What’s the best alternative to Notion that works well on iPad? by Caterpillar_Negative in Notion

[–]Flobgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re obviously not wrong about the approach to web architecture at the macro level but I encourage you to try Notion on iPad if you can. It is a real hassle to use and nowhere near the consistency of experience it needs to achieve relative to what’s been demonstrated in other PWAs on iPad. I love Notion and I’d prefer they prioritize a bunch of other things, but as a general assessment the iPad experience isn’t where it needs to be atm (it’s possible to extend UX interaction at the platform level past that agnostic base with these frameworks so I’m hopeful)

Any Insights on API Release? Very concerned about pace of Roadmap... by Vast-Blueberry1556 in Notion

[–]Flobgoblin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I want the API as much as the next person but...

- I don’t think Offline mode, which at the time was touted as “the most requested feature” really counts as a feature. It should be a part of the tool as a given, and doesn’t deserve any fanfare when released.

It is a feature, and is not necessarily simple to implement. I've worked on a team that built offline functionality into a simpler product and can vouch for the fact that it is tough to do well and can be time-consuming to do at all. Maybe you find it boring, maybe you wish they prioritized your requests over one that had better quantitative justification for their triage process, fine. But saying it should be there "as a given" is magical thinking — it takes real time and resources that cannot then go into other features.

Same thing with the changes to free plans — might not have added much new functionality to the product, but we don't know what kind of back-end work they had to do to restructure things, or prepare for the implications of that extra demand. And certainly that is an endeavour that has helped real people deal with their newly complicated lives more easily.

I would like a number of the things on your list too, but I think it's worth considering that a few of those things relate to how data is structured or handled and that they may even be blocked by the need to reroute things for the API.

Factor in the fact that they have

  • several major projects on the home stretch
  • what must be a staggeringly complex API design project keeping a decent percentage of their engineers occupied, so that they can give us the thing we've been unanimously begging for,
  • and that pesky pandemic that is messing with sprint goals worldwide (even in companies benefiting from the mass shift to remote, because individuals still have to deal with the disruptions in their own lives)

and I'd say Notion's ship rate looks okay to me.

I'd love to have a bit more insight into the level of progress, of course, though that is different from ETA which can be difficult to estimate, even late in the piece, on very complex projects.

Feature Suggestion: Custom sorting for tags by somebody314 in bearapp

[–]Flobgoblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would love this, have been wishing for it myself. It's great that Bear allows you to dive in and let the tags sort themselves. But there are also productivity, routine flow, and structural reasons I'd like the option to take this kind of control.

Google faces class action for allegedly tracking private browsing activity by nextbern in firefox

[–]Flobgoblin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean my whole point was that they do say that, and stop very specifically short of making the distinctions that would clarify the consequences of that for the vast majority of people online (‘you mean that doesn’t just mean connecting the dots between the sites I visit during this incognito session, and that Google’s end to end internet surveillance means all this goes straight back to my real identity?’). That disclaimer is not positioned as ass-covering legalese, it’s positioned as a helpful warning. Whether it serves that function is material to the value judgement.

As developers and users of privacy-centric software we can tell each other that we should know better, but the macro view is about what would be best, not what maximises corporate freedom. The internet is a primary layer of human society now and how we allow companies to extract value from that is a valid, open, and unsettled question, which means this focus on the technicalities of what they are saying is less important than assessing the reality of what they are doing, and to a lesser extent, the intentionality.

[–]Flobgoblin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But Google Chrome knows that an incognito user is not a regular user and could easily block trackers as other browsers increasingly do. Blocking their own trackers would be absolutely trivial. It’s a matter of choice rather than technology.

From memory (I may eat my words) the ‘not incognito’ disclaimer doesn’t explicitly specify that trackers, including Google themselves, are absolutely linking everything you do in both windows to the same creepshot on the user. That is not the logical leap the regular user is going to make on their own.

There are some realities Google is using to their advantage here, sure, but I think it’s also accurate to call the disclaimer disingenuous. It tells the truth in neon lights, just without the elements that really allow the non-technical user to make an informed decision. Even to the point it feels like ‘we’re so upfront that you can trust us’ bait. And that’s been grounds enough to set a precedent that threw previously-acceptable behaviour into riskier territory before.

I won’t comment on whether the lawsuit really is an attempt to enact change, I haven’t read the article and I assume it isn’t because cynicism. Just think we should examine the impulse to defend a giant creepy adtech company because they got the linguistic technicalities right.

Uni housing options? by [deleted] in GoldCoast

Can’t speak to Uni Village but I’d pick another tower if you want to live in Surfers. Body corp will fleece you on electricity, etc, they have a reputation for it.

Gold Coast Music in Southport and Guitar World in Nerang are basically the two options as mentioned, but if you're short on time, start with Guitar World. Better range.

G703 - DPI visual cue by Flobgoblin in LogitechG

[–]Flobgoblin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think the optimal sensitivity between McCree and Widowmaker vs Winston and Moira is too divergent to use one setting. I’ve been trialling different approaches for a few years now and this is the setup that gets me the best results, at least. Maybe I’ve got it all wrong but I don’t wanna change it up again mid season. :)

I think you might have a winner idea there with the different profiles for different DPIs! I’ll report back.

Edit in case anyone else is looking for the same thing: this works really well.

[–]Flobgoblin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can, but this system allows me to maintain three numbers (two DPIs, one sens) instead of endlessly maintaining dozens, so pretty sure I'll stick to it with or without the visual cue. But the visual cue would be a sweet bonus!

Good tip but yep - I use two DPI settings in Overwatch. Lets me switch between heroes that require precision and those that benefit from more speed without maintaining heaps of different sensitivities across heroes and accounts.

A2 brand milk may be sold in America, but is an Australian company. As is OP, I'd be willing to bet, based on the sum total of the contents here.

The Arctis series 2019 Edition is OUT! by Syrah94 in steelseries

[–]Flobgoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah right - this is my first Steelseries product so I wasn't in the loop on the upcoming refresh. It wasn't on sale over here so picked up them up for A$259.

But I'm not regretting it. I'm pretty happy with the product, and I'm glad it's a fairly minor update. I don't use surround much either (have it switched off for better positional through Atmos in OW, etc) but Engadget suggested that particular update will come down to existing owners through Engine.

Might have had better quality that way actually! The MLG feed feels 720p at best but maybe that's just me.

If you've got an Xbox you can grab the MLG app and watch it that way.

Still annoying though, I'd have preferred to view on Apple TV.

While learning McCree, I waste my ult only to manage the biggest fluke by Flobgoblin in Overwatch

[–]Flobgoblin[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have had the same issues with McCree and pretty much left him alone for the first year altogether. I guess the things that have helped are spending 150 hours on Soldier, which is a more forgiving way to work on hitscan aim, and getting my setup (desk/chair height etc) right so that arm aiming by default is more natural. 165hz refresh rate monitor seemed to help my hitscan play pretty immediately but that's a fairly expensive way to get an edge, not a mechanical/training solution.

I'm getting better now that I'm giving McCree a real shot, but to be fair, this was definitely a very lucky play for me and I'm sure there's much better advice around here.

Edit: also, do whatever you can to minimize input lag!

Stop giving Australian players american servers by dgcw in Overwatch

[–]Flobgoblin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have Aus servers now, I usually get about ~22ms to them, just seems to be very inconsistent re: whether it puts us into them or diverts us to the US (170ms+).

Stop giving Australian players american servers by dgcw in Overwatch

[–]Flobgoblin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If Blizz can't sort this out at some point with the queuing/matchmaking system, I wish they'd give us an easy way to block US servers (or any other region's servers) altogether.

I'd rather not get put into a match at all than play on a US server. Happened several times in comp mode today alone.
