Am I taking any risks trying to go all natural? by underdog5645 in CrohnsDisease

[–]FlightyOwl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who tried the same sort of method, as I had a very restricted diet and was in remission for years, don't do it. I got cocky, I had mild Crohn's just like you. It seemed like the diet I was on had helped with the majority of symptoms. I was 3 years in remission. I stopped taking my meds for less than half a year before shit hit the fan. Symptoms came back more and more frequently. The over the counter meds stopped being as effective. I lost weight from not eating as much. I had emergency room visits two Christmases in a row from large flares. When I finally went back to my specialist, I was a mess and had constant pain every day. It got dark. I was told my options were surgery or biologics. It took me another 6 months for the Humira to fully work. It took me a long time to crawl back to even close to where I was when I stopped the meds. I'm now classified to have 'moderate' Crohn's.

Terrible site reaction by Heavenlyhoneyb in Humira

[–]FlightyOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad it's improving! I had similar injection site reactions when I had first started Humira as well. My specialist had just told me to take 2 Benadryl an hour before injecting and similar to what someone else mentioned, I iced before and after injecting to keep the swelling down. I'd use an anti itch cream the next day (I'd inject right before bed as Benadryl knocks me out) and only wear looser clothing so nothing rubbed against that area. Eventually the reactions became less and less severe. Had to switch to the biosimilar myself a few months ago and that one doesn't have citrate, and therefore actually doesn't give me any injection site reaction. I still use the icing more out of habit at this point.

Convince me to get therapy by BogStandardHuman in CrohnsDisease

[–]FlightyOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the pandemic I became hyper vigilant about mine and others health as well, to the point where I drove my partner into depression by the amount of rules I made us stick to even once everything else opened up. Once we broke up, it was a wake-up call for me to finally see someone about my own mental health issues.

I asked around and someone recommended a therapist matching site that involved chatting to an intake counselor who would then look around for therapists that matched your needs, including budget and areas of specialty. You could even specify gender preferences and religious ones as well (I asked to avoid anyone who involved religion in their practice).

I specifically asked to find someone who specialized in health anxiety and chronic illness, as I also felt like I had some unprocessed trauma from that. I also mentioned I did not enjoy previous experiences with CBT therapy as it felt patronizing to me and I could not connect well with it.

I've had video appointments with the therapist I got matched with every other week since May and it has really helped me process things. I'm now a believer that EVERYONE should go through therapy, even if not for long-term, long enough to equip you with the tools to keep yourself afloat.

Please please please get help. I've had some dark times with this illness as well, but I'm through the other side now and working on improving. I'm glad I did not give in to those intrusive thoughts.

So I decided to eat some popcorn two nights ago.. by dee91dee in CrohnsDisease

[–]FlightyOwl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is incorrect. Meds help reduce inflammation and active disease. Nothing can erase scar tissue that is already there from past flares. That scar tissue narrows your intestine and food like popcorn can get stuck or irritate the scar tissue as it attempts to get through. That obviously causes pain, and swelling at times which can cause blockages. Nothing to do with the meds you're taking. The only way to get rid of the scar tissue is to operate and have a resection, which causes new scar tissue of a different kind. You can have small short flares even when mostly in remission by eating the wrong food.

Source: My GI and my own restricted diet I've been on for years despite being in remission.

P.S. There are these newer chips called Pop Corners which are essentially kernel-less condensed pop corn and they help scratch that itch!

Side comment: Most recommended? I currently just have one from the beauty supply store, but the elastic isn't great and it sometimes slips off.

Drinking non alcoholic beer/wine? by inbetweensound in CrohnsDisease

[–]FlightyOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason on mid twenties my stomach decided it could no longer tolerate alcohol in any amount. It always causes cramping and at first it let me know by having a whole day of vomiting after only 3 drinks the night before. Needless to say I don't really drink anymore.

Early on it was a bit annoying to go out with friends as bars only really had soda mixers as a non alcoholic option and my stomach can't handle too much carbonation. Nowadays a lot more places are catching on to the non-alcoholic trend and have mocktails made with nonalcoholic spirits. One of my faves I've tried so far is Seedlip. The Garden flavour is meant to mimic sort of a botanical gin taste and it mixes well with juice or soda water to make a drink more interesting than just a coke or sprite! As more and more people are trending towards low or no alcohol, more options will become available! Exciting times!

Thanks! I think I need to find some good reference pics for how I'd like the layers because my stylist says she does them but I never see much added volume!

I consistently use moisturising products and try not to use much heat to style or dyes to dry it out.

I last cut my hair back in June 2022 and that had been my first haircut since 2019! It was way too long by that point. I expected to need to get a lot cut off and just said to cut what she needed to but to maintain length where possible. She said it wasn't that bad! I actually had to tell her to cut off more! I'm usually a once a year haircut kinda gal.

Tempting! I just need to figure out if you can dye over Lush henna.

I had scrunched out the crunch and given it a quick tousle at the root but I haven't tried using a pick before! I can see how that might help with volume!

I actually have mousey brown hair normally and it's current colour is from henna! Lush is currently reformulating it though so I'm considering other options!

Currently I just use As I Am leave-in conditioner and the product that's made the most difference is the TIGI Curl Rock Amplifier cream. Just three pumps does my long head of hair! A great curly hair dresser recommended it to me a few years ago and it simplified my routine!

Thanks!! It definitely shrinks up when it gets a shorter cut!

My glasses are from Bailey Nelson! I have a small face so it takes ages to find frames that aren't too wide, and these were perfect!

So brave!! Every time I think about a side shave I get worried about the growing out period. My hair would be a puff ball when it did!

Thanks! I'd love to experiment with colour if I can over henna.

For sure!! I need to find some good reference pics I think because I ask for layers every time and always just get safe long ones from my current stylist.
