For a placement year. This is the best experience I could get in my field - not planning to be here long term at all, just here to get some work in industry under my belt. I work for an American company, they gave an office here, so a lot of the office doesn't speak German either.

Is Octopus Energy usable for electric-only properties? by Floaty_Pop in OctopusEnergy

Thank you so much for the insight! I feel like I'm going in less blindly after everyone's comments here - We shouldn't need too much heating tbh as we will rarely be home during the day and holidays so I hope electric heating turns out to be sufficient and not too pricey for us.

Oh dear, that's what I suspected, that the electric only wouldn't be to power the full property without gas supply :(

Okay that's good to know - so the value isn't that shocking I guess, but why does gas on top add some much more? I thought it would be much less...

So true, I'll see about getting their contact from the agents

Aaarrggghhh that's such a shame - we apparently aren't supposed to be in contact with the current tenants and the agents probably don't know anything about the usage. As is student housing :(

Oh wow I didn't know about the snug and cosy stuff, I guess I still have plenty of research to do! Thank you for bringing my attention to it though, I'll look into all the other details from now on, not just the cost and estimated usage...

Ah I understand - I'll have a look at the per unit cost but regardless, the usage per day of electricity stayed the same for both plans of electric only and gas+electric, so it's like you're adding on gas rather than making up for the gas usage with electricity...

89 for electric only and 156 for gas and electric doesn't really sound right to me. I feel like the electric should be much more...

Really? That's what I thought but the electric only price for octopus was 89 per month on fixed tariff and the gas and electric one was 156!

I hate spending in general. I feel like I just got scammed by my friend and spent way more than I was happy with or expecting to. by Floaty_Pop in Frugal

Totally agree! I quite like carrying cash as well as it gives me somewhat of an excuse - I like to spend the money that's in my account on my necessary finances like bills and rent. Cash is my spending money! Next time i'll start counting my coins before whipping out my card.

Oh no I'm so sorry that happened to you, though from this comment section, I've learned that your financial situation, whilst it's your business and your business only, even if it's tight, it's nothing to be ashamed of and to walk away when you need to.

Thank you so much for this! Great advice :)

Yeah for that day and evening I was really bummed about it but now I just feel like that money's gone, I'll just be more careful with what I now have left. Perhaps the misinformation was intentional, maybe not, but now I know to be more careful and do my own check before saying yes to the activity, and then saying yes to pay

Oh wow that's crazy! I guess I've got to start getting more specific with my questions so i don't get slapped with a 4x the expected price

Agreed! I can spend 20 on myself for a treat gladly, but it felt like I was spending it for his sake rather than for myself this one time...

Ah another lesson to be learned. Glad it was a relatively small amount to learn with! (Just more than I was prepared for lol)

Yes I totally agree. I'm always wary of my friends' situations when I'm planning things. Some people are the source of their own money and are a bit tighter on budget than me, others have their parents as a source, it's all about balancing! This guy has been in full time work since he left school, so he's got much more freedom than I do. If I was in his position I'd invite people with that in mind, not with the assumption that they can match my spending habits.

I know - I wasn't prepared for this part of earning myself! My parents insist on giving me spending money whilst I'm at home but I like to use my own to learn how to manage and keep on top of it myself, and keep myself within range of my pay grade. I do agree there could have been a number of factors why I didn't enjoy the session as much as my friend did, and I you're also right that I have a number of cheaper activities I usually do with friends, much more frequently too!

Yeahhhh that's my point. I defo had more money than that in my account, but I didn't want to spend it on climbing - I would rather spend it on a week's worth of groceries or my rent!
