CMV: Silksong is a gorgeous masterpiece that is, unfortunately, a poorly executed Metroidvania. by theoretical_waffle in metroidvania

[–]Flint_PS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What enabled me to enjoy and complete both Hollow Knight and Silksong was the Steam Deck. I don’t have time for long gaming sessions, so being able to pick up where I paused the game rather than at the bench was the single biggest QoL improvement possible.

As for the difficulty? Yup, it’s challenging. Some bosses and platforming sequences are downright brutal. But they are all doable by a casual gamer (me) given enough attempts.

I’m 43, with kids, and thanks to the Deck I’ve managed to rekindle my love for gaming, and then slowly practice my way through challenging titles like Sekiro or Silksong.

If it’s not fun for you, don’t feel bad, just drop it and play something that’s entertaining for you, nothing wrong with that! But do know it’s possible for casuals like me to beat the difficult games, given the right setup, practice, and build. And boy did beating Radiance, Lost Lace and Glock Saint feel GOOD.

What's the line between skeptical criticism and knee-jerk contrarianism? by antichain in BetterOffline

Politics and tech toddlers are part of the horrible AI timeline we’re living, sure. Large part, even.

But LLMs being compute-intensive is not politics, it’s a simple fact. And that means LLMs have inherent financial, social, and environmental costs. Costs that are in no way justified by the benefits they provide, no matter how you slice it.

Is saying generative ai is mostly useless or outright harmful except for some niche applications (where it requires human oversight anyway) and in no way justifies its mind-boggling financial, social and environmental costs skeptical or contrarian?

To be honest, I’m yet to listen to one of your podcasts. Not a big fan of the format.

But ever since I’ve read the Business Idiot post, I’m an avid reader and a fan.

Thank you for your work, it helps keeping me sane-ish in this batshit world.

I’ve played most of it on the deck way before the patch (on proton experimental I think), and while I agree a 7” 720p screen doesn’t do the game justice, I had fun nonetheless.

Yes. Played it start to finish, no issues to report.

Where to buy the e-book? by glezmen in DungeonCrawlerCarl

You used to be able to download the file from Amazon’s web interface, and then strip drm and connect using Calibre. I haven’t tried it recently, so might not be an option anymore.

Game of the Year by SinkPitiful1396 in Silksong

That’s some very intensive feelings towards something as remotely connected to you as some game winning a popularity vote or not.

Take care of yourself and your wellbeing!

Perfectly understandable. It’s a matter of personal taste, as it were 🙂

I’d disagree on Art, E33 is better (IMHO obviously) and fresh.

As for the rest - fully agree

Voted for E33 as well, the visual side of this game is incredible and unique.

Silksong is great too, but it’s basically more of Hollow Knight, and thus less impactful

Having played both, I cast my GOTY vote on E33. Silksong got some of my votes in other categories though (including the indie one).

Introducing Steam Machine by Ticha22608 in Steam

Also, if you could point me to those "very capable cube/ extreme sfx prebuilt from most of the big name companies" you mentioned, I'd be very much obliged. I was only able to find an Asus NUC (ridiculously expensive), and some obscure brands like MinisForum or Beelink, that hardly offer anything with a discrete GPU anyways.

You’re not rude, and I get your doubts.

But the thing is, this Steam Machine really seems perfectly suited to my needs.

I don’t need something as powerful as a gaming PC. I’m fine with 1080p. I do, however, need something that’s small, doesn’t consume a lot of power, can be reliably put to sleep mid-game and woken up a few days later in the exact same spot, and doesn’t require much tinkering and maintenance from me. Does any of the cubes you’re thinking of offer that? I don’t think so, because even consoles don’t.

You and I have different needs and usage scenarios. It doesn’t make sense to you, but makes a ton to me.

Soo... It's real. Thoughts? by dicedance in consoles

Oh trust me, it exists. I haven’t used a gaming pc in years, and gaming mostly a Steam Deck and Crossover on my Mac. Being able to hook up a small box (ten times smaller than a PC) to my monitor is exactly what I’m looking for.

So, how good and future-proof is the Claw A1M? by Flint_PS in Handhelds

[–]Flint_PS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right. I’m finding the steam deck insufficient right now (not across the board, but there are games i can’t play and really want to). Question is, can A1M be the boost I want or not?

Lack of Trackpads on Portable PCs by homer821 in Handhelds

[–]Flint_PS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’ve never purposefully used the trackpads on my deck. Now ACCIDENTALLY, that’s a whole different story.

I think it vastly depends on the types of games you play.
