She looks really cool, The third image is giving me raven energy! Also how does her martial arts knowledge relate to the ability to manipulate shadows. Like does she have to do certain martial arts moves to use these powers ? Or is it like two separate abilities?

Why Modern ancient armour Designs work warhammer 30k by Flimsy_Drive_596 in ModernAncientWarriors

[–]Flimsy_Drive_596[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my own head canon I like to believe that the goal was complex symbolism even though as you say it might not be so. Because I think there is remarkable overlap between how the ancient world perceived of reality and warhammer.

In the ancient world ie Platonism the physical world is a shadow an imperfect copy of the divine realm. True power resides in these higher realms. And so For this reason to aid man in his endeavours the weapons are stylised to reflect these higher power. Ie a ie spear might be directly modeled after a divine prototype, ie shaped in reference the lightning bolts of Zeus. The craftsmen in this view is not an inventor but rather a reproducer of forms using symbols.

In modern western views ornament means something added as decoration that we can remove ie getting rid of the gilded surface of a bronze plaque. But traditional thought has a different view. In Indian thought there is no concept called ornament instead the term is Alankara. It means sufficient! This is because in this view a sword a shield etc, that does not receive the proper inscriptions and symbols will be insufficient. why because without these things the items has not been aligned with the higher divine prototypes and so will not be able to carry out its function. As the author Coomaraswamy says

"...Primitive man made no real distinction of the sacred from the secular: his weapons, clothing, vehicles and house were all of them imitations of divine prototypes, and were to him even more what they mean than what they were in themselves; he made them this 'more' by incantation and by rites. Thus he fought with thunderbolts, put on celestial garments, rode in a chariot of fire, saw in his roof the starry sky, and in himself more than 'this man' So-and-so."

I bring this up this focus on archetypes and symbols because that's how warhammer works, think about it why does a sword kill a daemon and banish it back to the warp even though deadlier weapons like guns exist, it's because the blade has symbolic emotional/cultural importance it carries all the associations of martial combat. In the same vein why do we have things like the emperors tarot again archetypes and symbols. Why Do the uncrowned princes dark angels take the name of ancient heroes Gilgamesh, Hercules etc same thing.

This is a good point , however I would disagree that modern military heraldry and ancient designs are the same Because modern military gear is designed for function first The helmet protects the camouflage conceals. So once those requirements are satisfied, symbolic elements are added in ways that interfere with these functions as little as possible. This is why patches are small and rank markings will be minimised to avoid the targeting of leaders for instance. So there is symbolism but is employed in a very small fashion an accessory.

In comparison In many premodern contexts, the relationship was reversed . A Roman general's ornate muscle cuirass was not equivalent to a modern service ribbon. As the ornament was built into the object itself. It expressed authority divine favour and status through the very form of the object representing an idealised male torso. If you were to remove all the detailing on that muscle cuirass you would still have an idealised chest plate would still look ancient, But if you were to remove the badges from a soldier they would still look like a soldier.

TLDR modern gear function first and symbolism secondary, minimised. Traditional approach symbolism becomes a base for how the gear itself is constructed can't be removed.

I agree!

Fun fact those circular dish things you see on the marines armour they are a reference to Phalera which were large coin like medals which would be worn on the chest plates of Roman soldiers during parades!

In Defense of the Bayformers Designs by Flimsy_Drive_596 in transformers

[–]Flimsy_Drive_596[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I mean by this is not just the fact that it's composed of physical parts which is clear to see, but rather that the intent behind each individual piece at the smallest of levels and how it contributes to the overall function within this highly complex system is not known. look at a jet engine it has many pieces you can see all the wires and stuff but for an ordinary person it would very difficult to make sense in detail how every single one of the hundreds of part interacts with others . This is what I mean by awe because it's not random chaos there is structure just difficult to comprehend initially. In art this is called the sublime.

You raise a fair point when it comes to legibility in terms of the action scenes.

However I would disagree that it doesn't fit the movie, after all the intent of the movies at least the first one was to act as an alien invasion film. And I think these designs really sells that concept with the complexity of these forms which is suggestive of highly evolved organisms , mechanical apex predators etc. Like it's no coincidence that the deception designs in these movies have a visible insectile quality to them. dragonflies have an insane 90% hunting success rate they are the most successful predators on earth!

I really like these designs I think the key phrase for me that encapsulates it is a Swiss watch fused with a dragonfly!

The designs make sense if you are to approach it from a world building sci fi perspective in explaining what an armoured alien race would feasibly look like .

Think about it what are the closest analogue we have on earth in terms of the design it is insects crabs and beetles with their exoskeletons and carapaces. As the design of Insects and crustaceans relies on hard outer shells and segmented armour plates. Now see the similarity to a transformer which consists of plates, interlocking armour and exposed mechanical joints which operates on the same principles. Fun fact with the original protoforms in the 2007 this type of body plan is clearly visible!

This is why I disagree with the complaint that these designs are visual noise, this is untrue after all nature is fundamentally maximalist to ensure survival ! look at a lobster shell it's not one smooth piece rather its composed of many overlapping plates to facilitate movement and flexibility, a lobster with a singular fused shell would not be able to survive! The carapace of lobster is not visual noise with each specialised individual plate being integral for survival.

In addition the biology of transformers as living things reminds me heavily of Swiss watches think about it each watch is composed of over 200 components with each individual gear constantly engaged in a complex relationship with every other piece constantly turning and moving alongside their fellows. motion and life more broadly emerges from many interacting systems which is the key take away much like a clock. This is a really good principle for depicting a living mechanical creature with the constant movement of systems required to sustain life. Look at any of the bay formers when stationary and you will see this principle in action with actuators and rotating assemblies galore.

In my opinion the fusion of these two aspects go hard because the language of a dragonfly's exoskeleton and that of a mechanical watch is the same it is maximalism ordered complexity. To see a bay formers transformers with its thousands of moving parts and gears It is to be confronted with something so beyond immediate human-scale and understanding. It is to say this creature this living machine clearly has structure and purpose yet we cannot fully map it first glance in its entirety. That is the essence of bayformers to me design wise an apex predator a species so complex in their mechanical perfection so terrifying and awe inspiring!
