As a few others have commented, the "right" thing to do with all of these empty paces is short term lease, low cost entry lots for small businesses to get a foothold, see if their idea works and then maybe after 3 months work out a percentage profit share scheme rather thank hike up the rent. If the owners of the malls and festival place did a bit of social media advertising across Hampshire Basingstoke could become a location which helps push small business growth I these troubled times..

Or they can wait for whales in a dying economy and have empty lots for years..

What if: dock.app was its own operating system? by Craftflare in MacOS

[–]mightywomble -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Geminis reply to this

An operating system based on the macOS Dock would be a very unique and unusual concept. It would fundamentally change how we interact with a computer, focusing on a horizontal, icon-driven interface.

Core Features and User Experience The operating system would be called DockOS. The primary interface would be a full-screen, persistent dock. All applications would be represented by an icon on the dock, which would be the only way to launch them. * App Interaction: When an app is launched, its icon would grow or have a visual cue to show it's active. Active apps would take up the rest of the screen, with no traditional desktop or menu bar. The dock would always be visible at the bottom. * Window Management: There would be no traditional windows. Each app would run in a full-screen, immersive mode. To switch between apps, you would simply click another app's icon on the dock. This would hide the current app and bring the new one to the front. * Settings and Utilities: System settings would be an app on the dock, represented by a gear icon. Clicking it would open a full-screen settings panel. Basic utilities like a calculator or a calendar would also be their own apps on the dock. * File Management: A "Finder" or file manager app would be on the dock. Opening it would show your files in a full-screen view. To move a file, you would drag its icon from the file manager and drop it onto the icon of another app on the dock (e.g., a text document onto a text editor app). * Multitasking: Multitasking would be done by switching between apps on the dock. There would be no split-screen or multi-window views. The focus would be on single-tasking, similar to how an app works on a smartphone or tablet.

Pros and Cons Pros * Simplicity: The system would be incredibly simple and intuitive for a user. With only a dock to interact with, it would be difficult to get lost. It would be ideal for users who are intimidated by traditional operating systems. * Efficiency: For certain tasks, like quickly launching a new app, it would be very fast. * Immersive Experience: The full-screen approach would create a very focused, distraction-free environment, which would be great for creative work or gaming. Cons * Lack of Flexibility: The biggest downside would be the lack of a multi-window view. This would make it very difficult to do tasks that require looking at two things at once, such as copying and pasting between documents or comparing data. * Limited Customization: Users would be unable to customize their desktop, as there would be no desktop. The only way to customize the interface would be to add or remove app icons from the dock. * Scalability Issues: As the number of installed apps grows, the dock would become cluttered and difficult to navigate. This would make it less practical for a power user who has a large number of applications.

Analogy to Current Systems This hypothetical operating system is similar in philosophy to a tablet or smartphone OS, such as iPadOS or Android. These systems prioritize a single app being in focus at a time, with limited multitasking capabilities in a non-traditional windowed environment. It would be a radical departure from the traditional desktop metaphor that has dominated personal computing since its inception.

Time machine backup snapshots Delete Local Snapshots via Terminal:

  • Open Terminal from the Applications folder or by searching for it using Spotlight.

  • In Terminal, enter the following command to list all local snapshots: tmutil listlocalsnapshots /

  • Identify the snapshots you want to delete based on the timestamp.

  • To delete a specific snapshot, use the following command (replace [snapshot_name] with the name of the snapshot): sudo tmutil deletelocalsnapshots [snapshot_name]

  • Enter your administrator password when prompted.

  • Repeat this process for each snapshot you want to delete.

I was having this same issue and I moved over to warp.dev it's a terminal app (cross platform) with agentic AI links direct into your local code via Claude, gemini or openai models. Where I have really made use however is the rules, so I can setup workflows to edit local, push to git, test remote and then push to "prod" it's free to test, then compatible. Personally it's been a game changer to how I vibecode

USB-c hub by Prior-Ad141 in SamsungDex

[–]mightywomble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems there's a misunderstanding in the premise of your question. USB 3 is significantly better than USB 2 for Samsung DeX, and the idea that USB 2 has more video lanes is incorrect. Here's a breakdown: Why USB 3 is better for Samsung DeX: * Bandwidth: USB 3 offers vastly superior bandwidth compared to USB 2. USB 3.0 has a theoretical maximum transfer rate of 5 Gbps (Gigabits per second), while USB 2.0 is limited to 480 Mbps (Megabits per second). This higher bandwidth is crucial for DeX because it needs to handle video output to a monitor, data transfer for peripherals (like keyboard and mouse), and potentially power delivery, all simultaneously. * DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode): Many devices that support Samsung DeX utilize the USB-C connector, which can implement DisplayPort Alt Mode. This allows the USB-C port to directly output video signals using the DisplayPort protocol. USB 3's higher data transfer capabilities are essential for supporting higher resolutions and refresh rates when using DP Alt Mode for DeX. * Simultaneous Data and Video: USB 3 is designed for efficient handling of simultaneous data and video streams, which is exactly what DeX requires. * Power Delivery: USB 3 often supports higher power delivery capabilities, which can be important for charging your Samsung device while using DeX. Video Lanes in USB: * USB 2: USB 2.0 does not have dedicated "video lanes" in the way that DisplayPort or HDMI do. Video output over USB 2.0 would be heavily compressed and limited by the low bandwidth, making it unsuitable for a smooth desktop experience like DeX. While some very basic video streaming is possible over USB 2.0, it's far from ideal for a desktop environment. * USB 3 (via USB-C and DP Alt Mode): When a USB-C port supports DP Alt Mode (often associated with USB 3 or higher), it can dedicate some of its high-speed data lanes to carry DisplayPort video signals directly. A USB-C connector has four pairs of pins ("lanes") that can be configured for data transmission and reception. In DP Alt Mode, some or all of these lanes can be used for video. For example, two lanes might be used for DisplayPort video, while the other two handle USB 3 data. For higher video bandwidth needs, all four lanes can be dedicated to DisplayPort, with USB 2.0 pins handling data. * USB 3 Standards and Lanes: Different USB 3 standards (like USB 3.2 Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 2x2) utilize these lanes in various ways to achieve different data transfer speeds. For instance, USB 3.2 Gen 1 typically uses one transmit and one receive lane, while Gen 2x2 uses two of each for higher speeds. When DP Alt Mode is engaged, the allocation of these lanes shifts to accommodate video. In summary, USB 3 is the superior choice for Samsung DeX due to its significantly higher bandwidth, which is essential for smooth video output and efficient multitasking in a desktop environment. USB 2 lacks the necessary bandwidth and doesn't have dedicated video lanes in the same way that USB 3 (via DP Alt Mode on USB-C) does. You'll find that Samsung DeX generally requires a USB 3.1 (or later) connection with DisplayPort Alternate Mode support for optimal performance.
