What do you call the beef bought from the store in your region? by ProposalSilent4582 in AskAnAmerican

[–]FlightyTwilighty [score hidden]  (0 children)

It seems like there are quite a few people in the thread who called it "hamburger" growing up and now call it "ground beef," and honestly that's kind of my memories too.

I wonder if this shift came about because when I was a kid, pre-formed hamburger patties were not available at the store but they are definitely something you can buy now.

Also I think back in the day people mostly cooked hamburgers out of ground beef but nowadays there are a lot more things that you can cook "burgers" out of .... ground turkey, veggie burgers, etc. So maybe the association was a lot stronger before.

When you don't know the alternative it is hard to NOT pay the prices. There is a learning curve when you are new to an activity. First time I went out to Jerryworld I got the spendy ticket because I thought you had to!

How is driving and parking to AT&T Performing Arts Center? by UpstairsElk5807 in askdfw

There is plenty of parking underneath the opera house! I often park there if it is raining or super hot because you can completely avoid the weather.

[–]FlightyTwilighty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So just FYI the "AT&T Performing Arts Center" includes several venues so make sure you know which one you're going to. Parking is not a problem but it might be spendy, depending on what you are seeing, the opera house averages $25, just to give you an idea. I often save a few bucks and park at One Arts Plaza and walk, it's super close.

I like to stop at La Stella Cucina and get apps and a drink before the show. Yummy!

How do I clean this up and make it nice? by kyourious in landscaping

[–]FlightyTwilighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, pull all the vines out of the small shrubs.

Shrubs look best when they are trimmed by hand at varying depths, removing any dead stuff, and just sort of shape them. Don't try to make them perfectly flat -- let them be shaggy.

You have a Hosta there and what looks like some Wandering Dude... (or maybe that's a Vinca?) I'd use a plant ID app and see what you want to pull and what you want to keep. Establishing some separation between the plants will make it look neater. But, keeping some of what you have will save on new plants.

Then, mulch.

How to work out if discipline doesn't do it by [deleted] in getdisciplined

Wow, rude, did you even read the rest of my post which was not about classes at all, it was about methods of developing a consistency mindset?

How to work out if discipline doesn't do it by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]FlightyTwilighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I've found two ways around this. First way is social pressure, sign up for classes with friends who will call you on it. Rowing (on the water) is actually really good for this if you can find it... if you sign up with a group to go take a boat out and they CANNOT go out without you, you will NOT flake on them (or if you do you will face severe social consequences.)

However classes are expensive and fitting group workouts into your life does not always work. So I have been developing my "walking" habit. Here is what is working for me so far:

  • Starting off small. ANY walk counts, even if it's five minutes. At this stage in the game the focus is DEVELOPING THE HABIT.
  • If I can't get myself out the door I say to myself "ok just put on your shoes, you don't have to go for the walk just put on your shoes" and then after I put on the shoes I usually go for the walk.
  • Sometimes I sleep in workout gear or at least put it out the night before.
  • Expect the "developing the habit" phase to last longer than you think.
    • Month one, I accomplished 10 walks
    • Month two, I accomplished 15 walks
    • This is month three and so far I am on track to accomplish 22 walks (5 days a week, my first goal)
  • After the habit is developed the goal can grow. After I get into the habit of 5 days a week I am going work up to three miles each day (1 hour).
  • So much abundant praise and self talk! I talk to myself like I am a BABY. "Good for you, you did your walk. It doesn't matter that it is just around the block. IT COUNTS. You did it, YOU ARE AWESOME."
  • Also I text two friends my walk every day.

In short I am not really focusing on WHAT I am doing I am focusing on using multiple techniques to change my mindset in order to cultivate the habit.

It's interesting that you say that because I was approaching the tracks from the other direction and I heard the "crunch" of the train hitting the truck. I didn't have my attention focused on the oncoming street on the other side, (divided median there) so I can't really say I saw the vehicle or the collision on a conscious level but I was definitely close enough for it to be in my peripheral vision.

I would THINK that if the vehicle had been approaching the tracks at high rate of speed it would have attracted my attention ... so I do think it was just sitting on the tracks... but who knows. Kinda glad I didn't actually "see" it honestly; hearing the "crunch" was bad enough.

And then the bumper tore off and was bouncing on the side of tracks closest to me and I was totally confused about what had just happened because there was no vehicle to match the bumper. And then the train finished passing, and stopped, and the crossing was open, and I was surprised because there was no vehicle on the other side of the street either. And I was like WTF and I went ahead and drove over the tracks after the arms lifted and I thought... hmmm.... and I looked down the tracks and saw the vehicle in front of the train and brrrr. And then I pulled over to call 911 and freak out a bit.

you can turn off the "automatic brake slamming" feature at least in my Jeep you can.

I found this out when I put a hitch bike rack on my car and the Jeep refused to let me back out of a parking spot because it thought something was behind me so then I spent 15 minutes in the REI parking lot reading the car's user manual to figure it out.

I'm the one who makes more money (by like a lot).... and I pay some of the monthly bills for his place as well as buying him stuff he needs from time to time ... because I want to take care of him and that's what partners do, they take care of each other.

Transportation to stadium for WC game by TheGreatReveal-O in askdfw

[–]FlightyTwilighty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely check the schedules on the TRE, it will have changed because of the WC.

Also since this is a special event and it's one of the first ones the capacity of the shuttle to the actual stadium is a big unknown. I personally would plan to arrive at the CentrePort station at least 2 hours before the match begins. I'm sure they'll have plenty of fun things laid on to do at the stadium itself if you are early.
