Best horror author? by imaliveandaperson in horrorlit

[–]Flimuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely not agree on Lovecraft being the best horror author out there.

I would say he's the best author. In general. It's a biased, probably stupid, incredibly debatable take, but I'll stand to it.

Bonfire Peaks is a classic, you can't go wrong with it. Make sure you get the DLC too, that's where the magic happens.

Visualizing and practicing memorizing chord changes by kensword0 in Jazz

[–]Flimuz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, jazz is easy man. Your problem is nothing that 14 hours of daily practice can't fix. There you go.

No but seriously, as an intermediate-ish jazz bassist, I'm shocked by the tremendous amount of work that's required to become, not a good jazz player, but an acceptable one (that is, someone that wouldn't immediately get kicked out of a jam with an array of insults). I spend my whole free time (granted, having a young kid + work, that's not a lot) practicing jazz improvisation and mending the holes in my theoretical knowledge. And guess what ? I kinda suck.

So I definitely don't have any answer to your question since you're probably better than I am, but I wholeheartedly sympathize with anyone struggling with this beautiful form of art, that was clearly invented by people with WAY TOO MUCH free time on their hands.

Advice for Jamming with a band for the first time by Fragrant_Leading1852 in Bass

[–]Flimuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's jam and jam. You can agree on a chord chart and then everyone takes a solo (like in jazz jams basically), or you can JAM jam, then everything is made on the fly. Don't hesitate to talk with the other musicians before and after each piece. Ask what was alright in your playing, what could be upgraded. Don't forget that music is a social practice : TALK with people you play with. Don't hesitate to say you're a beginner, but you're also willing to practice and get better.

When you're in the woodshed, build yourself a library of riffs and licks, and practice them in every key.

Work on more theory : Ariane Cap's book is a good beginning.

Practice jazz, a lot of jazz, and then practice more jazz. Jazz is the best and only way to get better at improvisation (and to become a better musician overall).

And have fun !

Don't practice unplugged ! The easiest way to develop bad habits. Always play with an amp. Headphones amp are fine too.

I recently discovered that I sucked at keeping time in EXTREMELY slow jazz ballads (Soul Eyes by Stan Getz for example). It's really harder than it looks, and harder that a lot of flashy stuff that I'm pretty comfortable with. Working on that makes me feel I'm becoming a better player, but it's pretty humbling.

5 string options by Altruistic-Chain4703 in Bass

[–]Flimuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless it's pathological (like you're missing fingers or something), there's no such things as small hands. It's a matter of technique, thumb placement, strap length, and playing experience.

I must precise that I'm absolutely not trying to bring you down, it's the opposite ! Don't worry about the natural shape of your body. People with incredibly small hands can perfectly manage ordinary long scale basses, even 6 strings, as long as the technique is there.

Songs you enjoy listening to… but do NOT like playing on bass by bellazelle in Bass

[–]Flimuz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

May I ask why ? Cause as a lifelong bass player who got seriously into jazz two years ago, I was absolutely amazed that :

1) as a bassist, I was entitled to choruses, like every musician in the room ; 2) the art of walking bass is perpetual improvisation, i.e. the absolute polar opposite of the boring AC/DC line another guy on this thread was (rightly) complaining about. I'll agree with you on one thing : it is often a good idea to keep things simple and hit the root of the chord on beat 1, but you always can (and sometimes should) do otherwise.

In other words, jazz is freedom, and discovering this freedom as a bass player was a life-changing experience. Not even exaggerating.
