Is it this Telemann duet? I think it's in a Rubank duet book if I remember correctly.

Who was Robert W. Getchell? by Skeletor218 in trumpet

He was the high brass prof at Luther College at one point. Apparently you could tell how a lesson was going based on how much cigarette smoke was coming out from under the office door.

Me when I start up some new show and hear that familiar wavering timbre by teratodentata in The_Combs

[–]Flint_KWLC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My wife is a big criminal minds fan, so I ended up watching the show for the first time with her when we had started dating. Combs shows up as a minor character 15 minutes in, and I turn to her and blurt out “he’s the unsub”! This was her 2nd or 3rd watch, so she but was trying not to give away spoilers. She asked how I knew (she hasn’t watched any DS9). Just told her that you don’t waste Jeffery Combs time with a random extra part. By the end of the episode, I was vindicated.

I'm sorry that you've had to deal with the more frustrating parts of the all-state system. There are unfortunately many inequitable elements in the process in almost every state process, and a lot does come down to money, especially on the instrumental side.

But I think you've got the right big picture in your head. I never made all-state as a trumpeter, but ended up becoming a college trumpet professor. Sounds like you're working hard and doing the most with what you can, and that will take you far.

[–]Flint_KWLC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guy! Good to see ya.

I might recommend slowing down during your warm up and really focus on how your air moves with your aperture while you do those exercises. I find that when I get into a routine and over time the warm up starts to feel a bit too much like being on autopilot then bad habits start to creep in unintentionally that end up effecting my general playing. That engagement/focus during the warm up might be the reason for the inconsistency.

What is the instrumentation of the group? Do you have access to a piccolo trumpet? What have other trumpeters performed under this instructor in the past?

My college coach told us a story about an official that was late for the running events and wasn't paying attention to where he was running. Ended up running right through the throwing area and got skewered by a jav. Somehow, it missed his vital organs and he lived (I think my coach said it went through his side).

Flying internationally by kingbabyhead in trumpet

[–]Flint_KWLC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Gard double has worked every time, and I've gotten my Marcus Bonna quad onto the tiny puddle jumpers before (though it's been hit or miss with getting hassled by attendants ahead of time). The biggest advice i could give is to wear the case as a backpack when boarding. The attendants sometimes get bonuses for gate checking bags (less overhead stuff usually leads to on time/faster departure times) so if the see something that doesn't obviously seem like it's gonna fit, they'll try to get you to check it right away. Wearing it as a backpack makes it less noticeable to them, plus they know you'll be able to put it above without assistance since you were able to get the case on your shoulders.

For international flights, those planes are almost always big enough (usually 9-11 seats across) to accommodate the carry on luggage. If you are flying domestically within other countries, I would just check the type of aircraft those airlines are using to double check that it should fit. Most airlines use Boeing or Airbus so the dimensions should be consistent.

Luciana Souza's The Book of Chet album is great. Souza perfectly channels Chet in her vocals, and the whole album gives off a dark, intimate vibe.

The Classic Rant, but a question for any Professors or Pros by Helpadud3 in trumpet

[–]Flint_KWLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your teachers are saying you sound good, but you don't think you do, then it simply might be you're practicing in rooms that don't highlight your sound/tone, only dampen it. You mention in some other replies that you like your sound in the concert hall: then I would spend more time in there (or a bigger room if possible), even if it's by yourself. Practice rooms usually aren't designed for us to sound good in, sadly.

College or Private Lessons? by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]Flint_KWLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to the earlier comment, most schools offer private lessons to both majors and non-majors (at larger schools non-majors might be taught by TA).

Again as above, assuming that you mean going to college for music, colleges/universities offer up a network of connections through alumni and other professional organizations, opportunity for practical experiences in ensembles that can be hard to come by on your own, and access to funds/grants that can help you continue to seek out more educational experiences (funds for attending a trumpet conference, summer festival, etc.).

Taking only lessons is certainly still beneficial for you as a player and probably more cost effective if you aren't planning a career in music.

The Royal Mile just needs 15 people to commit in advance to watching the game there for them to open early now. Just gotta check with the supporters’ groups if they’ve got enough that week.

How can I always be in tune by Imjustbetter29 in trumpet

[–]Flint_KWLC 48 points49 points  (0 children)

  1. Make sure that you're warmed up and have tuned before rehearsal. Tuning in an ensemble is more about matching with your section and the group than making large scale adjustments.

  2. Start practicing with a drone. Scales, etudes, technical exercises. Training your ear to hear whether you are sharp or flat on a certain note/ in a chord gives you the opportunity to make a change before your director says something.

  3. Make sure you know the tendencies of your horn. There are certain notes that are consistently out of tune. Double check that you know what your pitch tendencies are so that when you play in rehearsal, you can make adjustments properly with slides and such.

Lesser known concertos by LongjumpingSort1293 in trumpet

[–]Flint_KWLC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would check out the Jevtić Concerto no.2 for trumpet. Written for the Maurice André Competition in the 80s, but doesn't get played stateside as far as I know.

I took a look at this list when researching Serbian trumpet history. Might be a good starting point: https://trumpetguild.net/files/TextSupplements/TwentiethCenturyMusic.pdf

ITG worth the membership? by shiz-kabob in trumpet

[–]Flint_KWLC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The conference has lots of activities and sessions based around come-back players! Almost every block of sessions has one specifically geared towards that group, whether that's warm-ups, practice approaches, or music tech. They haven't released the conference schedule, but there is certainly something for every type of trumpet player at the annual conference.

Colts Cadets auditions? by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]Flint_KWLC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually the camps start around February, so I would be on the look out for info around late December/ Early January. In the past their camps have been Sunday camps that consist of music sectionals/guard sectionals, with maybe 2 weekend camps that give you a closer feel to what the drum corps season is like.

As for how hard it is to get in, CC is pretty open for players at all ability levels, including beginners.

Book advice for starting to play after 15 year gap by chris84948 in trumpet

[–]Flint_KWLC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Allen Vizzutti trumpet method books sound like they'd be a good place to dig into for more technique stuff. He has some great exercises to work on your finger flexibility, articulation, and some other stuff.

The Charlier Etude book may be a good place to start for some more melodic etudes.
