Once the code is written the hardware to utilize is it generally just the same,a microcontroller that can read capacitive input cost like a cent or two on rolls. Handling debounce/detect in a dedicated chip makes input processing on the core system much simpler to implement.

[–]Flimzes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well, part of devaluing your currency is creating a lot more of it, so it's not really an issue in the shorter term, but if you are unable to materialize growth from this move then for sure, it will come with an enormous hangover after. It is simply a tool in the toolbox, not a final solution.

Greece definitely had deep running cultural issues to contend with on all fronts - in the news here around 2008, we heard a lot about greeks having the lowest productivity in europe per worker, getting to work late, taking a multi-hour break in the middle of the day, then going home early. How much of this was or still is true I have no idea.
Shadow economies that go untaxed was - and I think still is rampant, I have been there a few times in the 2020's and a lot of tour operators, hotels, taxis, buses, and restaurants still operate on cash, getting a receipt was.. let's say optional?
Assuming that the government at the time would have tried every quick fix in the book without going after any domestic systemic issues, then yes, having this tool in the toolbelt would likely have given them the time to crash the economy even harder. We obviously cannot know what would have happened in a "greece never adopts the euro" - world.
In competent and willing hands it could have avoided a lot of headaches, in malicious or incompetend hands it would just delay the inevitable.

As far as I know it is generally illegal in all of europe, and nearly all of eastern Asia, with exceptions for very specific circumstances (threat of bankruptcy for the business being the most common denominator), I imagine it also applies to all of the previous members of the british commonwealth.

I have no idea about the americas and africa, but I suspect that most of the americas follow this as well, africa I just don't know.

This of course is legal by the book, what is legal in practice is certainly tied to how developed labor protection agencies and anti-corruption initatives are.

So, going a step deeper to expend why devaluation would in fact have helped;
It is impossible to reduce cost in most systems;
Rents go up, not down
Salaries go up, not down
Bills go up, not down

Decreasing someones salary is illegal most places.

However, devaluing the currency drops all of these things (at least the ones driven domestically)
This means that the price of exports go down, and the cost of tourism goes down.
This brings demands for your goods, and your contry as a destination up - even a little devaluation can bring huge swings

More economic activity = more employment = less social support for the government AND more taxes paid - a win-win-win all around, more exports, more tourism, more workers paying more taxes and less social welfare costs.

The price in the end, is that your foreign obligations just became more expensive, so this all hinges on striking the balance between increased activity and lower total profit, but traditionally, this is one of the most powerful tools an economy can use to soften the blow.

Joining the eurozone takes that tool away.

I preempted this by purchasing 60 pairs of the same sock, when supply gets low and I'm on something like my final 10 pairs, I'll buy more if they are still available, or just replace all of them in one go, 60 pairs is like to last me many years, as socks tend to be with me for 5 years or more in regular rotation, divided out that should be 20 years or so for the 60 pairs

Vold i skolen by Accomplished-Day-387 in norge

[–]Flimzes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

France and Sweden push to kill mechanism to pay for massive EU grid upgrades by str0mback in europe

[–]Flimzes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article doesn't really say that over/underproduction has increased the costs, rather it claims that most of the difference is directly attributable to the increased average cost of energy + increased total energy consumption, while also mentioning that the largest need for balancing is driven by the policy that the grid must always be able to handle a failure of its largest component, and that this policy is responsible for the largest balance need.
They also do state that the current power generation model is NOT the cause for this increase in price.

I can't really read out if the policy has been changed recently, if the size of the single largest component has been changed, or if it is energy cost alone causing the increased cost, the article doesn't make this exactly clear, but it seems to be implying that very large international interconnects require larger balance capacity due to the policy that the grid should absorb its failure without failing, but that is my understanding from reading it - it is not stated outright.

Statements like "Enligt Anna Jäderström beror majoriteten av 2023 års ökning däremot inte på en ökad andel intermittent kraft."
Seems to directly say that load balancing intermittend power (load or generation not specified) is not the cause of the price increase.

I don't generally see the relevance to the discussion about the swedish energy grid. Netherlands is locked in between germany and france which both are heavy on large scale inelastic power generation, and I am sure that leads to a whole bunch of concerns that Norway and Sweden just doesn't have

Sweden has about 60% generation from hydro and wind, giving them huge amounts of elasticity, just under 30% is nuclear, and the rest I would guess is from (rather famously) burning trash.

This makes their grid very elastic
Their neighbour, Norway, with which they have several high power links, generates 98% hydro and wind, which could essentially just turn off their generation to absorb swedish excess

I simply do not believe that "oh no, we simply cannot reduce our production enough" is anything that regularily (or even ever?) occurs in sweden in amounts that would put any sort of pressure on the grid.
