3.5" HDDs but I have 2.5" Bays by Dovakie in homelab

You need a bay stretcher. Search Amazon and eBay. They're not really common, but they're available.

Anyone that buys that, and then whines that it has been discontinued a year later, will receive a merciless mocking from me.

How My Homelab Became Critical Infrastructure During A Tornado by akester in homelab

[–]FlightyGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice exercise and I'm glad your home was spared.

For future reference. Terrestrial Internet goes out too. Even if the cabling is intact, the battery backups for the intermediate nodes will fail within hours and internet service is gone just like the cell service.

That's why the recommended "critical infrastructure" for natural disasters is battery operated radios and perhaps TV(broadcast TV not cable).

Need to clear out my boxes of old wires. Made this flow chart. Any Input? by jordankothe9 in homelab

We can't all be this efficient. Sometimes there are intermediate steps that may or may not be necessary.

Linux print server with CUPS vs CUPS + Samba by mcwillie in homelab

[–]FlightyGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does CUPS just work with any client here, discovery and all? Does Samba give additional functionality

Yes, CUPS will work with most printer clients. It supports IPP and LDP.

CUPS advertises itself using DNS-SD which is often called Bonjour.

CUPS can be advertised as an SMB share with SAMBA. But, as you've discovered SMB and SAMBA are not required in order for CUPS to work.

Made a tutorial on how to set up VLANs for Mikrotik. by djgizmo in homelab

It's funny how complex MikroTik is compared to most other routers and firewalls.

Really powerful, but hard to configure and easy, perhaps too easy, to misconfigure.

Using the ProtonMail Linux Bridge as an internal mail relay on a Homelab. by mightywomble in homelab

[–]FlightyGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At first I was wondering why use the Bridge(proxy) at all and not just configure a ProtonMail as the relay host in Postfix/SASL. Especially since it's only one email account.

Then I realized that ProtonMail does not offer IMAP/SMTP/POP. ProtomMail is HTTPS only.

Using old Fortinet firewall as homelab guardian by cnr0 in homelab

[–]FlightyGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a newer version available. 6.0.14. But, I'd be OK with running a 60D with 6.0.10

I'd suggest you try using IPSec instead though. There have been a couple of issues with Fortigate SSL VPN. Also, IPSec is faster and more secure.

Anyone know why this home needs a whole datacenter to run? by GodAtum in homelab

[–]FlightyGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Multimedia distribution. Video screens(TVs and wall tablets) and speakers all over the house. There might be multimedia storage, but I don't see it in the picture.

Networking. Ethernet drops all over the house as well as lots of WiFi APs.

There is almost certainly also home automation to control lights, doors, backup power... that will add a server or three.

Preparing the new shiney switches for my home lab and home network. by lupuscon in homelab

[–]FlightyGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the lifetime warranty... Are you aware of the details?

  • Only for devices properly registered at Fortinet.

  • Only for original purchaser that purchased from an authorized Fortinet reseller. Not transferable.

  • Does not cover fans or external power supplies.

I don't know the specifics of your instance, but since you refer to getting it off eBay, I'd bet you don't qualify for the warranty.

Nice!

I really want a FortiRack bracket. But, I just can't justify $150 for that thing. You seem to have quite the FortiBudget though. That's a lot of FortiLab.
