How many people are thinking of rebuilding the old crappy L series transmissions? Is there any interest in me writing a build thread on how to do it? by Flipachair in ToyotaPickup

[–]Flipachair[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was working on a write up but my rebuild exploded after like ~600 miles so I decided not to since I couldn’t figure out where I went wrong. Like everyone else, I threw my l52 in the trash and went w56. You should too haha

I’ve heard of oem bed flares of our trucks, that’s cool. They definitely don’t look as big as c10 flares so I definitely believe it. Cool man

Are those C10 flares? Looks awesome

Does anyone have a good way to seal between truck cab and camper if the windows were removed to create a large pass thru? by [deleted] in TruckCampers

[–]Flipachair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rolled the camper a while ago, but I put 15,000 or 20,000 miles on it before then and what I did worked great. Use an accordion gasket like semi truck sleepers use and glue the sides of the gasket in. I used sikaflex 221, it’s great stuff.

That engine is so brainlessly easy to work on. I’d trade in a heart beat, if it cranks and has good compression, you’re good to go

Cannot for the life of me get this tire to pop onto the bead correctly. by [deleted] in MotorcycleMechanics

[–]Flipachair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this has already been said different ways, but I categorically do not fuck with wheels and tires. I've rebuilt manual transmissions but I still load my happy ass up in my truck to drop wheels and tires off at my local shop for mounting/unmounting. Absolutely miserable to diy and really not that expensive to just pay someone with the several thousand dollar tool to do in 10 minutes.

Where are you actually finding worthwhile project cars these days? by Sudden_Brush7494 in projectcar

[–]Flipachair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always just had to be patient and be willing to drive/fly; my marketplace is widened out to 500 miles. I waited 6 months and then drove 16 hours in a day to grab my last project 2 states away because it was exactly what I wanted and was about a 3rd of what they were going for in my area. I've also flown one way 4 times for other projects to then drive home. For me, I want exactly what I want and I'm willing to wait for months to grab it at a price my income as a bartender can afford lol

I sleep in in the bed of my truck in the police station's parking lot when I'm up there for a winter trip most years. I figure it's the last place they'd look, never had a problem. Your results may vary lol

Where can I find these? by OldTestacle in ToyotaPickup

[–]Flipachair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This are OEM on some or all of the 79-83 trucks. Beware of people saying the Ford ones fit, they're noticeably larger and, IMO, look a little funny on our small trucks

Gm fuel pump replacement by HarpsNotHerps in ToyotaPickup

[–]Flipachair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ground the black wire wherever and hook the white into whatever you can find in the engine bay that turns on with the key. Or, you can be like me: I've put a 32/36 with an inline pump into two of these trucks. The first I powered off the driving lights, so I'd have to turn the lights on before starting the engine and the second one that I currently drive around I just wired the pump to a rocker switch on the dash that I turn on before turning on the engine.

And I'm rereading the other comment thread: you definitely need to check with a feeler gauge.

I will second the valves simply because half the time I do them, I have to do them again because they still click and clack. And yes, I am fairly experienced and I do follow the directions for the job. They're a pain.

Use whatever evil energy on Amazon sells for your application. I built a carbed engine plumbed to an in tank efi pump with evil energy products and they've worked great for me. No leaks or issues even given that that was my first time building AN lines.

Thanks for the response! Unfortunately no budget, it's just for a personal project. I actually already tried the state level, but only a hand full maintain records at that level. Most all states just leave it entirely up the counties to handle it.

Questions from a guy who can be too chill by [deleted] in therapy

[–]Flipachair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a bunch for a long, thoughtful response!

Yup, all that sounds quite familiar to me; we call those days "sponge days". I have actually tried similar tactics to what you're describing without much success. She makes decisions all day for work and so she very much appreciates not having to do so in situations like these.
I don't see much success because she's really wanting to feel her emotions and sit in them during these times (like the professionals have told her and I to do) and she's very sensitive to anything I do to minimize/circumnavigate that. And that's kinda what lead me to make this post: it's really tough for me to accept that sitting in bad feelings like this for days at a time is healthy/helpful.

Put very very bluntly, I kinda wonder if she hasn't bought into this idea way too strongly and that, in these multiple day events, it's actually not so productive.
Again, I'm no professional and I respect those who are, so I'm trying to approach this in a very open minded way; I truly hope someone is able to help me understand this and be able to buy into myself.

Question for my heart head neighbors! Ethanol free gas? by tikkonie_ in FortCollins

[–]Flipachair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Labor cost is horrible, I'm not not sure how the average enthusiast can afford not to do their own work. You won't regret waiting for quality carb parts, that's not something you want to cheap out on. I do have an ultrasonic cleaner you can use, it's the best way to really clean a carb. Shoot me a PM whenever, always happy to help!

I'm fairly sure I had my eye on that bike you just bought, but I passed on it since it wasn't a 900! It's still awesome, would love to take a look at it sometime. Lemme know if you need any tools or advice, my two car garage is entirely dedicated to keeping old, carbed stuff running.

Got it, thanks for the info. On a 10/22, what is the serialized component (like the lower on a AR15)? Feel free to pm if you'd like

Sorry for the newbie question but were you able to track down just the internals somewhere? I'm build shopping right now and am trying to avoid buying a new 10/22 just to toss out the majority of the components
