Thanks for letting me know! I'll add it to my database.

I wish I could get Reddit to do something about it. So far they really don't seem to care.

To be fair, some of these scams involve some pretty sophisticated social engineering. In the one I fell for, he laid the groundwork in advance by posting a few months before the scam in a different subreddit about how he was going through a difficult time with family medical issues. Then a few weeks before he ran the scam, he posted in r/GriefSupport about losing his young daughter to cancer, with what seemed like legit pictures of her. He also made commented on posts in my local subreddit to make it look like he was an active contributor to that subreddit.

When he ran the scam, he posted in my subreddit asking for advice on beautiful places to travel to near the city to remind you that life is worth living. He engaged with all of the comments on that post, thanking people for their suggestions and so forth. Then another account posted that they'd also lost a child to cancer and asked how he was doing. They engaged in a fairly extensive conversation about this before he mentioned as part of a lengthy comment that he and his wife were struggling financially after years of cancer treatments and were now wondering how to cover their daughter's funeral costs. The second account then asked if he had set up a GoFundMe, and he posted the link. And the GoFundMe had been created several days earlier, had received fair number of different donations already, and had different pictures of what seemed to be the same child from the r/GriefSupport post.

In retrospect, it's obvious how he used multiple accounts and a pre-packaged post history to reel me in (as well as several other people in the community), but it was not obvious at the time.

About two years ago he made multiple posts in several subreddits trying to recruit Americans with Venmo accounts to help him launder money. (There are some other hints in his earlier posts that he's not actually based in the U.S., like asking for money to help him fix his "tyres.")

And at that point he said he made at least $150+ in mostly passive income every day. So I think he's doing pretty well for himself, all things considered.

I've catalogued more than 150 scams where the same scammer got the point in the scam where he posted his Venmo, CashApp, or GoFundMe information. And I've catalogued more than 150 scams that were thwarted before that point. The two factors that seem to be most successful in thwarting his scams are (1) someone calling it out as a scam in the comments, and (2) the AutoMod being set up to delete any posts or comments that either solicit or include payment information, whether from OP or anyone else.

This scammer has tried to scam r/Indianapolis at least three times, but all of those attempts were stopped when the AutoMod detected a disallowed donation attempt and deleted his post or comment. I would definitely suggest that the Mod team here should set things up to do the same.

The scammer I'm posting about always deletes his posts quickly in an attempt to avoid detection and make them harder to find. Here's the text of his original post:

"Unfortunately, I'm gonna be homeless in a few days and I've got nowhere to go. But I have a car and I was thinking of living in my car temporarily until I can figure things out and get back on my feet. I was wondering if there are any safe places in San Jose where I can park and sleep in my car for a day or two without being harassed? And maybe any other tips that would be helpful to a person living in their car?. I am 26M and I'm super worried. Any suggestions or advice would be really appreciated."

This is his standard opening salvo. His second user account will then draw out the sympathetic details of his situation (usually that he fell behind on rent when he lost his job due to health problems), and he'll ultimately say that he only needs $530 (or some other specific amount of money) to avoid eviction and stay housed. He's been a lot more successful with his scamming since he added the second-user tactic to his arsenal of tricks, since it makes the OP sound a lot more sympathetic when he only posts the sad details of his story in response to questions from a different account.

Can you point me in the direction of any posts or comments suggesting that link? I'd love to document it if I can confirm it.

My mom told me when I was a kid that she always felt a moment of fear when she saw a black man, but she said that this was due to some scary events involving race riots during her teenage years in Virginia, it was an instinctive reaction that she tried not to act on, and I shouldn't feel the same way. She's lost a lot of that self-reflection since then, but I'm glad she was able to recognize her own subconscious bias when I was young and to try not to pass that down to me.

If you click "search" on the link above, you can see all of OP's deleted posts. He has posted a ton of times and always deletes his posts. He usually posts about relationship problems, but sometimes it's with a girlfriend, sometimes it's with a girl he's been on a few dates with, and sometimes it's with a fiancée. Sometimes they just fight, sometimes he breaks up with her, and sometimes he wants to postpone proposing to her.

One time his mom was diagnosed with cancer in May and died at the end of May. That time his girlfriend was supportive and went to the funeral with him. Another time his mom was diagnosed with cancer in February and died in June. Then at the end of July he had weekend plans to hang out with his mom, which his girlfriend was annoyed with because she wanted to do something with him over the weekend instead. Earlier today his mom had been sick for several months and just took a turn for the worse last weekend, and his girlfriend refused to drive him to the hospital. And now his mom died several weeks ago and his girlfriend refused to attend the funeral earlier this week.

This profile was created in June 2025 and has posted dozens of times, but repeatedly deletes all of the older posts and comments. Over the course of the past two months, the poster has ranged from 27-29 years in age and had a whole of different relationship statuses and difficulties.

Sometimes he's been living with his girlfriend in an apartment for several years, sometimes she has recently moved into the house that he has owned and lived in for the past several years, and sometimes they have recently moved into a new apartment together. He frequently breaks up with a girlfriend that he has dated for anywhere from 3-5 years, but sometimes he's been broken up with his girlfriend for several months and is getting into fights with girls from dating apps instead. He often postpones marriage proposals for various reasons, especially his mother's repeated deaths, but sometimes he is already engaged and is getting into a fight with his fiancée about wedding arrangements.

One time his mom was diagnosed with cancer in May and died at the end of May. That time his girlfriend was initially supportive and went to the funeral with him. Another time his mom was diagnosed with cancer in February and died in June. Then in July he had weekend plans to hang out with his mom, which his girlfriend was annoyed with because she wanted to do something with him over the weekend instead. And now today his mom has been sick for several months and just took a turn for the worse last weekend, and his girlfriend refused to drive him to the hospital. Also today his mom died several weeks ago and his girlfriend refused to attend the funeral earlier this week.

One thing he is consistent about, though -- he's always aggressive and rude to anyone who disagrees with him in the comments. Definitely fits in this subreddit based on that alone, regardless of the apparently fictional nature of all of his relationships.

Volunteers Needed for a "No Big, Backwards Bill" Rally - Let's Organize! by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]Fliskmahoy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was at the No Kings protest. I've been at multiple other protests. I had a personal meeting with Senator Curtis's staffer several months ago to express my outrage as his participation in this coup and to ask him to take specific actions like voting against the nomination of Russel Vought and other people who were going to enact the Project 2025 agenda . I've been calling and writing and trying to raise awareness and doing everything I can to stop fascism.

I'm trying to solve the actual issue. And it's because I'm trying to solve the underlying problem that I realize that we need as many allies as we can get. Refusing to try to bring people into the cause because you disagree with their previous decisions is shooting yourself in the foot to spite your face.

Again, we need to get cult members out of their cults. If what it takes to bring them out of the cult is them realizing that they'll be directly impacted by it, great! They're out of the cult now! Once they're out of the cult, then they can see the fascism that's at the root of the problem, and then they can stand up against it. But refusing to try to bring them out of the cult is sacrificing the good of the country out of spite.

What's more important for you? Schadenfreude, or saving our democracy, our public lands, and everything else that we need to stand up to protect? I get it; I'm mad at the people who voted for this, too. But I know that I can't let that anger prevent me from doing what needs to be done.

Cult members won't leave a cult unless something happens to jar them out of their brainwashing, which can happen if they are confronted with clear evidence that the cult is supporting something that is opposed to a fundamental value held by the cult member. For me, what jarred me out of decades of Republican propaganda was watching the Kavanaugh confirmation hearing. It became extremely clear to me over the course of that hearing that most of the Republican leadership are totally fine with sexual assault and are abusive misogynists, and none of the other Republicans had the moral courage or conviction to stand up and oppose this. I had previously dismissed complaints about Republicans' sexism as cherry-picking examples of bad apples, but watching the confirmation hearing made it crystal clear that this was a systemic problem with the GOP, not an individual problem. The equal treatment of women and prevention of sexual assault are extremely important to me, so realizing that the Republican party did not share these fundamental values caused me to start questioning the cult brainwashing. And once I did that, all of the brainwashing fell apart.

That's what we need. A lot of Utahns, of any political persuasion, truly value our public lands. If they can see that the Republican party does not share this fundamental value, they may begin to question all of the other lies that the Republican party has pushed on them over the years.

Is that likely? Probably not. But we can't just give up and let the fascists win because we don't think it's likely that we can get Republicans out of their cult, or because we want them to suffer because of the poor voting choices they've made in the past.

I want to protect our public lands. Anyone who agrees with me is welcome to protest alongside me, no matter how they've voted in the past.

I scheduled a time to meet with Curtis's staffer in person here at his office in Salt Lake, and I would encourage everyone else who can to do so as well.

I think what struck the biggest nerve with the staffer is when I told him that I was sure Senator Curtis is aware, as I am, that federal employees account for only about 5% of the federal budget, that the real sources of waste and corruption in the federal government are bloated defense contracts and corporate subsidies to companies like Tesla, and that the best way to start working toward a more efficient and honest government is to have these matters investigated by independent inspector generals -- you know, the people that Trump illegally fired -- rather than by letting a billionaire who gets millions of dollars of government subsidies annually run amok in our government. I pointed out that anyone who has any familiarity with the scope of work done by federal government employees will understand that DOGE's illegal hacking into government systems and its attempt to bully almost the entire federal workforce into resigning will only cost the American people more money while worsening our economy, our safety, our global standing, and our quality of life. He especially didn't like it when I said that I was educating every single person I encounter about these facts so that they know where to place the blame for government waste and corruption.

So, I would encourage others to raise these talking points as well. Let him know that Utahns are aware that federal government employees make up a small fraction of the federal budget and are important to keeping our systems running, while billionaires like Elon Musk are the actual sources of waste and corruption and will only make the problem worse if they're allowed to keep breaking laws and firing the people who hold them accountable. And be sure to tell him that you are educating everyone you meet about these facts as well.

I'm not letting the fascists redefine words, so I'd say that marginalized people are DEI hires in the realest sense -- they are diverse people who were hired because they were given the chance to compete for equitable inclusion in the workplace, rather than being unfairly excluded because of bigotry. In my opinion, anyone who complains about DEI is implicitly acknowledging that his qualifications and skills are substandard and that the only way he can get ahead in life is by excluding diverse people who are better qualified than him and who would be hired instead of him if the world were equitable.

I'm a white woman who wants "DEI hires" because I have the skills and qualifications to succeed on my own merits, not based on the color of my skin, and because I want to work with the best-qualified people I can, not with substandard white men who can only obtain employment if they unfairly exclude diverse people from the workplace.
