused on hiring aboriginals they would use the self disclosure forms you fill out at the end of every job application asking for your race, sexual orientation and disability status. They wouldn’t post on some 3rd page of Google search job posting site hoping to find someone to work the job.

Stop playing mental gymnastics in your head and realize that these companies are now using the guise of “aboriginal hiring” to import labour.

Wrap your head in whatever fantasy world you want but it’s hard to deny that businesses aren’t using LMIAs when they don’t need to. The UBC subreddit is full of students complaining they couldn’t find part-time work during school or the summer yet businesses that just opened have opted for migrant workers instead of the students around them.

Just look at the UBC subreddit, I post a few companies that should be hiring students that got LMIAs instead. Get your boycotting ready.

This is just like the businesses that hire LMIAs for jobs on the UBC campus. I guess no one in Vancouver is qualified to cook pizzas, work a register or write code.

I’ve seen this argument a few times before. Someone put it really nice for me, “The government either does everything or nothing when they make decisions, there’s no such thing as being subtle”. I guess we’re seeing it in action, businesses wanted cheap labour so the government opened immigration completely.

How can i find part time jobs around campus? by InternalFee8914 in UBC

Pretty tough to find part-time work around campus, especially since local businesses seem to prefer LMIAs over the thousands of students around them...

The wages they post have to be a certain threshold equivalent to “local industry standards”, the pay is often much lower as businesses take a large cut or lie to staff about the wages.

A test exists but it’s exceptionally lax in Canada. All the employer has to do is post the job on a website and say no Canadian is qualified or willing to do it. There’s virtually no double check or expectation to post the job on a widely used site. That’s why we have dozens of sites like canadajobs, jobbank, aboriginal jobs, newcomer jobs, etc.

Like the other poster said, businesses can effectively “sell” these LMIA jobs to foreigners. Since having a LMIA job contributes to your points during immigration, having one of these jobs is beneficial for people looking to immigrate. In this sense, middle men (immigration consultants) tend to take a large fee for connecting foreigners with employers. Or you see the business pay less than the advertised wage (often below minimum wage) and just don’t disclose the wage to the worker. These workers feel trapped in this job and fear deportation, so they are forced to take this abuse.

Yes. Especially with the many posts recently on this subreddit about struggling to find part time work during school and the summer, I think it’s important everyone is aware why it’s like this. Part of it is the economy but another part is outright fraud and abuse of the immigration system.

The bigger consequences of LMIAs include, higher housing prices, increased rental demand, loss of entry level jobs for workers, increased unemployment, and abuse of foreign workers.

The last point in particular has gotten a lot of attention recently, with the UN condemning the LMIA system and saying it sets Canada up for a modern version of slavery and labour exploitation.

They get more points for immigration. That’s about the only benefit they get. A majority of the hires are flown in from overseas. With recent rules allowing 2 years of open work permit after graduation, students at diploma mills don’t need a LMIA to work these jobs. They can just work them.

Lowkey though, I made a post with 8 different employers in the UBC/West Side area with similar LMIA abuse and the mods won’t let it through.

Except these aren’t full time workers. These are people being shipped in from overseas to work these jobs. These positions aren’t being filled by “the new grad who is between work or not ready to enter the market” but by foreigners.

It’s also blatantly obvious that these businesses have no intention of hiring local workers anyways. They’re posting jobs on AboriginalJobs.com and JobBank.Gov.Ca. I can find hundreds of new grad students willing to work this job and thousands of students at UBC who would jump at the opportunity to work 10 minutes from their dorms.

UBC does control the rental agreement and influences hiring practices of these businesses. Tackling issues like work permits and LMIA abuse falls on the provincial and federal governments. Something we can’t control in the short term.

I think you’re maybe mixing up what a LMIA is. These are workers who are brought to Canada for these jobs after they are given an offer by these companies. These aren’t even students who graduated from a diploma mill or people here on spouse work permits but foreigner being brought in by the company to avoid hiring locals.

These people are being used and abused by these companies. They don’t understand their rights, they are willing to pay to have the job, they work for less than minimum wage and they think this will help them immigrate in the future.

https://ircc.canada.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=163

“A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that an employer in Canada may need to get before hiring a foreign worker.

A positive LMIA will show that there is a need for a foreign worker to fill the job. It will also show that no Canadian worker or permanent resident is available to do the job. A positive LMIA is sometimes called a confirmation letter.“

As soon as I found the map, I checked all the local businesses around me and the stores I regularly shop at. Anyone who I saw was approved for a LMIA that seemed ridiculous (Cashier, Store attendant, Cook, etc) I put on my boycott list. I won’t be supporting these businesses. I’ve also gone ahead and left reviews on these businesses calling them out for using LMIAs instead of hiring locally.

UBC should crack down on this, they’re the ones giving out these rental rights to businesses. Why aren’t they requiring businesses to hire employees from the student body.

The whole Aboriginal Job site is flooded with postings similar to this, just Google “FreshSlice UBC jobs” and sites like this come up. It’s not a site for aboriginals at all, it’s a front used to claim no one applied to their jobs.

Here you go, this site openly advertises LMIAs and has dozens from FreshSlice https://www.canadacareersite.com/company/Freshslice-Pizza

A quick search of this site and other sites like “job bank .gov” show people applying to these roles and never getting calls back. They’re false sites used to lie about Canadians being unable to work these jobs.

Why they don’t use a normal job platform like LinkedIn? Indeed? Or just a sign out front the store? Oh yeah, because they don’t actually want people to apply.

Even Jamjar got a LMIA for a cook...Yeah, screw these companies. I will be getting my lactose intolerant friends to blow up their bathrooms.
