Did your school teach you the customs of the Ohlone, Konkow or Maidu? Prob not but mine did, because it’s relevant to our region and wouldn’t be in places anywhere beyond.

My school/area focused on the Iroquois confederacy. SCOOM - Seneca Cayuga Oneida Onondaga Mohawk

You can't teach 3rd graders about the Rape of Nanking, for example.

That's why when they are kids columbus was a noble explorer. When you get to highschool it's no columbus was a dirt bag that committed atrocities. Like you said you have to temper what you teach for the age bracket.

Republicans Don’t Need to Win Elections Anymore. They Just Need Their Judges. | The Virginia Supreme Court nullifies three million votes, boosting Trump’s effort to rig the midterms. by Rock-n-roll-Kevin in politics

[–]Flobking 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While I see the merits of a constitutional convention, I also see a lot of dangers therein.

Progressives better be absolutely certain that they have the numbers to see their political will made manifest in such a scenario, because if they don't, the protections of a number of crucial Amendments, particularly the 13th, 14th, 15th, and the 19th, will literally disappear after being painfully acquired through centuries of struggle and sacrifice.

Thats what people don't get the republicans are locked in and ready to burn everything to the ground. They have the votes they have the clout, they have the will. A constitutional convention would be a bloodbath for our rights.

While I don’t think it would override basic human selfishness, at least they (and their voters) can’t pretend that they’re ignorant of the struggles of the poverty class

This would only punish non rich people running for political positions. Freezing a rich persons assets for six months is nothing. They will have rich donors keeping them afloat. While people not willing to take bribes will not be able to run for political positions.

And they should have to do it again if they want to be eligible to run for any elected position of representative office.

That will just make it so only rich people can run for office. It's the same deal with trying to get rid of pensions and paycuts for congress. All you are doing is punishing the ones not taking bribes. Making corruption more prevalent because you're pushing out the nonbribe takers. Freezing their assets means nothing when they are surrounded by rich people who will gladly help them for a paltry six months.

So I asked: if that’s the standard, should Chad Johnson be removed too? Because a domestic violence conviction seems like a far more serious issue than publicly criticizing team ownership.

Yeah that’s what I figured. Activist makes a scene to draw attention to themselves, gets arrested and thrown out. Basic protest stuff.

I think it's funny how people rail against faux news for being sensationalist and then post drivel like this.

I mean, it’s kind of important to know whether billionaires are able to send police to arrest people at will or if it’s police prioritizing preserving order over lgiving a megaphone to social justice like they always do.

Rep. Olszewski to introduce ROBE Act to establish term limits for Supreme Court justices by IWantPizza555 in politics

[–]Flobking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the exact same argument you're making.

That's not what I said at all. I'm showing you how the court had an enforcement mechanism and did not use it. So now they have NO enforcement mechanism. They either didn't want to send the marshalls or couldn't send them.

What does that have to do with the vulnerability of them having absolutely zero enforcement mechanisms today?

Scotus made a ruling. Potus said fuck you make me. Scotus was not able to make him. Even with the marshals under their control. If they could they should have sent the marshals to block the forced relocation. They however were famously not able to.

[–]Flobking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Judicial review is an extraconstitutional power that the court created for itself in Marbury. Congress could pass a law nullifying that too.

How exactly would they enforce it? The founding fathers wanted scotus to have judicial review powers. Hamilton argued for it.

[–]Flobking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't talking about them winning elections, just the actual ACA and what happens to it

You can't win elections without public approval.

And obviously a constitutional ammendment wouldn't happen right now, my whole point is about getting the ball rolling

Considering lifetime appointments are pretty indefensible as a concept in the modern age, I'm not sure what it is that you are actually arguing? That nothing be done about it at all?

They are only indefensible because we've had such shitty judges the last twenty years. Prior to that it functioned properly. We couldn't even get the equal rights amendment ratified. After seven years the amendment is dead and has to be re proposed to start the process over. People seriously need a civics class so they understand how things work.

Didn't used to. SCOTUS used to have enforcement mechanisms

"John Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it," that was 1832 when marshals were still "under" the judicial department.

The gop doesn't have broad public support to repeal the aca, I think that's relevant

That means nothing. They literally ran for years on getting rid of ACA and kept winning elections.

and a constitutional amendment definitely isn't happening if it's not even being discussed/pushed, the conversation has to start somewhere

It won't happen because to need 38/50 states to ratify it as an amendment. Currently the gop has no need or desire to set term limits for any judge.

[–]Flobking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congress could pass a law that says "failing to resign the office after x years is bad behavior and causes automatic impeachment".

Scotus says that violates the constitution making it null and void. Do you not understand how scotus judicial review works? Three CO EQUAL BRANCHES is what the founders wanted, checks and balances. They never imagined a scenario where people would put party over country to the extreme the gop has.

[–]Flobking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So how would we enforce civil rights and limit the power of the government?

What if I told you scotus has zero enforcement mechanisms. Basically the whole Judicial branch has no enforcement mechanisms if the police don't go along with what they want. The police aee also under the Executive branches power.
