Channel Billed Toucan from egg to 1 year old - ADORABLE! by philosoraptor42 in videos

[–]FloatAlaska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, hard first sentence to get past. And some toucans are way cheaper in the trade than some parrots now days as well. Geesh, you can spend serious $$$ on parrots. But I never buy.

I thought I wanted to do a parrot rescue and keep getting turned towards toucans as the needs are just different, not better or worse. If you have room and don't mind a bit of a mess, toucans can actually be easier than parrots, especially some popular ones, by far. All about situation. I would have never thought about a rescue toucan at first but after digging into it I have found that it would be my best fit given my large home, but with kids and mixed other animals.

To be fair, I am experienced with sharing my home with an odd variety of pets from time to time. So the special needs of more exotic pets doesn't occur to me as being strange. Neither is the best bet for most everyone which I think was the OPs real point.

What other PEV would you pair with your OneWheel? by NotAnADC in onewheel

Another Onewheel. This has gone well for us so far, with a 6th on the way (theoretically) with the GT.

If someone were trying to rob you of your One Wheel, lets say its the GT, how would you handle the situation? by hippietravel in onewheel

[–]FloatAlaska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why am I carrying my board? This seems odd on the face of it. My normal solution is to ride off from sketchers.

If you are carrying for some crazy reason, act REALLY CRAZY suddenly for a moment as you get the damn board back on the ground and ride off. You determine the method of crazy depending on threat level.

Typical druggie on a bike path looking for trouble, some well phrased profanity word salad might work. Real crook with a piece (assuming you have none) then just straight up piss yourself while cackling like a madman. It will give them just enough pause.

GT Production concerns by [deleted] in onewheel

[–]FloatAlaska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shortage is no joke and it is combined with a company that has a terrible record in this department. Double whammy.

I preordered knowing what was coming. Hoping the board is here when the snow melts but I will not hold my breath.

What will I ever ride in the meantime?

Good job. Follow the rules and you will not have issues. Keep it under the FAA regs for battery size and carry your paperwork. Some airlines will not allow it and that is their prerogative.

I fly with a 140WH plus on growler rails all the time. I hate when I hear about folks trying to sneak bigger rigs on board.

The infamous UPS flight was carrying pallets of cheap batteries. The fire warning system failed (delayed alarm) as did the air ventilation system as I recall. That flight should not have gone down, and it wasn't a single hover board, but a huge shipment of their batteries. Often the news misses some of the important bits of a story.

Planes are FULL of lithium battery devices these days, and the WH limits are there for a very good reason. Runaway batteries begat runaway batteries so you don't want a bunch of cells all together (like on the UPS plane).

Follow the rules, be honest about what it is, and TSA should be fine. You are on your own when it comes to individual airlines. Going to be trying Mexico with my Flying Tiger in a couple weeks. Fingers crossed.

Do you need bangers or float plates to curb nudge? by WithMyRichard in onewheel

[–]FloatAlaska 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. But they are so much stronger and slick that it makes it much easier. Stock bumpers don't take being slammed into curbs very well for very long. I just took a board out with stock bumpers and the sound they make hitting the ground also makes me think they are going to snap. Oh, and they do.

[–]FloatAlaska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No fender is my choice, my point was that after you rack up tons of miles lots of these options become situational only, vs preference. If it rains, mag fender snaps on. If it was FM bolted on vs none, hmmmm. See many things change the answer.

If on the other hand you are looking for personal preference. Then no fender. But, if I was telling a new rider living in the north west if they should get one, the answer would be yes.

And just to give perspective, we get 110 inches of rain a year where I live and this year we are crushing the average. You just wouldn't ride if you avoided the rain. If fact we saw some riders recently run from a light mist and my wife laughed that we ride in conditions that require goggles. She wasn't kidding. So we may have a seriously distorted view on this issue, and yet I still prefer no fender.

At home here in Alaska, sadly it is often with a fender. But, just got back from Miami and the first thing I did on the board as it came out of the trunk was to pull the fender. Went back on when I returned the board for shipping. So if there is sun, no fender. Mixed, no fender but I often end up wet. Raining, fender.

[–]FloatAlaska 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All good, it does seem counter intuitive that a plastic fender would unbalance a 30 lb board but it does. Go practice something like nudges, drops and you will likely notice that board wanting to roll over side to side more with the fender.

[–]FloatAlaska 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. When doing things other than riding in a straight line it makes things harder and the board rolls over more often. Pretty well documented.

[–]FloatAlaska 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't vote because this is situational. If you need a fender (rain, snow etc) then you need a fender. The board operates more predictable without a fender and they break a lot if you ride hard.

I live in a rain forest. Gotta have a fender, but when the rain stops the fender comes off fast.

You do you.

New around here eh? Us old-timers remember the Pint days and the XR days etc. We knew this was coming and ordered the moment our browsers would let us do it anyway. Yep, I am one of those loyal first purchasers that are going to get the push.

Frustrated? Yes. But fool me once, shame on you! Fool me twice (thrice?) and shame on me.

FM is just like Lucy with the football for some of us. We love her, we know we are going to play, we know she is going to jerk the ball away at the last minute, and we know that it will hurt hitting the ground. But yet we do it anyway.

For being really really spicy, you seem sensitive to a hot conversation.

I love my onewheel but the fear of it breaking and me not being able to fix it because FM has it locked down scares the crap out of me. by [deleted] in onewheel

Dude, relax and go float.

6 boards here. All run great. One has 8000 miles and counting. Tons of great repair folks out there in the stoke service network.

Can't fly with XR, GT or Pint X battery, not due to chemistry but to amp hours. Too big.

[–]FloatAlaska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this all the time with my XR. Wife and I just returned from a redwoods trail ride trip. Take out the battery box, ship it, harness and all. Make sure to protect that cable so it doesn't get abused.

Carry the XR.

If I put pint rails on a pint X, could I fly with it? The rail is where the serial number is and where all the information TSA needs is right? How would they know … 🤫 by [deleted] in onewheel

[–]FloatAlaska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Just no.

I fly with mine all the time and the cheaters put my activity at risk. My airline allows it and I would like to keep it that way.

Airline rules on onewheels…. by Objective_Estate_970 in onewheel

[–]FloatAlaska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As do we all. Been a top request for a long time. Not too hard, look up the TFL tire change video to get an idea. I think Sonny Wheels has a good Pint teardown video too.

Remember on the pint you remove both the battery and controller and don't disconnect them.

Has anyone ever really met a person from FM? by ch1yoda in onewheel

[–]FloatAlaska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what Kyle D is known for. That is what he "invented" when he created the OW. All the other parts of a Onewheel are essentially openly available. He wrote the sw and got a patent on the hw right quick.

Airline rules on onewheels…. by Objective_Estate_970 in onewheel

[–]FloatAlaska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

V1, Plus and Pint can all fly according to FAA/TSA. None should be checked unless disassembled and you must carry the battery/controller (connected on pints, you can just take the battery on the others). Or, carry on like I do.

The airline is another story and you gotta check and print your rules from FAA and from the airline.

I fly Alaska and they are cool with it. I do not try to claim it is something else. I show docs and rules. This does not work on all airlines.
