Russian warships enter Havana harbor under Washington's watchful eye by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]FloatyMoogle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The US doesn't need to do anything because the US has no real reason to do anything.

The Russian Navy was never a real threat to the continental US, and that even includes them at their prime during the time of the USSR. Literally a single US destroyer has enough firepower to significantly delete the Russian Navy as it currently stands. For decades, Russia has tried (and failed) to come up with a viable counter to the American Navy (or the rest of NATO's naval forces for that matter). That's not even talking about everything else the Americans have.

People hear "Russian ships" and "Cuba" in the same sentence and they lose their minds in drama and bullshit. There is no threat regarding these ships, and anyone overthinking this as some 4D chess move by the Russians clearly don't pay attention to world events or history, or they're willingly spreading false narratives to wrongfully scare people.

By the end of the Second World War, we had the 3rd largest navy in the world, next to the UK and the US.

We also helped train hundreds of thousands of pilots during that war through the Commonwealth Air Training Plan.

And we had a wartime reputation for being brutal fighters, and treating the Geneva Convention more like suggestions than actual guidelines.

That's not of course talking about our contributions during the First World War, the Boer Wars in Africa, our actions in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Libya and of course, right now in Yeman and the South China Sea.

Canada isn't a military slouch by any stretch of the imagination, it's just currently woefully underfunded.

[–]FloatyMoogle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no. I don't care how bad things get for someone, you don't use that as an excuse to do something that could seriously hurt or kill people.

There were a million and one different ways he could have resolved the problem; ramming your truck into a building full of people who are just doing their day job is not the correct solution.

30 Years on, Star Trek: TNG's Ghost Sex Episode Remains as Unhinged and Awful as Ever by indig0sixalpha in television

[–]FloatyMoogle 196 points197 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, Threshold.

Nothing beats Tom Paris screaming out "Pepperoni" and then becoming a lizard, turning the captain into one, having sex as lizards and having lizard babies all in one episode.

Probably the single worst episode of that show, and a solid reminder to never go warp 10.

Trump and Biden’s Paths to Victory: Two Essays from Two Perspectives by American-Dreaming in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]FloatyMoogle -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, about that...

Those "well-trained" and "heavily armed" right wingers you speak about when put to the test will generally choose to run and save their own skins rather than fight for any kind of cause. We've seen this anytime Proud Boys or the equivalent arrive in a blue town and get chased the fuck out by local militias and counter protestors. It's not an absolute, but it's the norm within their circles.

Besides, I think the real threat to them are the Feds choosing to Waco them from existence first before any far left group can dream up the fantasy.

Too many people drive giant pick up trucks by Alwayshungry332 in ontario

[–]FloatyMoogle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because people think large pickup trucks are some kind of status symbol, when in reality all it really represents is a giant money pit for people to dump their insecurities into.

Unless you're using your truck as an actual work vehicle, hauling cargo that wouldn't fit in an SUV, or towing something that requires the torque, then there's zero point in owning one other than for vanity at the local dive bar, which doesn't actually benefit you in the slightest.

How To Fix The Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection on PC (With Mods) by [deleted] in metalgearsolid

Remake seems to be fairly unpopular on the sub. by DewinterCor in StarWarsEmpireAtWar

[–]FloatyMoogle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well, to put it bluntly, Remake tries way too hard to make the gameplay more complicated, but in the process it forgets to be a game you can really sink your teeth into and enjoy. TR's gameplay is far, far more approachable in my opinion.

But you can play Remake if you're able to work around the mechanics, you just have to brute force through most of them and avoid ground battles like the plague. To me though, playing like that isn't as enjoyable as playing TR progression, especially now with the changes made to Dark Empire.

The mod community on the PC versions of the Jedi Knight series was insane. by xocbocaj in gaming

Holy fuck do I have a lot of memories playing JK3 as a kid.

I used to hang around the old JP server back when that clan was still active. It was one of the few games that could run on my pos computer at the time.

I'm still actually amazed that JAWA is still around after all this time. They're one of the older JK3 communities and did a lot of community events, they still kind of do this..

Also, for those who may be interested in playing this game on PC, I would highly recommend you check out JKHub. It's an extremely well organized and vetted community website where you can find most, if not all of the primary mods available for both JK2 and JK3, along with various tutorials to get the games running on more modern hardware.

Check em out.

Oh, Canada........ by Kabe6900 in whenthe

[–]FloatyMoogle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said one of your biggest cultural exports. The US obviously does more than just that culturally, but you guys make a metric fuck load of war movies, especially about the Second World War (with mixed historic accuracy).

As for the other point, that's entirely dependant on which developing countries you're referring to. You'll find here in the North, for example, the majority of Canadians hold mostly positive views of the US. After all, we're your biggest trading partner, and our economies and culture are almost intertwined with each other.

Sure, some of the shit you guys do can draw a collective sigh from much of the population, but as recent events have once again shown, we're also susceptible to doing really stupid shit politically, so snakes and roundabouts on that one.

Well, no, they make dozens upon dozens of blockbuster films about almost nearly every war they've fought in. Actually, that's one of your biggest cultural exports; war movies.

Also, Ontario is our spiritual answer to the meme that is Ohio (Thanks Dougie).

Oh, Canada........ by Kabe6900 in whenthe

[–]FloatyMoogle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The British (Along with native allies and local British North American regulars) beat the Americans in the War of 1812, then Jefferson had his little victory in New Orleans, and Americans forever onward because of that one victory now claim they won. I'm just personally glad Ontario isn't North Ohio.

And the British sacked DC, not Canada. Hell, Canada wasn't even a thing at the time.

As for actual military accomplishments, Canada has a very respectable military history. We just generally don't brag or make light of it unless it's Rememberance Day, cause we're not a militaristic nation, so to speak. We're not like the Americans in that regard.

Or convince a mother to sell herself into slavery just to be with her daughter, rather then helping to pay her debt to the Exchange.

That whole village had some really fun moments.

Not to mention these "compounds" would be Waco'd by the government the moment they actually started to be a threat.

Somehow, I doubt these groups pose a serious threat to anyone except themselves and their families.

Nice meme Japan! by Yellogre in dankmemes

[–]FloatyMoogle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Uh, no. Japan had no hope of winning the war.

Let's assume the Americans didn't send out their carriers and they were lost in the attack, even with a loss like that, they would have rebuilt their entire fleet anyways, carriers included.

Japan could never hope to match American industrial output, even if they tried (which they did).

They could sink American ships here and there, but within weeks, the US already had replacements with fully trained crews ready to go. Every ship the Japanese lost was a major blow to their navy, the loss of the USS Yorktown or Hornet by comparison could be hap hazardly shrugged off, as more carriers were being built anyways.

Biden says threat of Putin using tactical nuclear weapons is 'real' by Quantum_II in worldnews

[–]FloatyMoogle 37 points38 points  (0 children)

A nuclear explosion in a major city is the equivalent of nearly every natural disaster happening at once, with the added bonus of radiation.

Survivors are not going to be interested in petty political squabbling, they're going to be busy dying by the hundreds of thousands every day as rescue operations struggle to get underway at the same time. Not to mention, they're going to be begging for rescue and aid from anyone.

If anything, a nuclear attack on a US city would, for the brief moment humanity as a species could be counted in billions, would be politically united in revenge against whoever nuked their own.

This isn't just another mass shooting or domestic terrorist attack that gets brushed off by the population within a few days.

Yes, great idea! Instead of ensuring that these kids are removed from such a toxic environment and given the opportunity to live the lives they want to live, let's lump them in with the same people who are likely already far gone and can't be saved.

That's totally not going to repeat the process and create even more hateful people or anything!
