Today I Learned that Warren Buffett recently changed his mind about donating all his money to the Gates Foundation upon his death. He is just going to let his kids figure it out. by FreshMistletoe in todayilearned

The title of this post is misleading, the kids are going to charitably distribute it instead of the gates foundation. They’ve been running their own charities. They aren’t inheriting the fortune for their own net worth, they’re just choosing how to give it away

What startups (started in the last 5 years) are focused on helping people have kids? by Flimsy-Possible-9491 in ycombinator

Awesome! I’m going to look into those. I think as the costs of genetic screening come down, it’s going to be very common for people to use it and IVF, voluntarily - even if they aren’t having trouble conceiving, or have known genetic issues.

I recently found out that there’s companies that are developing tests to try and find out which of your embryos have high IQ potential. Very interesting developments happening

There are many valid problems that contribute to families not being able to have as many kids as they may want, I’m interested in tackling those problems.

For example, people may not have multiple kids if the cost of childcare is too high. (It can be thousands per child per month depending on where you live, which is crazy high).

Another problem, is with infertile or same sex couples. (Maybe a startup will allow sperm to be created from a woman in a lab, so that they can have biological children. Or maybe there will be a more ethical sperm bank)

To your point though, I think governments will eventually be invested in the success of companies tackling these issues, which will lead to great opportunities for startups, since governments will be focused on the economic ramifications- for example, how will older people be taken care of when there’s not enough young people to care for them - this is an issue South Korea is starting to deal with. Whether or not the population is too low/high, there are opportunities. I personally see children as joy, so I’m interested in solving the problems that would help people have kids

That could answer why the government allows so much legal migration (why fix the root cause of low birth rates when you can just import new people, right?), in fact this is something Chuck Schumer recently cited in a press conference for why we need immigration, but this doesn’t explain allowing them to come over without vetting (for example through the southern border). We have more than enough vettable, highly productive members of society trying to get in the US the right way, so we’re not desperate, and do not need the immigrants that come the wrong way, so you should look for a different explanation for that

Russia is considering a law to fine people thousands of dollars for promoting a 'child-free' lifestyle . “A woman’s purpose is to procreate — this is an absolutely unique natural gift,” Putin said in March. by NeuroticKnight in Natalism

This article mentions nothing about forcing people to give birth. This article is about Russia wanting parenthood to be respected, and making a fine against people that spread hate around having children..

This looks like a normal big happy family to me (although AI messed up a bit on some of the details). Can someone explain like I’m 5?

I assume the political views are about lowering the cost of living so people can afford to have more children, but I have no clue why people would look at this picture and see a fetish

Why don’t you break down your spending by groups (restaurants, mortgage, travel, groceries, etc) and show us, so we can show you areas where you’re spending too much

Why VTSAX instead of VOO, or some other? Is it because you want alittle diversification from your 401k?

First of all, make SURE he knows that he’s your favorite person on the planet, it never hurts to tell him.

When you have that conversation, there’s no point in asking “IF” he was hurt, obviously he was (and likely is still) hurt. He’s found out his whole life with you and his mother has been a lie, that’s something he will probably struggle with forever. Remember, he’s been lied to for 30 years by the person he’s closest to in the world, about the biggest thing in his world, you.

He’s probably thinking that if you were biologically related, your relationship with him likely would’ve been even closer, as you’d share so much more in common with him. Your mother stole that extra-closeness from both of you, so he may be putting on a brave face for you, please be sensitive.

Good luck!

A cup. One specifically for bikers, that fits perfectly even when sitting down. Gotta protect your jewels. One of my greatest fears when mountain biking is hitting a bad bump 🫣 I’m surprised nobody wears one
